Too many photos in the catalog?

Hello everyone,

I am using LR3 since Beta 1. (no previous experience in the LR).  I transferred approximately 11000 photos of PSE 3 of LR3.  Did a lot of treatment, Keywords etc. and reduced the total amount of about 8300.  I really enjoyed the process and enjoyed the new access, I've had my photos.  Next step was to plug my archives of about 50 000 photos stored on an external hard drive.  Initailly all goes well, but after about 10 sessions of the removal of duplicates and adding keywords, the program got stuck on a selection of 20 photos and tent to move far gave rise to a microsoft window indicating that there was a problem and LR3 have closed.  I couldn't get past that, so I called Adobe help.  The technology was not very helpful.  She said the number max of photos in a catalog of 10,000.  I had passed this and overloaded the system.  She helped me to create a new catalog containing my 8300 original and told me to generate new cats for the rest 50K, 10 k per cat.  The new cat with my 8300 had no the keywording, I spent many hours to create.

I was able to go through my back ups and restore a backup made before adding the 50 archived k which contained my 8300 more phots keyworded.  Now what I would like to clean up my list of catalogs.  Can I do this without destroying LR3 ability to access my 8300?

How to break my archives of 50 k to 10K pieces?  And what I really do, I thought I read that LR3 could manage pictures of 1 M.

I really don't like the program, but the lack of even a guide is tedious.  I have a lot of trouble to get the information I want on the net.  I'm the type of book reader.  Love the thumb through the pages and the index and make marks all over the pages I want to use for a project.  Anyone who is found written in a book tha't also intuitively that the program works.  I don't usually like for Kelby style.

I know it's a bit for any question, never mind a first signal, but any help is appreciated.  Thank you to all who have the time to respond, hawey

  • "The file... is associated with another photo in the catalog" problem

I have about 300 000 images stored on a disk in Drobo. Due to a hardware problem with the Drobo itself, I had get a new Drobo. I placed my old drives inside the new unit and everything appeared fine in the Finder. But in LR, everything happens with the "...". the original file is not found. "When I try to locate and correct the association I get, 'the file... is associated with another photo in the catalog. Each file can be associated with a picture. "There are not many copies. How can I solve this problem? Thank you.

Are the files in the same place exactly as they were before your accident of drobo? i.e. the volume is a not the structure exact same name and folder? If Yes, you shouldn't have to re-associate the files and you should be able to double-click on an image and Lightroom it true already knows where is the image. If it isn't, you may need to stop Lightroom, disassemble the drive and reassemble and then open Lightroom again. I saw Lightroom being very slow to recognize the disk he thought no was not available was in fact already mounted.

  • Too many problems with the latest version of Lightroom

    Hi all

I have too many problems with the latest version of Lightroom (CC 2015.2.1 1046594)

In fact, the latest version of 3 or 4 were bad: instead of doing better, I always had more problems.

So I would like to go back to a previous version of lightroom

Adobe customar care, in Italy, is unnecessary:

    they can just to:

-looking for answer on this forum

-saying "you solve your problems just with the de-insall and re-install it.

    stop, no more...

in this way they create me a lot fo iusses...

I use the English version of the PS and LR, but they made me reinstall the Italian version of CC because it has been blocked

the result was that CC does not recognize software, due to a different language version

so, I contacted again Adobe Customer Care... they said "no problem, uninstall LR, delete these files and install this...

I did and I let go 2 years to develop the parameters on the correction of the colors for my clients because they told me to remove a folder, I need!

so, I ask you now if there is a way to return to a previous version of lightroom, any previous version...

I never found better performance in more recent versions...

I've always found, performance slower, more problems...

personal idea: I do not understand why adobe are boicotting itself, but I think he do!

    Thanks to you all

  • I use Lightroom 4.4 on windows 8. Less than 500 photos on the catalog and the catalog size is currently at 2.16 GB. Lightroom works fine, but I'm taking a risk by leaving the catalog to grow beyond 2 GB?

I use Lightroom 4.4 on windows 8. If I have less than 500 photos on the catalog, I do a lot of alterations and cleaning of the images and therefore the size of the catalogue is currently at 2.16 GB. Lightroom works fine, but I'm taking a risk by leaving the catalog to grow beyond 2 GB? Should I close it and start a new catalog? Thanks for your suggestions.

