Time synchronization with host ESX to Windows start even if disabled in VMware Tools?
Hello
just got in trouble with a freshly installed Windows XP SP3 VM do not apply Active Directory group policies. After some research, I discovered that this happened only with VMware Tools installed.
With VMware Tools installed, Windows events 1030 and 1097 were generated at each start (the events say that group policy processing has been abandoned and that there is a time difference between the server and the client) and group policies have been applied.
Without VMware tools, everything was fine.
After some additional debugging I discovered that the ESXi (4.1) server was not configured with a valid NTP server and the host time was 10 minutes behind. However, as time synchronization between the guest OS and the ESX host has been disabled in VMware tools, I couldn't imagine it was really the cause of the problem. But strangely it turned out that this was indeed the case! At every Windows startup time has been at the time of the host ESX - but only for a few seconds. This can be seen in the attached photo: initially, there are guest operating system time, and then you see the jump both ESX and then jump back to the guest operating system.
Why does this happen? Hard, I could solve the problem in the first place by configuring the NTP server on the host, I would like to know why VMware tools change the time of the guest OS, even if it is disabled!
Thank you
When he put the VM must draw from somewhere and since the AI network time form more that probably not started it must draw from the host, but once the networking appears he died in the NTP source - that's why it is recommended to configure your ESXi (and ESX) to synchronize the time with NTP source.

I have a virtual machine (Server 2008 R2) that runs on a host ESXi 5.0. The date and time is not on the host computer. Whenever I restart the virtual machine, the time / date on it synchronize with the host computer, even though I have not enabled (in vsphere or vmware tools, see screenshot).
I adjusted the time on the host, so the time is accurate when I restart the virtual machine now, but how do make sure that the virtual machine does not synchronize the time / date with the host when it is restarted?
Thanks, I can provide any other information you need.

How to add or subtract 2 times, calculation with the calculator of windows 7?
For example:
I want to add 2 different times as follows. More time is with the format hours: Minutes: seconds.
H MM SS
01:50:31
+ 2:20:30
-------------------
04:11:01
How to perform this calculation of time with Windows 7 or any other Calculator calculator in Windows 7.
Response.
In your example:
First add the hours, the minutes and the dry separately
Hours = 1 + 2 = 3
MN = 50 + 20 = 70
Seconds = 31 + 30 = 61
Now, to calculate whole minutes because of the second column:
61 seconds/60 = 1.016 mins (approx.)
Ignore the bits after the comma, and add whole minutes in the minutes column:
MN = 70 + 1 = 71
Calculate the seconds remaining:
61. 60 = 1 second.
Now, calculate hours because of the minutes column:
71minutes/60 = 1.183 hours (approx.)
Ignore the bits after the comma and add hours to the column of the hours:
Hours = 3 + 1 = 4
Calculate the remaining minutes:
71 60 = 11 min.
That is why total is:
4 hours, 11 minutes, 1 second.
The calculator is not a huge help to make these kinds of calculations because it works in decimal which means he cannot directly calculate/convert seconds/minutes/hours located in several of the early 1960s. If you had a spreadsheet like Excel you could set up (with a little work) to do this kind of thing.

Easy points! -VM time Synch with host
We installed VMware tools in the virtual machine. There is a feature in the tools, called "Synchronization between the virtual machine and the Yime ESX Server".
My question is, how many times does it take "synchronization"?
Thank you
Maybe this helps:
http://www.VMware.com/files/PDF/timekeeping-in-VirtualMachines.PDF
By default, the demon checks the guest only once per minute operating system clock. You can specify a different period
the .vmx config file option tools.syncTime.period affecting the desired period (specified in seconds).André

