Upgrade to El Capitan and Photos

I have an iMac with OS X 10.8.5 2010.  I use iPhoto ' 09 v.8.1.2 for a library with 28 826 photos (67 GB).

I want to upgrade to El Capitan.  I bought a copy of Photos for Mac and iOS: The Missing Manual to try to prepare.

First step of the author for iPhoto to Photos to Mac migration is at level iPhoto to the latest version.  The catch-22 is that 9.6.1 has disappeared from the App Store and the author says that if you have not upgraded to iPhoto to 9.6.1 before you upgrade to OS X 10.3, iPhoto won't open at all.  My research of this forum seems to confirm that others have had the experience of not being able to update iPhoto, especially if they have never bought an iPhoto update in the App Store - I did not.

So, which seems to mean that once I go to El Capitan, I no longer able to use iPhoto.  I can make it with that, but I still need to know the best way to prepare for the upgrade to avoid problems.

27 October 2015 old Toad said to a person using an even older version of iPhoto, I am, ' you don't need to upgrade your iPhoto library, if everything you want to migrate to and use the new application Photos in El Capitan. "  It's reassuring.

I know that the first step is a backup.  And I read that iPhoto, but also trash the Finder trash must be emptied.

Is there anything else I need to do?

When I upgraded to Snow Leopard to Lion mountain in February, old Toad advised me to first rebuilding my iPhoto library.  Integrated tool of Apple made a mess and I used iPhoto Library Manager version 3.2.4.  Is there a reason that I would need to rebuild the library again?

Thank you!

It's true.  9.6.1 iPhoto is the only version compatible with El Capitan.

But you can't update iPhoto 8.1.2 to this version.  It is not a free update, but requires a purchase of iPhoto 11, and that is not possible any longer, because Apple has stopped selling iPhoto on the App Store.

It would be wise to carry out all repairs - repair permissions, library, in order to ensure the iPhoto library has no problem to repair. It must be done before you upgrade the system, because it will be impossible to run iPhoto 9.8.1 after the upgrade, if you discover problems with the library.  But make a backup copy of the library, before fix it you. This way you can easily restore the original library, if repair should go wrong.

I know that the first step is a backup.

Make a full backup - a Time machine backup or a bootable clone.  Then you can restore your system, if you should encounter any problems with El Capitan.  See: OS X El Capitan: revert to a previous version of OS X

Where your iPhoto library that Library stored?  If it's on an external drive, move it to a disc, it's to the Mac OS extended (journaled) format. Otherwise the Migration to pictures does not work.

Photos does not yet support lot changing like iPhoto.  If you need batch change titles to the date or the name of the file do while you still use iPhoto.

Complete all projects book or calendar in iPhoto, because the book and calendar templates have changed and books may be different in Photos.

    Hello nancy milano,.

Thanks for this info and choosing the communities Support from Apple. I know how important is able to complete your update to El Capitan at a later date! The good news is that you can simply delete the "install Mac OS X" install app in the Applications folder on your Mac. Then you can open the Mac App Store when you're ready to update and restart the download from the tab updates or searching through the Mac App Store for El Capitan. This is a resource that explains the process of update more:

  • Upgrade to El Capitan and Win10

    Hello

I have an iMac that has Yosemite and Windows 7. I use Parallels desktop 9. (But the windows partition is loaded through bootcamp)

I get the message that windows free 10 ends soon.

So I think upgrade to El Capitan and Windows 10.

So I had to buy Parallels 11 to use the two new operating systems. (because 9 does not work with either)

Here are the steps I take to do all three upgrades? I want to assure you that I am not missing something (steps):

    1. put on level 9 to 11 parallels

    2. upgrade to El Capitan

    3. connect via bootcamp and upgrade to Windows 7 to 10

    4. restart Windows mac and link 10 partition in parallels.

Upgrades of the OS are big and not easily reversed, so I don't want to make a mistake.

    Any help is greatly appreciated!

    Thank you

Avoid errors or problems with the updates of the first execution of a bootable backup of what you have that works. I suggest the following:

Restart the computer after the ring, press in and hold the Command and R keys until appears the Menu Utility.

    1. Select utility disk in the main menu and then press the continue button.

    2. Select the destination volume in the list on the left.

    3. click on the tab restore in the main window of disk utility.

    4. Select the destination volume in the left list and then drag it to the Destination field.

    5. Select the volume of the source of the list on the left and drag it to the Source input field.

    6. check understood you, and then click Restore.

Destination designates the external backup drive. Source means that the boot disk internal.

Regarding the Parallels just upgrade the software and verify that your Windows system still works. You cannot proceed with the upgrade of OS X. Look this first: basic steps for the OS X upgrade.

