Transfer a Virtual Machine in Esx 2.5 to an ESX 4.1

Hi all

For a client, I need to transfer 3 virtual machines on an ESX 2.5 in stand-alone mode (local storage / VMFS2) for a new ESX 4.1 (local storage / VMFS3)

I'm looking for a solution but without success. I see two ways to to do, but I can't test it before the migration, so could you give me your advice.

(1) I copy all virtual machines in ESX 2.5 to the new storage to ESX 4.1 with scp.

I create the virtual machine with the vmdk

I put the last VmTools

Upgrade virtual hardware

(2) I have try the VmConverter username but I don'k know if he recognizes the VM Esx 2.5

Is there another solution?

Thanks for your help!

Kind regards

Franck

the best solution in my opnion is with converter http://downloads.vmware.com/d/info/datacenter_downloads/vmware_vcenter_converter_standalone/4_0?hl=pt-BR&sourceid=gd&rlz=1Q1GGLD_pt-BRBR411BR412

After the conversion to put vmware tools and after upgrade virtual HW.

  • Transfer of virtual machines from a server ESXi 3.5 to new ESXi 4.1 server. What is the procedure.

I read on how to transfer a virtual machine from one server to another using VMotion. Not 100% clear on the process again. What I see or read is when you do this since an ESXi 3.5 Server ESXi 4.1 server, I do not see any information on, if possible. In addition, I have not read if I need to convert or upgrade the virtual machine until I use it on the new server. So, my question is, are there any special instructions, conversion tools to convert a VM created 3.5 to use on the new Server 4.1? Is there a detailed procedure that I have not yet found or read best describes this process. Like I said up to now I'm not 100% clear on the procedure. Thank you.

ESX 3.5 VMs can run without modification on a host ESXi 4.1 - VMotion between the two hosts, you will stiil need to ensure CPU compatibility between the hosts.

  • addition of virtual machine / Server esx for production environment

    Hello

How can we add virtual machine or esx server for production environment?

In general... As his "simple terms?

    Install ESXi host

Install, run and connect to the host via the gateway client installed from the host on an external workstation

    Then

    OR THE OTHER

Install and run the converter on each physical computer that you want to become a virtual machine

Once finished, turn off power to virtual and physical.

    OR

Create a virtual machine and install the o/s CD drive.

What you want is way off the coast without 1 million questions about your installation.

  • What is the best method to transfer a virtual machine from one PC to another?

I am a novice in VMWare workstation. I created my first SharePoint 2010 development VM, and my boss wants me to give him a copy of my SP 2010 VM. He told me to just give him the. VMX file, but I believe that there must be a better method to transfer a virtual machine from one PC to another.

    Thanks in advance.

    Coltrane.

    Coltrane,

to transfer a virtual machine from one PC to another, shut down the virtual computer and copy the complete folder with all the files (vmx, vmdk,...) on another PC.

A thin to keep in mind (outside the Windows license) if the virtual machine is one attached to your network, you must change the copied disk - as you would with a cloned physical system - to have a unique host name, MAC address and IP address.

  • Migration of virtual machines in ESX 3.0.1 & 3.5 to vSphere 5

We have severely old stand alone ESX 3.0.1 and 3.5 servers and finally acquired new equipment and a cluster in VMware vSphere Essentials and try to migrate virtual machines, so we can remove the old assets. Using Converter Standalone 5 I only abe to pass successfully the Windows 2008 SMV ESX 3.5. All Windows 2003/XP virtual machines fail with this generic message "Unable to obtain material information to the computer selected."

I tried various solutions of workaround mentioned around forums such as change the Linux guest OS during the migration and take snapshots of the source without result. Joint are recent newspapers Converter - will try and earlier version of the converter now as I have seen mention of this being a potential solution.

Ah, I see - redefine was useful in some cases, when the Iso Coldclone was used.
This CD is no longer available

Just copy the complete directories - the vmdk formats are compatible - and where the new server don't like old VMS they can usually be adjusted with small text file modifications

  • How to make for the Hyper-V role to run on a virtual machine in esx 5

    Hello

I am trying to run the Hyper-V role on a virtual machine in vmware esxi 5. I'm under eindows Server 20008 R2 datacenter edition and install esx I have on a server dell with 32 GB of Ram and 2 intel Xeon processors. the material is active VT. I get the below error message all the time.

    Hyper-V cannot be installed.

the processor on this computer is not compatible with Hyper-v. to install the role of HRT, the processor must have a version support for hardware-assisted virtualization, and this feature must be enabled in the BIOS.

    any help is appreciated.

  • Transfer of virtual machines for a backend of the DG

Environment: 11r2 RHE Linux 5.8 host, running on a VMware VM.

My VMware admins need to move the main VM1 to VM3 Oracle server. This primary has 2 data associated with guard rescue on 2 servers different VMs.

