Upgrade 8540w
Hello
I have a HP 8540w Elitebook with a GPU FX880m, 8 GB of RAM and processor 720QM. I wait with upgrade CPU and GPU components, but I heard that HP Bios have white lists that determine the type of material that can be installed.
I usually use this computer for 3DS Max, rhinoceros and some games, so my questions are:
-Should I go with the HP FX1800m as my GPU?
-The machine will accept an i7 940XM for the CPU? (the highest stock CPU is the 820QM)
-In addition, what I have to buy these components of HP, or, for example, a second hand removed from another computer CPU is ok?
-What should I buy a new heatsink?
-J' have currently the 120W adapter would I need to upgrade to a one 150W?
For model consumer laptops. the graphics card is usually not extensible. The only block I've seen in the forums of consumer is processors and some wifi cards for various reasons that are just speculation. As for all the other components, I did not for the moment.
However, you do not have a laptop model professional and business models generally have more options than the consumption patterns. I recommend posting in the company support forums found here.

HP Elitebook 8540W CPU Upgrade!
Hello
I was just wondering if any1 can help me to make sure that if my HP Elitebook 8540W will support the processor bellow.
http://Ark.Intel.com/products/50067/Intel-Core-I7-2720QM-processor-%286M-cache-2_20-GHz%29
Thnx in advance!
Hello:
The desired processor is not supported as shown in the above messages + there are different system advice even upgrade to a quad core processor, if you have a dual core processor.
BIOS update release notes indicate no added support for the processor you want to switch to another.
Here is the link to the Service Manual: Please refer to Chapter 3, page 26.
Look at the cards system. As you can see, there is a map of system for dual-core processors: 520 M, 540 M, 620 M and a different motherboard for quad-core processors: 720QM, 820QM
http://bizsupport1.Austin.HP.com/BC/docs/support/SupportManual/c02196457/c02196457.PDF
So, if you do not already have a 720QM in your laptop, you can only change your laptop with one of the processors dual-core.

HP Elitebook 8540w RAM Upgrade
Hello
I am currently in the process of upgrading the RAM in my Elitebook 8540w. I have the i7 Intel M620 (dual-core) and bought the computer in August 2010. I also have Windows 7 Professional 64 bit and 2x2gb (total 4 GB) of RAM.
I watched this document in order to see what the options were: http://www8.hp.com/h20195/v2/GetDocument.aspx?docname=c04150938&ver=25
Now, I see 2 contradictory statements in this document. On page 7, it is said that 8 GB modules are only compatible with quad-core processors (represented by two asterisks) and that it would be possible to have 8 GB (2x4gb) total in my case. Then, on page 18, the table indicates that a configuration of 2x8GB (16GB total) would be possible since there are no asterisks in addition to this configuration.
So who is the maximum I can put in: 2x4gb or 2x8GB?
Thank you!
Hello
The document is for many products for the complete series. Looks like your machine is a machine double heart so it only it supports only 8 GB for 2 slots (the first * indicates 8Gb each slot, and a quad core, you can get up to 4 x 8 = 32 GB).
Kind regards.

Upgrade the card video EliteBook 8540w
I have an EliteBook 8540w with the Quadro FX 880 M. I was wondering if it was possible at this level towards the M5800 over-pants and, if so, would I need to change my radiator?
The reason why I want to do is to be able to eventually turn 4 monitors to my office. I'm also open to other suggestions/solutions to achieve this.
I am running Windows 7 32 bit on a Core i7 processor, but will probably upgrade to x 64 when I understand this problem.
Thanks in advance for your answers.
Hello
Yes, it is possible to substitute the over-pants M5800. You will also need a new heat sink...

EliteBook 8540w: upgrade memory RAM EliteBook 8540w
Hi, I want to upgrade the memory of 4 GB (2 x 2 GB) in my laptop. I have 2 slots of memory in the laptop.
No. my laptop is WD927EA #ARL
Intel Core i5 processor.
I bought 2 x 4 GB PC3 - 10600 CL9 204 Pin SODIMM, but it does not work.
No idea what to buy?
Here is the Manual:
It's the 4 listed compatible GB module:
4 GB (PC3-12800 1600 MHz, DDR3) 641369-001
The DDR3-1600 is apparently supposed to downclock at 1333 mhz.
The modules have been listed compatible and had complete specifications, that latency was listed as CL-11, so perhaps the CL-9 latency is the problem with your modules.

