Upgrade VMFS

Hello

We are running vSphere 4 and intend to upgrade to version 4.1. I understand that vSphere 4 use VMFS 3.33 and vSphere 4.1 VMFS is v3.46.

May I know if we're going to do a upgrade on the spot, meaning of 4.0 to 4.1 upgrade using the same material, will be the VMFS will also automatically promoted to the latest version?

Thank you.

On top of the above, have a look at the KB below:

http://KB.VMware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?cmd=displayKC&docType=kc&externalId=1005325&sliceId=1&docTypeID=DT_KB_1_1&dialogID=139995046&StateID=0%200%20139993291

It is not possible to update an existing to a later version VMFS file system. reformatting of the data store is required. However, all versions of VMFS 3 fully supported VMware ESX 3.0 and later.

Otherwise said, VMware ESX 3.0 can store and access files on a VMFS created by VMware ESX 4.1 v3.33 data store and the same host VMware ESX 4.1 also can store and access files on VMFS 3.21 volumes created by a host VMware ESX 3.0.

    Hi Pedro,

To resolve this problem, make sure is it y no-ESXi 5.x hosts (either stand-alone or connected to another server vCenter Server) has access to this data store and has virtual machines running. If Yes, then run one of the:

This host to ESXi 5.x upgrade.

vMotion VMs all access to this database of the legacy ESX host a host of ESXi 5.x.

Storage vMotion, or cold migrate virtual machines to a VMFS-3 file system.

Not present the ESXi host legacy data store. For more information, see Deleting a unit number logic containing a store of data of VMware ESXi/ESX 4.x (1029786).

After that the data store is upgraded to VMFS-5, it is no longer visible on the legacy of ESXi hosts.

  • ESXi 5.1 upgrade to ESXi 6.0 with 2 warehouses of data on the local host

Hi, I'm a little new for vsphere stuff...

I currently have a 5.1 ESXi host who I want to spend to 6.0. I did with another host with several virtual machines on which had a unique and just ran data store Installer, robbed the store of current data so it updated the system, but kept all my config and VMs in tact.

However, with this other host, its data store has been expanded at some point, and rather than extend the data store, they have created an additional.

So my question is now, if I run the Setup, what data store I point to and there are likely to be problems I might encounter?

Thank you and I look forward to hearing from someone soon

    Hello

a multiple data store or data store is no question during the upgrade or install ESXi.

I guess, you start using ESXi Server ISO.

Select storage (disk or USB/flash storage) where old ESXi is installed during the Installation (upgrade).

This allows to detect the existing ESXi installation invites you to upgrade instead of doing the new ESXi installation.

During the upgrade, select preserve existing and upgrade VMFS ' option to make sure that you keep the old virtual machines and old configuration ESXi.

  • The ESXi 4.1.0 to 6.0 upgrade. -upgarde and best practices

    Hi guys,.

We are a small business with a single physical server, ESXi 4.1.0 installed with approx. 8 VMs. We plan on buying Essential Kit 6.0 ESXi because that's all we need right now. However, as VMWare says that 4.1.0 to 6.0 upgrade is NOT supported (matrices of the interoperability of products VMware), how we improve our host and VMS?

I guess the correct way will be upgraded from 4.0. 5.5 U3 first, then to 6.0. However, if we buy the 6.0 license essential Kit, that we will be able to always download and install and upgrade of the host and all VMs to U3 5.5, and 6.0. Essentials?

In addition, what are the best practices to upgrade a single host with multiple virtual machines? What I did research, we should back up important files from virtual machine, all critical data, etc. All recommendations are welcome. My understanding is that the upgrade also virtual machines will be upgraded automatically, that's correct - methods of upgrade to ESXi 5.5 (2058352) | VMware KB

    Hello

As you said, you cannot upgrade host ESXi 4.x to 6.x, you must first upgrade 4.x to 5.x and then switch to 6.x

Before moving to 5 or 6, make sure you ESXi host is compatible with ESXi 6.

Check cheque and VMware hardware compatibility list if your server is listed.

Although you'll have a 6 ESXi license kit, you can download ESXi 5.x and use it to upgrade process.

Only if you need to use 5.x permanently, then you need to get your license keys downgraded to 5.x, otherwise once you upgrade host to 5.x, go ahead and level to ESXi 6.x

    Backup-

Before you begin the upgrade, make sure that you have backup of all VMs critics.

Either you can download/export all VMs as OVF, or you can use Veeam's free edition to make the backup of virtual machines

    -Update

You can join the server ESXi ISO Installer and boot server form ISO and update.