"In theory", there will be no problem spending the principal server a virtual computer to another (other systems, such as Windows, seem to have no downtime when this happens). "In theory" this transfer will take less than a minute (it does with Windows servers). I'm guessing that RHEL and Oracle may not be so forgiving.

One of you gurus out there have knowledge/experience about it? If so, is there a list of the steps I have to take beforehand? The traps to monitor?

Thanks for the reply. With the great terror in my heart, I did experience today in the name of SCIENCE.

The Oracle server of above-mentioned production (a guardian of primary data feed to 2 gap) and a separate Watch (whose primary is an Oracle instance of different production on another virtual machine), both have been migrated in an active State to a separate virtual computer.

Verdict: there no noticeable change in performance, without errors, etc.

  • HO to import a virtual machine in esx host

    Hi all,

I have a cluster of small esx (2host clustered in a datacenter) manged by a machine virtual vcenter. Now, I installed an esx on a small host outside the cluster, do some test activities that must be totally separate from my cluster of production.

Before you perform the test esx host, I created some virtual machines in the production cluster. Now I want to import into my test esx host without have to reinstall them. Can I do this? the only way to achieve that I thought is to add my existing test in my data center host, leaving outside the cluster. then move my vms and remove it then, to manage alone.

Is this possible without any risk to my cluster of production? is there any other solutions?

    Thank you very much

    Paolo

Yes, but you cannot connect a free version, you need a license.

To not change your existing cluster, simply add the host in the data center (so it's outside the cluster).

When you are finished, just disconnect and remove the unused host.

  • Create the virtual machine in ESX 4

    Hi guys -.

I do not remember where / y at - it an option to choose the version of the hardware for a virtual machine.  I want to create a model from a RIS server and my dilemma is ESX 4 to create a virtual machine that will be running on ESX 3.5 until the environment is upgraded to 4.0.  I have improved my POC hosts to 4.0 (can only RIS servers in POC environment).  Please let me know if there is an option to change the material to 3.5 instead of 4.0 on my new virtual machine.

    Thank you!!

    Hello.

When you create the new virtual machine, choose the custom configuration option, then you can specify the version of virtual machine to use.

    Good luck!

  • Backup of virtual machines in ESX

    Hello

I have several VM in two ESX 4 day 1 host. Now, I need to make a backup of all the virtual machines. But I still think prepare a routine that make this successive copies. VMware has a program/system to planificate this? Thank you.

Best way is to use 3rd party specialized solution. I prefer Veeam Backup.

Since you are using vSphere Essentials check out Veeam Essentials - all-in-one package for SMB with discount.

  • Computer as a virtual machine in ESX?

I'm sure that this issue is buried somewhere in the documentation, but can I install VMware Workstation as a virtual machine on my ESX host? If not, there are workarounds (I know that it would be unsupported of course if that is the case)?

    http://www.keithsopher.com/Images/VCP_logo_40.gif

This may work - it depends on the CPU and the ESX version you have

cheat "is a fool trying to settle inside a virtual machine?" - the workstation Installer test is easy

    Add the line

    monitor_control.restrict_backdoor = 'true '.

for the vmx ESX - VM file

to run a VM nested inside this ESX - VM you need more parameters, but this depends on the CPU, ESX and WS-version

read 'Nested VMs Running' of jmattson - see

    http://communities.VMware.com/people/jmattson?view=documents

This document covers most of the possible scenarios, and it will tell you what settings to add.

What is the purpose of your idea?

You might be interested in studying the workstation as a program itself? - or do you need run VMs nested first?

If it's the last that I would higly recommend using a 2003-32 bit VM install Workstation in.

I use virtual machines in SMV much and from my 2003 experience is by far the most powerful home under these conditions.

    Better than Linux Significalntly...

  • Install ESX 3.5 in a virtual machine on ESX 3.5

I'm under ESX 3.5 update 2 and I would like to install a 3.5 VM ESX to test different configurations.  I've seen many examples of ESX running on one machine virtual Workstation but strangely I found no examples of what I'm trying to do, although I saw a thread on execution of ESX 4.0 ESX 3.5, but no details on the configuration steps.

I created the virtual machine as another 64-bit with 4 CPUs and 16 GB of RAM and E1000 card.  After creating the VM, I edited the vmx file to add

    monitor_control.restrict_backdoor = TRUE

    monitor_control.vt32 = TRUE

as in the examples of workstation I saw online.

The installation went well, but when I execute the VM it pegs all 4 processors constantly and runs really slowly.  Is this an impossible installation, or is there something else I need to change?  If there is another thread that answers this point please to her.

    -GDillon

ESX 3.5 is not compatible 32-bit VT you need an AMD64 host with AMD - V support.  See nested running VMs.