EliteBook 8540w: identification of Slot Correct memory for twin Enable memory RAM upgrade
I just bought an opportunity Elitebook 8540w with i7 quad core and four memory locations (I love it!). It is running 64-bit Windows 7 Professional he came with a 4 GB memory module and I bought an additional module of 4 GB to 8 GB of total RAM.
I have the HP document that shows both modules of memory of 4 GB, it takes in the memory slot 1 and the other in the memory slot 3 for the proper functioning of the memory double channel. All together right?
Not quite. In the Elitebook 8540w, primary under the keyboard memory locations are clearly labelled '1' and '2' However, the locations of memory expansion on the underside of the chassis are also clearly labelled Opps '1' and '2 '! There is no '3' and there is no '4' in which three vacant slots we installed the second module of 4 GB for the proper functioning of the dual memory channel?
All the facts on how to proceed would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

EliteBook 8540w: Upgrade SATA Elitebook 8540
Hi all.
I'm updating my laptop CD-ROM in 250 GB SSD drive and there is problem with R/W speed.
Current SSDS must use SATA 6 Gbit/S to work at maximum speed.
Is it possible to upgrade my SATA 3 Gb/s to SATA 6 Gbit/s?
Thank you.
Yes it predates mSATA WSSD readers so the only way to have 2 hard/SSD drives is to use the main Bay SATA 2.5 inch and then also the 'bay expansion' which can have a second HDD with the right adapter or an optical drive. Here is the Service Manual:
It also precedes SATA-III so your best speed is SATA-300, but I think that the Bay extension interface is SATA-150. You should put the operating system on the disk SSD in the main Bay, and then the regular mechanical HDD in the expansion bay for storage only for optimal performance.

HP EliteBook 8540w blue screen after upgrade KTH memory X3BS / 4G
Hello
I bought two new Modules of KTH X3BS / 4G for my Elitbook 8740w. They appear in the BIOS as 8 GB. RAM test, says that everything is oke. When I start the laptop, there are all kinds of blue screens. Above all, he said DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL. Maybe it's a timing issue. Where can I change the timings? I don't see any option in the BIOS.
Edit: tried to boot linux. also does not work and crashes. I did update the BIOS to the latest version...
Edit2: perhaps, the problem is that the memory is supported only on QUAD Core Mashines 8740w. My machine is only dual core i5 m520.
It's crazy. Concerning
# It is not crazy at all. It is located.
Contact the vendor you purchased modules of for an RMA number for the defective memory modules. KIngston ensures that these modules run in your laptop.
You cannot change the timings primary or secondary, all laptops, with the notable exception of lovers of high end and games books. Portable public like yours have limited the BIOS options that are designed to protect the average user himself.

Graphics card (includes the thermal replacement hardware): -
Good day my Pro friends! Here me again. I am in a quandry that needs expert advice:
I have an Elitebook 8540, w / 720qm CPU Intel. I run Win.7Pro. 64 bit. now, according to the maintenance manual, the ram for this unit should be a maximum of 16 GB, (I know) and uses 10600 or 1333 MHz modules. Now, every time I check with one of the manufacturers of memory, on the compatibility updates, they list, (or if I use their scan) I can go to modules 12800 - 1600 MHz. At the present time, I have 6 GB of 1333 MHz (3x2Go) modules, and is my performance rating: 7.0 - CPU and memory to 5.9. I am told by a friend of tech, to improve my memory, because the side of the memory should be higher than the processor for optimum performance. I tried 2-4 GB, modules of 1600 MHz and index performance changed where the memory was higher. (don't remember the # s) Good. However, by doing a performance check with a program of 'notes of the system', he said that memory was not working @ 1600 MHz, but about 663 MHZ and with 1333 MHz, is about 533 MHz. The modules of 1600 MHz were borrowed to test. Now, I'm going to 16 GB (4 x 4) @ 1600 MHz. But, I wonder if this will improve performance, or be a waste of money?
Given that HP specifications say it can handle 16 GB, but only @ 10600 MHz or 1333 MHz, will be 1600 MHz bennifit? Will it work OK.? Thank you my friends, for any input!
You definitely want a number pair of corresponding modules, so if nothing else add another module, as well as the three, you already have. Your score went up when you install modules of 2 x 8 GB because, among other things, allowing memory to run "dual channel", which is a bit faster. Dual channel only works if identical modules are coupled together.
You have already shown that the RAM is unable to run at 1600 mhz, the best it will do is run at 1333 due to hardware limitations. That 533 and 663 are actually half speed. You double this figure because it is the memory of the "double data rate". 16 gigs is a luxury that few computer users really need but if you want to spend money you can.
As a reminder, you can easily install 4 x 4 GB of DDR3 - 1600 but it runs at 1333 mhz but will be dual channel. I don't think that DDR3-1600 is more expensive than the DDR3-1333 at this point and probably more easily accessible. My best advice is to get another module of 2 gig like the one you have.

