  The location of your directory of images depends on how you configure your instance of the APEX. Do you know which version of the database you use? And if you have configured your APEX instance to use the integrated bridge, which would be the default configuration on Oracle XE and 11g. Or you setup APEX with mod_plsq or the earpiece of the APEX? Assuming that you have installed XE, and you use the gateway incorporated, then your images are actually stored in the database (XML DB), and you need access to your images by FTP or WebDAV folder. There are several posts out there that talk about connecting in the folder of images by FTP, a here: http://www.apex-blog.com/oracle-apex/accessing-i-using-ftp-170.html if you use all other configurations, your images directory would simply be a local folder on the computer running your web server.

  Regarding the creation of a theme, it is not really a 'guide' out there that documents how to build a new theme. But the thematic structure, models, etc. are documented in the user's guide for the APEX. To begin to build a new theme, I would recommend starting with an existing one that you like, ideally one that has been recently upgraded by our care. I would recommend themes 21-23 as starting points. And then I create a CSS file to cover some of the classes in the CSS file of the theme, instead of directly changing the CSS file that comes with APEX. You must also use tools like Firebug, or integrated in Chrome/Safari developer functions to try different CSS settings. With our modernized themes, you should be able to get most customizations through CSS. So I'd say staying away in fact change the templates as much as possible, at least at the beginning.

• Changing colors of the themes

  What is the best way to go to change the colors of the themes? For example, I like models etc. 7 Blue modern theme, but how/where would change color from blue to yellow for example? Edit the CSS for each referenced page? It's pretty simple to do, or is it better to leave it to the CSS experts?

  The colors are defined in the CSS files. They are found in the directory images/themes on the webserver/listener Apex. (I don't know how to change these if XE or 11 G).
  Some themes are also use images. So if you change a color in CSS you must also create a new image with the corresponding color.

• Apex 4 20 - Modern Blue IR thematic issue in IE8

  The DHTML drop down on the left of the search magnifying glass icon does not appear in IE 8. It seems to "hide behind" another element.
  Works well in FF.
  Tried on several PC, High Commission fails on IE8 and works in FF.
  
  Is this a problem in our installation of IE8, or is associated with the theme?

  The issue you reported is a known problem - http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/database/application_express/html/4.0_known_issues.html - followed with bug number 9893492. When running Internet Explorer and using themes that are not running in standards mode, the search drop-down column is cut off after a few pixels.

  Workaround solution:
  Place you in one of the new, modernized themes in APEX 4.0, which are running in standards mode. Note that this will change the appearance of the application. A patch for the older themes is prepared.
  If you prefer not to update the theme of your application, an alternative is available. This is add the snippet of CSS code according to one of the 2 places listed below the extract:

  option 1. In your template page, in the section "Header", just before the tag closing.
  option 2. If you do not want to change your page template you can add it to page 0 in your application. You can do this by adding a region "HTML" with "No. Template" selected with an equal to the excerpt of 'region' Source. Note: If your application does not already contain a 0 page, you need to create it.

  Sometimes, we here on the old themes of the modern vs here on the forum. I interpret this as being those that use CSS for the layout of the control and those who use HTML tables. I have a few questions about this:
  
  1. What is the difference practice for a developer using a theme from Table vs CSS?

  As Tobias pointed out, the main difference is a page structure for the most part based on tables (old themes) vs a DIV for the most part based structure in the new themes page. While the CSS has been used to the old themes as well, we have now moved much more elements of formatting in CSS and out patterns, reducing the HTML about half making it much less complex models and the pages real much lighter weight. And the more recent themes use a DOCTYPE, while the old themes do not have. The DOCTYPE calls essentially different versions of Internet Explorer to render pages in standard instead of quirks of Microsoft mode. This facilitates the creation of cross browser compatible templates and pages is much easier. Internet Explorer 6 is no longer supported by the manufacturer of the APEX and applications using the new themes. We will continue to modernize our themes and expect all the old themes - of course, they will continue to work, if you have older applications that use them or create new applications based on an older theme to an application.

  You can try to backup the list extensions via Firefox help (Alt + H) > troubleshooting information > copy to the Clipboard.
