Upgrade from XP to Windows 8 without SP3?

Hello

I had a computer that is running Windows XP SP3, and thinking when win 8 came out it would be time to upgrade I installed Windows 8 Preview of consumption on another partition.  Then when Release Preview is out, I formatted the hard drive and installed.  Today, that I decided to purchase the upgrade, but read that I had to reinstall XP, so I put my drives and installed, but I could not install updates.  I had a Service Pack 3 disk, and I put this in and installed, restarted, but was met with the black screen that says "Windows has not stopped right."  I clicked on "Start Windows normally", but it just rebooted and I was back to the black screen.  Then I tried safe mode, but that no longer works.  I rebooted and restored from the recovery partition, and then follow the instructions here: https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups=#! msg/microsoft.public.windowsupdate/4-jCtXsbshs/HBI-0476Wj8J

Service Pack 2 gave me the same problems as fact SP3.  I did some more research and found that I could pass Preview Release, if I had xp slot, so hoping I have had slapped enough XP already, I have in my drive of the Preview version, but it wouldn't install because it was a record of 64-bit.

Is there a way I can spend to Win 8 what I have?

Thanks in advance.

EDIT: I restored windows and installed a bunch of updates to catalog.update.microsoft.com (from 2006) then tried SP2 again and same problem, even if safe mode worked.  Went into safe mode and ran CHKDSK.  Nothing found.

I found the solution.  After you install SP2, restart in safe mode and run "REGEDIT" from the BEGINNING--> run.  Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHNE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Services/Intelppm.  Change the value "start" 4, and then restart.

It fixed for me.  I installed SP3 started to windows update until it was realized and upgraded.

My computer is now running on windows 8 :D

  • 'Upgrade' from Vista to Windows 7 without a clean install

Is it possible to upgrade from Vista Home Premium 64-bit for Windows 7 Professional 64 bit. I searched through the forums and most of the responses seem to confuse "upgrade" with "clean install". I bought the Windows 7 upgrade in order to keep all of my existing programs and settings in place not re - install everything from the beginning.

Is it possible to upgrade Windows Vista to Windows 7? If this isn't the case, then I don't see how Microsoft can claim to offer a "upgrade path". I don't think a "clean install" is the generally accepted definition of an upgrade.

    It is NOT possible!

  • Just upgraded from XP to Windows 7 without any apparent problems.

A few minutis in a video game (Neverwinter Nights 2), the computer turns off completely, as I pulled the plug.  By pressing the pc power button, a dialog box appears wanting to know if I want to start Windows in normal mode, indicating that Windows did not shut down properly.
Selection of normal mode, Windows starts well.   This same game worked fine under XP.   I tried a new game (Dragon Age), with the same result.   I installed all the latest drivers for my video & sound card.

There are a few possibilities.  The first is that your power supply in your PC is failing or not able to provide enough power.  While you play a game, the power supply could be difficult to provide the power of your graphics card.  The more you play, the hotter the PSU gets.  As a power supply gets warmer, it cannot deliver as all the juice.  For example, you could eventually hit a point where it fails and the computer turns off.

Another possibility is associated with your CPU heat.  If the CPU is too hot, the BIOS can shut down your computer.  However, as a general rule, you are filled with a blue error screen and not just one stop when this happens.

Finally, in very rare circumstances, you may have a motherboard BIOS that fires to stop something in the game code.  I have seen this on old 16-bit, and games with insulation of memory today in games, it seems very unlikely, it does, but you might want to see if your motherboard has an updated BIOS and install it.

My first guess is right, that it is related to energy consumption.  If you happen to have a different power supply, you can try swapping them and to see if the other worked it, or if it of too much, take it to a professional and have them examine the question for you.

  • The upgrade from Vista to Windows 7: How can I make sure that I keep Microsoft Office

A few months back I took advantage of this offer to upgrade from Vista to Windows 7 for a discounted price. After that I downloaded the upgrade file, Upgrade Advisor told me that because I'm using Vista business and I was upgrade 7, that my computer would probably be home must pass through with a 'clean install', thus wiping my hard drive.

That's fine with me, I could just move my documents and Favorites on an external hard drive. But I'm afraid that the upgrade will be wipe my Microsoft Office programs.

I bought this computer a few years ago. I don't even know if I bought the program with office bundled with it, or if I bought it separately (and probably the discs are somewhere in storage).

How can I make this update without losing Microsoft Office? Is it possible to confirm if my word has come with my computer or if I installed it separately. If it came with it, and I lose it, certainly there must be a free way for me to recover. Right?

Any other advice for someone planning on the upgrade?

    Thank you!

You're the one who knows if you installed Office.

Office (Word, etc.) comes for free with Windows. you have to buy.

If Office is preinstalled, it was a test.

A clean installation will wipe everything.

    You cannot transfer programs.

It needs to be reinstalled from the original media.

If this could have something to do with the new pads MSFT security permissions on folders (with padlock) during a upgrade as well as related hidden junctions by compared to the user by the system?

I tried to install the update system of Lenovo and MSFT Windows Installer Clean Up clean in the hope that the software would help alleviate my problems. See below the link on advice from MSFT on the same error.

    http://support.Microsoft.com/%2Fkb%2F328162

Unfortunately, I cannot even load the previously recommended THAT MSFT software to solve this error.  I also tried to install the software as 'Run as Administrator' and in 'Safe Mode '.  Even if I could not load the software recommended to MSFT, I was able to install iTunes to Apple through Apple Software Update, I guess, that they do not use Windows Installer.

With the new structure of junction there is several files or links to the same folder across file system, if it is a folder authorization number which specific files/links are I need to remove restrictions?

Any help would be appreciated, if not I'll have to do a clean install and individually reinstall each piece of software... Thank you.

I think I found the solution for this point, because I have just encountered the same problem in our environment and here's what I did to solve it:

-Create a higher level permissions at the root of the folder redirection (for example \\servername\mydocredirfolder): grant the Group authenticated users the following permissions and apply it to "this folder only" ALLOW: list folders/read data, reading, reading attributes, read extended attributes, create files / add data

I think the MSI is trying to read the free space on the disk on the server, but it cannot because it tries to access the folder where your my documents redirection is sitting.

    Good luck!

    Hello

There is no free upgrade Vista to 7, 8.1, or 10.

    This information covers 7, 8.1, and 10.

Follow these steps before you install Windows 7.

Go to your computer / computer laptop manufacturer Web site and see if Windows 7 drivers are available for your make and model computer / laptop.

If this is not available, Windows 7 will not properly work for you.