EliteBook 8540w: Elite book 8540w Windows 7 or Windows 10?
Hi all
I have a HP elitebook 8540w laptop with Windows 7. It is advisable to upgrade to windows 10?
@Mrstenter, I don't think you understand the topic at hand.
HP Support Assistant won't see 10 Windows is a viable OS for this laptop, so, it will not find something for her.
While most of the components have in fact several updates, available from the OEM component, HP has been terrible to sustain this business 'quality' "Élite" mobile Workstation.
The Support Site for the 8540w was a mess, and terribly inconsistent, almost all the time it was available, it's a big reason that when it was time for an update of the platform, I went for a Dell M4800 instead of the EliteBook/ZenBook/s comparible.
Now, @Bredzy , insofar as Windows 10 is concerned; I leave the upgrade happens to mine:
I tried 8 and 8.1 on it and went back to 7 times.
10 has been good so far.
All the drivers I have in place before the upgrade were still in place after the upgrade, which was nice, and same OneDrive is synchronization, despite the fact that I am not connect with my hotmail account.
If you do not rely on the card mobile broadband, you'll be probably a bit stuck here.
I have not tried the once again fingerprint reader, again, because even in 7, the weird mix of validity and ProtectTools jived never really for me, besides, PT integrated only with IE, which I almost never use, so it was pretty useless once the laptop is unlocked at the start.
If you want to get most of your drivers updated before the upgrade, links here is what I use, from legitimate sources (Intel, AMD or Nvidia, HP)
At HP:
Sp67214.exe BIOS F.50 (July 8, 2014)
USB 3.0 Firmware 3.0.34.08 F402003 (August 1, 2012) sp54705.exeUSB 3.0 driver 2.1.36.0(1 août 2012) sp54511.exe
Intel IMEI/AMT Firmware 6.2.40.1045(31 Oct 2012) sp59666.exe
Sp59684.exe Version: 6.2.40.1045 (November 5, 2012) Intel AMT to IMEI/GROUND
Video of NVIDIA Driver 341.49 Rev.F(23 Mar 2015) sp70983.exe
Fingerprint Sensor 4.5.133.0(20 juin 2014) sp66915.exe
Quick Launch buttons 6.50.18.1 REV: A sp49456.exe
Sp46999.exe Media Card Reader 2.14.00.05(8 Jan 2010)
AMD:
Choice 1: Over-Pants Mobile, specially for this laptop
Choice 2: Radeon Mobile, which works very well
Intel:
Wireless (I have the 6300, that's what I'm a link)
I would recommend the driver package, PROSet is not useful for the normal needs of WiFi

HP 8540w: HP 8540w unknown material
Hello
I use a HP Elitebook 8540w and recently upgraded to windows 8.1 (64-bit). There is an unknown device on my PCI Express Root Complex, with the hardware ID following:
ACPI\VEN_HPQ & DEV_0004
ACPI\HPQ0004

It's hard drive (sometimes called Guard 3D player) accelerometer.
Try this driver:

It's also interesting:
Apparently the Windows 8.1 does not want to cooperate with the drive Guard software 3D.

EliteBook 8540w freezes at startup screen Windows after the installation of 2 x 4 GB
Hello
I have a laptop Elitebook 8540w. I wanted to upgrade to 2 x 4 GB 2x2gb RAM memory. I did buy a kit of 2 x 4 GB I wanted, instead, I bought two chips of memory from 4 GB of HP.
After having replaced the modules of the notebook does not start.
What has been done:
-Restore default bios
My first question is: I realize, it is best to purchase a kit of 2 matching tokens, but it's a must?
Thanks in advance,

Hi 2worlds,.
Your Elitebook 8540w is a commercial product and for your question more exposure, I would post in the trade forums. Here is a link to the forum Commercial Notebook.

Where the second RAM on the Elitebook 8540w location?
Hello, I have the Elitebook 8540w with processor i5 and windows 7 Pro. I bought two 8 GB cards to increase the ram, but can find accommodation with a stick of ram in it.
The manual says there are two slots for ram and it can be upgraded to 16 GB. But the video installation shows a slot under the keyboard. I thought he would have another slot somewhere once I opened and removed the keyboard. But there is no. Also, I opened the compartment in the bottom where other portable store their ram and it was not a slot. My computer said it has 4 GB of ram installed on the computer. The stick I found was only 2 GB, which means that there are another 2 GB key somewhere. Anyone know where and how to get home? Thank you very much.
Best,
Jeremy
You are the very welcome.
This isn't the problem.
The problem is due to your mobile workstation with the i5 processor - it only supports 2 x 4 GB of memory.
You must have the quad core i7 for PC to support 2 x 8 GB of memory.
Please refer to the link below, page 7, double asterisk.
http://h18000.www1.HP.com/products/QuickSpecs/13529_ca/13529_ca.PDF
I quote:
* 8 GB SODIMM is supported only on the quad-core processors.