Our company has standardized on the use of VMware snapshoting than a level 1 to save uninstall mechanism possible to issues related to the updates / patches. It works very well for Windows updates on our Windows guests, as well as the updates I YOU on our Linux guests.
My question is if anyone thinks that there is a risk associated with the use of this process to guard against a possible problem that might occur after an upgrade VMware Tools.
The process would be: Patch ESX host, migrate a guest to host newly patched, instant, prompt, install VMware Tools update, restart, test and certify, delete the snapshot.
Since you're snapshoting a system that has an older version of VMware Tools, it's a bad idea to rely on this snapshot in a recovery scenario? Use the VMware Tools as part of the process of snapshoting a guest?
Thank you all for any advice you may have!
Matt Heldstab
Yes, you can snapshot before the upgrade tools and come back if something don't jive. To take it even further, you can snapshot before the hardware upgrade of the v7 and return to v4 if it does not work.
Seems like a lot of works well, but it does not offer a good backup method.

Check the configuration of time synchronization in ESX 4.1 for Windows domain
Hello
Sorry if this topic will cover many, but browsing the forums I found some conflicting info and thought that it easier to ask you if I had it correct.
I'm ready to virtualize our Active Directory environment and put all our virtual machines RODCs. We have an environment with 8 ESX hosts and vCenter 4.1. Most VMs are Windows member servers, but also several RHEL servers and a few non-domaine joined Windows servers. We have also two domain controllers that are already virtual machines. I'm down to the last physical domain controller which is our role PDC FSMO server so the Master Timekeeper.
That's how I was going to change our Setup for the services of time with all being virtual domain controllers.
1. the virtual FSMO PDC of our clocks of field it is time via w32tm to an external time such as us.pool.ntp.org source. That's the only DC with an external time source.2. all the domain joined machines Windows, whether virtual or physical (servers and clients OS) get their time via the domain controllers. PDC-> all the other DCs-> clients and member servers. On VMS, we do not use VMTools do a time synchronization. Throughout the normal Windows AD process.3. all ESX hosts serve time source external PDC, described above.4. all the non-domaine attached (Windows or Linux) machines that are virtual machines get their time synchronization via the VMTools Sync feature.Have I not my correct thought and not its ok to ensure synchronization of time between the field in a virtualized ad environment?Thanks in advance,HRThat sounds about right, and I've implemented almost identical to this designs. The key is, as you say, do not sync using the time host via VMware Tools, in particular on the role of the PDCe.
I also usually use this method to ensure that the PDC (role 5) is the only way to an external time source:
-
Date and time synchronization.
I have an ESXi 5 and it has a Windows Server 2003 virtual machine and joined to the domain
When I reboot the W2K3 virtual machine date and time is not correct.I tried to configure a GPO before logon, but does not work because the time may not be correct with the domain controller.
Looks like the virtual machine synchronization time with the ESXI host at startup and the ESXi host is not in harmony with your domain controller.
You can try one of the following:
1 make sure that your ESXi host using the same NTP settings in the form of your DC. In vSphere Client select the ESXi host > configuration tab > under 'Software', select time Setup > properties > Options - make sure that the service is started and set to 'start and stop with the host country ". Click NTP settings and specify the NTP source even as your domain name.
2. stop the virtual machine to synchronize its time with the ESXi host source. -Right-click to VM > settings > Options > VMware Tools > uncheck the "time and synchronize with the host. If you do this it should come back to get its time from the domain controller

Hello KenricLow,
Try this to see if you can connect.
Boot to safe mode.To access Safe Mode:
(a) restart your computer and start pressing F8 on your keyboard. On a computer that is configured to start to multiple operating systems, you can press the F8 key when the Boot Menu appears.
(b) select an option when the Windows Advanced Options menu appears, and press ENTER.
(c) when the boot menu appears again, and the words "Safe Mode" appear in blue at the bottom, select the installation that you want to start, and then press ENTER.Of in safe mode, type msconfig in the start in the start menu search box and press return. Then on the Startup tab, uncheck the box any reference to the verisign/authentec software. Then, go to the services tab, sort the columns by manufacturer, then uncheck all references to Verisign. Then click ok and restart in normal mode.
If please reply back and let us know if that helped to turn out to get rid of your error message.
Sincerely,
Marilyn

