Updating ESX

I just loaded a new ESX 3.5 server. I downloaded all the patches on a FTP server and extracts in a directory that I can access via FTP. I connect to my ESX Server and run esxupdate d ftp://192.168.10.85/ b update, but it keeps the slightest error out telling me that I am not under the command correctly. Does anyone know the correct syntax for it? Or is there a better way to install all updates with esxupdate?

Thank you

Scott

We do the same thing... An old example of our syntax

esxcfg-firewall -allowOutgoing
esxupdate --noreboot -r ftp://x.x.x.x/3_5Patches/Patch1/ESX350-200810201-UG update
esxupdate --noreboot -r ftp://x.x.x.x/3_5Patches/Patch2/ESX350-200810202-UG update
esxupdate --noreboot -r ftp://x.x.x.x/3_5Patches/Patch3/ESX350-200811402-SG update
esxupdate --noreboot -r ftp://x.x.x.x/3_5Patches/Patch4/ESX350-200811409-BG update
esxupdate --noreboot -r ftp://x.x.x.x/3_5Patches/Patch5/ESX350-200811408-BG update
esxcfg-firewall -blockOutgoing

IP addresses have been x'd out to protect the innocent.

    I tried:

-Reinstall UM with new db (sql server)(nothing new)

    -Reinstall ESX (nothing new)

but the update of ESXi 4.1u1, ESX 3.5 317866 works very well.

This is because you have not installed the patch ESX350-201012410-BG.

As stated in the previous post.

To install the update manually and allow more updates will take place, you must download patch ESX350-201012410-BG of the VMware Web site.

Unzip and SCP to your ESX host and run the command b ESX350-201012410-BG - nosig one esxupdate update

There may be a necessary prereq. I must first install ESX350-201012404.

Same steps as above and updated race esxupdate b ESX350-201012404-BG - nosig

The switch - nosig does not check if the hash of the file.

    You'll be fine after that.

  • Command updating ESX Server 3i, 3.5.0 build #207095

I have a server ESX 3i, 3.5.0 build from 207095 and I'm trying to update with the latest patch (ESXe350-201302401-O - SG.zip) which I copied to a folder on the local drive:

    "/ vmfs/volumes/OS-Datastore/Patches / '.

    I run the commands:

    «esxupdate install /vmfs/volumes/OS-Datastore/Patches/ESXe350-201302401-O-SG.zip b»

    ... as well as

    "esxupdate install /vmfs/volumes/OS-Datastore/Patches/ESXe350-201302401-O-SG.zip d.

... and it is for me to give a new prompt. That means that means and why I can't update my installation?

I also extracted the original zip file and created these sub zip files:

    "ESXe350-201302401-I - SG.zip".

    "ESXe350-201302401-T - BG.zip" and

    "ESXe350-201302401-C - SG.zip.

... I tried the command on them as anything does not.

How can I get this patch inistalled?

    What is the right syntax?

For more information about this fix, see Critical Impact: VMware ESXi 3.5, Patch ESXe350-201012401-I-BG: apply this hotfix to continue to apply patches on the ESXi 3.5 hosts after June 2011 (1030002).

  • Updating ESX to ESXI 5.1 4.1

We currently use ESX 4.1 and want to upgade ESXI 5.1. Are there instructions available through video upgrade or documentation? Also, how the new licence with respect to the use of memory and CPU in ESXI 5.1. What are the benefits of upgrading to 5.1?

    Thank you

    Scott

    Hi Scott,.

    Check this box:

    http://www.VMware.com/files/PDF/Techpaper/VMware-vSphere-50-upgrade-checklists.PDF

    http://KB.VMware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalID=2032757

In ESXi 5.1, this link will give you a quick way to see license restrictions. Moreover, like a physical processor of rule 1 = 1 license (no carrots or vRAM limitations).

    http://www.VMware.com/products/Datacenter-Virtualization/vSphere/compare-editions.html

In the advantages, firstly, a change of ESX to ESXi. You will get a smaller and more secure hypervisor.

Since version upgrade from 4.1 to 5.1, this will depend on what version you have... for example, if you use now 'advantage' you will have "business" in version 5.1 as advantage licenses no longer exist.

Then you have many new available technologies, better technology HA that uses the heartbeat data store, you have more features such as VSA, vSphere replication, features improved, such as the Protection of the data instead of retrieving data... and the list goes just. Oh, you also have VMFS5 which is more flexible and optimized than VMFS3 (ATS instead of lun level blocks, only 1 block size, the larger capacities of data store, etc. etc.)