You can update Windows from Parallels. It is useless to try to boot from the installation of Boot Camp. In addition, you must first remove some components of Parallels on your Windows system to start independently.

  • Just upgraded to El Capitan and cannot access the calendar. It opens with a "Shift schedules to the server" message Can only Force Quit

Just upgraded to El Capitan and cannot access the calendar. It opens with a message 'Moving calendars to the server.

I cannot access all features and can be closed only by using force quit.

Please stop calendar and also the application of reminders, runs. Force quit if necessary.

    Back up all data.

If you synchronize some of your calendars, or reminders with iCloud, then in the iCloud preferences window, uncheck that marked calendars and reminders. You will be prompted to confirm that you want to remove your iCloud calendars and reminders of the computer. They will always be in iCloud. Re-check the boxes.

If you synchronize agendas or reminders with another network such as Google service, please open the preferences panel Internet accounts. Make a note of the settings for calendar accounts, then delete and recreate.

Launch schedule and see if there is an improvement.

  • Upgrade to El Capitan and migration of opening

I've been a user for a long time to open and I plan to spend my photos from opening in the Photos.  At the present time, I always use the opening running Yosemiti and although I read several accounts that works fine opening under El Capitan, I know at some point I need to migrate to another photo manager.  It would be better to upgrade to El Capitan before migrating my Libarary opening, or should I migrate the Aperture library, and then move on to El Capitan?  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Ed

I'd wait until after the upgrade to El Capitan. Several bug fixes of Photos have been for Yosemite, migration should be smoother on El Capitan.

I would repair the Aperture library prior to migration to ensure that there are no glitches.

  • Upgrade to El Capitan and I don't have the permission to the folders in my old user account

I've just upgraded to El Capitan on my Mac Pro computer to office from the beginning of 2008, but didn't know I needed to save my files to install for once it was done I noticed that everything had disappeared. I did some research and found these records I thought that may be the upgrade, but I am unable to access it. Are these files from the upgrade, and if so how can I get permission? If not, where are they? I saw messages mentioning the library/Systemmigration, but that looked like a lot of random other stuff other than my files. Help, please!

In the window read (second photo), click the lock and authenticate you.

    Click on the button +.

You select from the list of users and Add.

Select your username in the list of information get and you give read/write access

Click on the gear menu and select "" the owner do.

Click the gear menu again and select apply to attached.

You should now be able to access everything in this folder. If you find your documents there, I would just move from their locations in the old user folder in the new user folder.

  • I upgraded to El Capitan and some apps are missing.

MacBook Air (13 inch, mid 2011)

    MacBook Air 4,2

Intel Core i5 at 1.7 GHz

    4 GB memory

I upgraded to El Capitan (10.11.3) and now the calendar and Contact applications are missing. I was not iCloud used for backup or restore.

Before the upgrade, I was running 10.6.8. I had a Time Machine backup on an external USB drive.

I went to Time Machine to restore the applications, but they are missing in the Applications folder. Strangely, the address book more older (v9.0) and iCal (v5.0.3) apps are here. I copied them to the computer and I can run them. My contacts reappear in somehow, but not my calendars.

I had the calendar and Contacts before the backup, and they worked normally.

I can't find a way to download the latest calendar and contacts applications. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would like to reinstall OS X from your recovery disk. I do not know what effect (if any) installation of older applications will have...

  • upgrade to el capitan and all my calendars went

I upgraded to El Capitan (OS X 10.11.1), and all of my calendars are gone. There is only the holidays and birthdays (from contacts). I tried to look under view: Show and Hide, but those "show and hide" only holiday and birthday calendars. I tried to restart the computer - twice. Same situation. All of the calendars I created (there were 4 of them) have disappeared. I don't have calendars synchronized with icloud or any other device. (Or what I want.) And if the Support of Apple is reading this: Wow, this is a bug that you were aware of the month and has not set? Really bad customer relations.

I found a way to restore my calendar entries. Awkward and takes time, but I now have all my events calendar of the return. Note: I found where calendar data is stored. I was NOT able to import ics via the file > import menu. However, I found a different method.

    I went to /Library/Calendars

Each calendar file has a record of Events, that stores information on all events in the calendar, including backup copies (in old calendar files).

I looked in the most ancient calendars events folders and found ics files.

By opening one of these ics with TextWrangler files, I could see, in which case it has been (and so which calendar I should import it to-I had individual calendars "on my Mac" for personal appointments, business meetings, business purchases (annual things) and another calendar category.) With the opening of file events and showing the individual ics files, I could

Drag and drop each file ics calendar

    - and voila! This event was now in my calendar (according to the calendar of the active category, such as business meetings).