How to disable the time synchronization in a VMware customer?
Hello!
Could someone please tell me how could stop a VMware customer of time synchronization? I'm using VMware Workstation 9.
I added these settings to the .vmx file:
tools.syncTime = "FALSE"
time.synchronize.continue = "FALSE"
time.synchronize.restore = "FALSE"
time.synchronize.resume.disk = "FALSE"
time.synchronize.shrink = "FALSE"
time.synchronize.tools.startup = "FALSE"
time.synchronize.tools.enable = "FALSE"
time.synchronize.resume.host = "FALSE"Unfortunately, when I start the PC it will synchronize time. If the PC is running, and I got a break, after that it will not synchronize the time, until I restart it. My hypothesis is, that in the BIOS of the client synchronizes time somehow.
Could someone tell me how can I disable it and completely disable the time synchronization?
Thank you!
To start a virtual machine, it chooses the moment the host using unless you specify something with this option:
rtc.startTime = "1089395200".
See my notes at sanbarrow.com
in WS 10, we have a little more settings that you may need to define - haven't tested them yet:
Time.Synchronize
Time.Synchronize.allow
Time.Synchronize.allow.Backward
Time.Synchronize.continue
Time.Synchronize.continue.Backward
Time.Synchronize.pause

Impossible to disable the time synchronization in VMWare Workstation 8.0.1
I read 1189 KB # as well as various articles on disabling time synchronization between host and guest, but I can't seem to stop synchronization.
I closed the comments and edited the VMX file as follows:
tools.syncTime = "FALSE".
Time.Synchronize.continue = "FALSE".
Time.Synchronize.Restore = "FALSE".
Time.Synchronize.Resume.Disk = "FALSE".
Time.Synchronize.Shrink = "FALSE".
Tools.Synchronize.Tools.Startup = "FALSE".But no matter what, the time of comments still synchronizes to the host after turning the power on or return to.
I tried on the hosts Windows 2008 x 86 and Windows 2008 R2 with the same results. I also disabled the functionality of Windows to "synchronize with a time server Internet.
I'm using VMWare Workstation 8.0.1 on Windows 7 Pro x 64.
Clues as to what I'm missing?
Thank you.
Your initial message, I found that something is different with the content of KB.
Will keep you ' tools.synchronize.tools.startup = 'FALSE' but the KB said there should be time.synchronize.tools.startup = 'FALSE'.»
Please copy and paste below your *.vmx file model.
tools.syncTime = "FALSE".
Time.Synchronize.continue = "FALSE".
Time.Synchronize.Restore = "FALSE".
Time.Synchronize.Resume.Disk = "FALSE".
Time.Synchronize.Shrink = "FALSE".
Time.Synchronize.Tools.Startup = "FALSE".
Time.Synchronize.Tools.Enable = "FALSE".
Time.Synchronize.Resume.Host = "FALSE". -

Before running VMware Tools for the first time, you must
Configure it to your kernel running on the
following command: "/ usr/bin/vmware-config-tools.pl".
Config tools... He'll try to compile tools for your kernel, make sure you have the kernel and GCC installed headers. If the compilation fails, there should be a build any - any for the "vmware tools" somewhere on this site...

Time synchronization failure ESXi with the role of PDC windows 2008
Hello
I have configured my ESXi hosts to synchronize their time with my (physical) 2008 windows domain controller.
This domain controller holding the role of PDC for the domain.
Synchronize the time on the host computer is configured on the IP, but it does not work. The host is not synchronize time.
When a virtual machine is started, it syncs everything first time with the crowd and after a few minutes, he re - synchronizes with the domain controller.
How can I get the host to synchronize with my DC?
ThX,
Harry
Hi Harry,.
You may need to activate the NTP server on your first PDC (POWER off by default) emulator feature. You can take a look at the following blog to find how do.
Never use NTP in a virtual machine if it is part of a domain. Active Directory has its own mechanism for time management.
It will be useful.
Concerning
Franck