Know that when the upgrade of the service console ports will turn to ports (perhaps you need to enable HA on these manually later). Beware if you are using third party agents that maybe they do not work in the new hypervisor, check your scripts in case you have also some commands no longer exist, no VCB more, Manager update won't let you patch your virtual machines. So, carefully read the upgrade guides

    Best regards and good luck!

    The error data are:

Message - two copies of the bulletin ESX410-GA-esxupdate definitions with

    unmatched attributes.

    Errno - 5

Description - the format of the metadata is invalid.

We have already installed "pre-upgrade-from-ESX4.0-to-4.1.0-0.0.260247-release" and tried to re - download a new copy of the update.  Unfortunately, research is turn up nothing on the error message and our feeble attempts to solve the problem have failed!

    Any help is appreciated!

    Thank you

    Grant

I ended up remove (renamed) a file called bulletins.zip and re-run update esxupdate and complete control. I'm not able to tell the exact path that I am on my iPhone.

Try "find /-name bulletins.zip" to locate the file, rename it to bulletins.old and then try the esxupdate.

  • Updating ESX 3i 5 - how add/detect a USB external storage on the host drive

I guess that this has been asked several times in the past, but I can't seem to get this to work for me.  All I want to do is use this USB external drive to back up files hard find in my volume of "datastore1".  I would like to implement a script, or even do it manually, where I tell you about my ESXi host just copy the files in VMFS volume in the external USB storage drive.

My physical server is a Dell PowerEdge 2950, and it uses ESX 3i update 5.  I use a 250 GB Maxtor One Touch II USB external storage device, and it has been formatted with NTFS.

Currently, I don't even know the controls able to detect this USB device.   I read only so that my drive to be recognized by the host, it must be ext3 or FAT32.  NTFS would be 'read only '.  I was hoping I could format the external drive through the ESXi (by command line), but maybe I'm deceiving myself.

    Thanks in advance

I'm sorry to say that you are trying is not possible - external USB are not usable by ESXi or ESX =

  • Update esx.conf file

We have a situation where we have to update the file on all hosts esx.conf...

The attached sript will first put the server in maintenance mode, run esxcfg-module command using the link and then take the host out of maintenance mode...

My problem is the change of wil not come into effect until a reboot are happening... So I need the script to reboot the host before taking it out of maintenance mode...

However I need the host to restart and get out of mainatance mode before putting the host in maintenance mode...

    I've made a few changes.

    (1) inside of the loop where you go through all the ESX servers in the cluster the $_ variable is the purpose of VMHostImpl and the variable $esx is the object of HostSystem.

I fixed that in the 2 wait loops

    (2) I use the UpdateViewData method to update the property $task.Info.State.

It is faster than loading the complete task object over and over again.

  • Why is so slow to fix (install updates) ESX

Maybe it's my configuration or maybe it's just a poorly designed packaging system, but someone can tell me why it takes so long to install updates in ESX (3.5 u4)?

It may take a good 20-30 minutes to install a fix how one of the CPU is located at 100% for most of the time, it happens through all my guests. Surely, it is not intended to be slow so painstakinly.

Any ideas? Would it be the number of updates, I have in my base? Joel

Maybe it's my configuration or maybe it's just a poorly designed packaging system, but someone can tell me why it takes so long to install updates in ESX (3.5 u4)?

I don't know why.  Reclamation is 2 things, it copies ALL of the updates to the ESX directly.  It then retrieves them.  But before he starts, it queries the server known ESX updates, then decides who is applicable, then it installs updates.

It takes a long time to copy files 120 + (5 GB of files) and then do an inventory, then extract, then install.  You can see the part of the installation in the VI Client, but must see esxtop 'watching' the other process.  Sometimes, it can take an hour to restore, even when there is only 1 or 2 patches to install...

Again, I used the plink command, but this time I used the m parameter to pass the sudo commands.

Note that the script takes all ESX hosts in a specific data center, but this can easily be changed.

Also note that if the DRS is not set to "auto", you must boot the vMotions yourself from the VIC.

The temporary file that I use to pass the command sudo for ESX server can be located somewhere else of course.

vSphere license keys are provided for major releases, so there shouldn't be the need of another license key.