Many local adjustments (brush strokes, spot healing) can have a huge impact on the overall size of the catalog because they are all saved as stages of the individual history and so I wouldn't worry - there is nothing wrong with your catalog. See my thread here since a few years back: which affects the size of the Lightroom catalog file? where Rob Cole usefully thought of it for me.

You could delete the history if you wanted and that I'd be willing to bet that the size would be reduced considerably. That said, my catalog file is larger than 10 GB (as I do a lot of local changes as stated in the thread I linked to) and it causes no problem at all, apart from resulting in a backup of slow catalogue (my previews resume another 30 GB or more). I have not yet felt the need for the history of the Reformation, but doing so probably would increase my catalog to about 1 GB, so it's an option if size becomes a problem for me.

My advice: continue anyway and don't worry in this regard.

Files that I was still using yesterday now are more connected to the catalog.  Try to locate the files I get the message "the file is associated with another photo in the catalog. How can I find and solve.

    Thank you

This is because this same image, same time date and time of the device, is already in the catalog using a different file name.

Conversely having not happening again is to STOP Renaming files on import or manually in the file manager or with another image, software.

Each camera has a system that can be customized if necessary if you have 2 cameras of the same brand and model of separate file naming. And even then, they are separated by the serial number of each camera.

I'm 7 days in LR to the trial. After creation and 'use' to develop to edit 6 catalogues, I find without changing this or that all catalogs when opening, now have a bright red nail in different areas of the photos in the catalog. Some of the catalogues have been created several days ago and were considered OK, but now this 'red' hue appeared in all the catalogues without any intervention by me.

I don't know why you create several different catalogs. Lightroom is managed much more efficiently using a single catalog. But regardless of this issue, it seems that if you have enabled clipping indicators. Pressing the J button makes the point high and indicators on shadow clipping or out of service. Or you can click on the small square in the upper corners of the histogram. Clicking the square to the left turns clipping shadow power. Clicking the square to the right will turn point highlight clipping power. I leave switched indicators so that I can identify areas that need to be adjusted so that I can eliminate all clipping.

  • File is associated with another photo in the catalog?

    Hi all

I got LR4 running on a laptop computer and an external hard drive to store my images. I bought an imac and upgraded to 5. I also bought a new large external hard drive and copied all my images on the new drive.

I created a new catalog and began importing images and everything was fine. Then I wanted to work on an old image and couldn't find it so plugged the old hard drive and there's DNG format.

Now, I'm back on the mac, and most of my catalog went gray. I and exclamation mark in the corner! the nail of the thumb. It says it cannot locate the file. If I found the file nothing happens, so I try once Mithraeum locating in exactly in the same place and this time it says the file is associated with another photo in the catalog?

My a few catalogs are a mess, I know. I don't really understand the whole import/DNG/catalog file, storage system. So I watched a tutorial on a combination of catalogs I want just one master, used on my mac, stored on my drive. So, I created a master and used catalog "import from another catalog. I've lived and all imported, so all of my images are in the new catalogue, but most of the images is still grey!

I used the thought of plugin of duplicates which could clean it upward, but no, still the same.

I worked on that a lot of my DNG files are on my old drive in a TEMP folder. I have to sort, move them to my new hardrive and bind them to the images? In addition, to solve the problem together "associated with another photo in the catalog.

Then I can remove the old catalogs (such as a backup has been configured on an another new disc!) and I'm all clean and go back to sleep!

Any help will be much appreciated and I hope to end my life of youtube tutorials!

    Thanks Mark.

  • Paradigm of photo storage? (too many Go to the new computer)

    Summary:

I'm at the point of having to upgrade and get a new iMac for me.  Most of them have not nearly enough storage space for my photos/videos stored in the pictures.  I'm looking for advice in planning to implement a new "main" computer for the home/host Photos that will work for me. I know I maybe need to update my paradigm of Setup to get the best solution (had to do to get photos for devices of the family and now that I thought about it, it works very well!).

    Details:

My current main computer is a big iMac 2009. With a 1 TB drive - who doesn't have 2 - 3 years. Replaced by a 2 TB drive (Seagate) which lasted a whole year and failed.  Replaced by a 3 TB drive (I think it's a Western?) which works very well... so far.  I have Time Machine backups on a dedicated (3 TB) external drive, so it took a lot of getting up and running when it happened, fortunately.  I did the physical replacement of the disks myself without incident.

