  If I read this correctly, you have a portable computer that do not have an operating system on it.  You try to install Vista and get the error.
  You've restarted the Vista installation?  So then you get the same error? If you have tried to install more than once and continue to receive this error, check that the laptop is capable of Vista?  You may need to check with the manufacturer of the laptop to see if it is able to support Vista.   If you go to programs and features, and then on the left side you should see a link for "Daily display installed."  Which would then show the list of updates with the State which will show you if it failed or not.