My current photo library says it's 708GB in size. Library.photolibrary of iPhoto is 558 GB (I can do without it?).  In my storage of 'about this Mac' tab he said films take 609GB, and take some Photos 379 GB. "Free of 2.79 to 1.18 TB."

I've considered using iCloud, but I can't currently feel like I can afford $ 120 / year for storage...  Amazon has unlimited storage for $60 / year, but I'm not wanting something that do not integrate well (even if I am slightly consider it for a backup option).

These are all our personal digital photos/videos for the past 14 years and no, I'm really not to split the library and not have everything at my fingertips... In addition, I want that they all in an accessible digital format for now.

    My ideas:

I could buy a new iMac or slightly used and replace the hard drive with a bigger drive (not sure how friendly models current are for that!) and as I have.

I could get the new iMac and keep an external drive running with the storage of Photos on it. But then I have questions on it being backed up with Time Machine.

What else is there to implement I think not?  Are there other aspects that I think not?

My current photo library says it's 708GB in size. Library.photolibrary of iPhoto is 558 GB (I can do without it?)

If you don't use iPhoto, you can delete the iPhoto library but you don't get the whole GB 558.  The two libraries share the same data on the HDD through hard links initially so that they only take twice the amount of space on the hard disk.

New photos added to each library are independent of the other library.

Here is more information about hard links:

Photos saves disk space to share images with your iPhoto or Aperture - Apple Support libraries

The (hard) link between Photos and iPhoto

I've considered using iCloud, but I can't currently feel like I can afford $ 120 / year for storage...  Amazon has unlimited storage for $60 / year

The iCloud is not a storage system off Mac where you can put your library of PHotos and the operator there from there.  It's a synchronization system that allows you to synchronize your photos between all devices that are connected to the same Apple ID and the active library iCloud.  You may have the option for the version store only optimized on your Mac to save space.  However, the full versions will have to be downloaded any time, that the pictures are needed for printing, in a project or for a slide show.

All iCloud options are features of synchronization and require files to be obscured on Mac.

iCloud Photo library FAQ - Apple Support

iCloud Drive FAQ - Apple Support

Also there is no option of storage online library of Photos that can be stored on and used or recovered in a guaranteed condition.  Their servers are not correctly formatted and are incompatible with the libraries of Photos.

I could get the new iMac and keep an external drive running with the storage of Photos on it. But then I have questions on it being backed up with Time Machine.

This is the solution that I would recommend.  Time Machine backs up any external hard drive connected to your iMac. I have 2 EHD connected to my iMac that is backed up to my 3rd DHM with Time Machine.

For best performance, I'd get an iMac with an internal SSD and at least 8 GB of memory.  If you get the iMac to get Apple just RAM standard because you can update yourself much less expensive by getting the modules from Crucial.com or otherworldcomputing.com.  Be aware, however, that several iMac 21 "cannot have their RAM added after purchase. They are not updated in the user level.   All the iMac 27 "have expandable RAM user.

If you buy an iMac opportunity do not forget the former owner has prepared according to this document from Apple: what to do before you sell or give away your Mac - Apple Support. Otherwise, you could get the problems of implementation for your use.

I tried to clear the cookies and the cache of Firefox and running in safe mode with all add-ons disabled, but he always brings the 429 error message.
    I'm puzzled. Any advice?

You can delete all data stored in Firefox with a specific area through "Forget this Site" in the context menu of a history entry ("" history > view history "or" view > sidebar > History "") or via the subject: permissions page.

Using "Forget this Site" will delete all data stored in Firefox in this area as bookmarks, cookies, words of past, cache, history, and exceptions, so be careful and if you have a password or other data from that domain you don't want to lose then check that back up these data or make a comment.

You can't recover from this "forget" unless you have a backup of the files involved.

It has no lasting effect, so if come back you on such a 'forgotten' site, then the data of this Web site will be saved once more.

Create a new profile as a test to see if your profile is the source of the problem.

    See "create a profile":

If the new profile works then you can transfer files from a profile already used in the new profile, but be careful not to copy files corrupted to avoid transporting more problems.