During the Installation process make sure to select ' PRESERVER VMFS and upgrade ESXi host '

If you do not keep vmfs, all virtual machines will get deleted during the installation/upgrade process.

Once you get ESXi Host upgrade to Upgrade VMFS 5.x version so that it can support 6.

Then finally the ESXi host to 6.x upgrade, yet once make sure PRESERVE you VMFS during installation.

If you have vCenter Update manager, use update reach the average upgrade easy it is to upgrade.

  • Refresh your VMFS 5.54 to 5.61

    Hello

We have just improved vsphere 5.1 to 6.0.  We would upgrade VMFS 5.54 to 5.61 with the least impact.

What is VMware's best practices for that?

    Kind regards

    Frédéric

Unfortunately, there are no real way to 'upgrade' to do this. You will need to evacuate all virtual machines from the data store (use storage vMotion), remove the data store and then re-create a new data store to a 6.0 on the LUN host. It is the only way to facilitate a VMFS "minor update".

  • Identification of the LUN VMFS5 native and upgrade

Is there a way to determine what VMFS LUNS are native VMFS5 and who are upgraded from a previous version?

I see 2 possibilities to determine if a volume has been set to level or the native format with VMFS5.

First of all, check the size of block VMFS. If you see a greater than 1 MB for VMFS5 block size, you know instantly that the volume has been upgraded. You can use the regular vSphere Client GUI to check your data store or use this snippet of powercli to list all your data warehouses and their VMFS version:

    Get-Datastore. %{(Get-vue $_). Info.Vmfs | Select name, BlocksizeMb, Version}

    Name                                                                                                     BlockSizeMb Version
    ----                                                                                                     ----------- -------
    UPGRADED_VMFS5                                                                                                 8 5.54
    OLD_VMFS3                                                                                                            8 3.46
    PROBABLY_NATIVE_VMFS5 1 5.54

Of course, that does not know whether or not a block of 1 MB VMFS3 has been upgraded.

The 2nd way is to check if the disk device using a GPT instead of MBR partition table. Volumes upgraded keep MBR while the new ones are created with TPG. However, there is a corner-script: a volume VMFS3 upgrade will also change GPT if you extend the VMFS beyond 2 TB after the upgrade. This behavior is described here:

    http://blogs.VMware.com/vSphere/2011/12/upgraded-VMFS-5-automatic-partition-format-change.html

    http://KB.VMware.com/kb/2003813

If you do not have more than 2 TB LUN or you never know extended volumes like this, this should be a surefire way to tell from the shell ESXi:

~ # partedUtil getptbl [disc device path]
    ~ # partedUtil getptbl /vmfs/devices/disks/naa.600508b40010439a0000b00000360000
    TPG
    19581 255 63 314572800
    1 128 314568764 AA31E02A400F11DB9590000C2911D1B8 vmfs 0

The following code snippet will work against all volumes active VMFS on the host running on:

    ~ # esxcfg - scsidevs - m | awk (' print $1' "). SED EI s/\:1 / /' | any reading device; echo-e "\n$device"; partedUtil getptbl/vmfs/devices/disks / $ device; fact;

  • migrate the production esx 4.0 to 5 new hardware esxi environment

I intend to migrate my production esx4.0 vSphere esxi 5 environment (new hardware) environment. How can I migrate my vms to production that are hosted on esx 4.0 (3 hosts managed by vcenter) to new material, that is to say 3 new hosts running esxi5? I want to leave my production environment intact in case I need to back off because of problems if it is possible? I am aware that:

    «My upgrade VMFS-5 doesn't have a block size of 1 MB.» Why?

Upgrade of VMFS-5 partitions retain the characteristics of the partition of the data store VMFS-3 original, including the block size of the file, size of 64 K subblock, etc.. To take full advantage of all the benefits of VMFS-5, migrate virtual machines to a different data store (s), delete the existing one and re data store - create using VMFS-5".
so ideally, I want to create a new data store instead of to upgrade and move my VM prod on this.

What are the options that are available to me? Thank you.

I wonder if it would make a big difference to save storage space?

30 years ago I probably would have said it makes a difference, but today, it is probably more expensive (i.e. is not worth spending time) to create a new data store and migrate everything to a few KB.

  • Migrate vsphere vSphere 4 5

I'm looking for information on how to migrate from 4.0.0 to vSphere vSphere 5.  There seems to be a lot of information for the upgrade from 4.1 to 5.  First of all can I upgrade to 4.1?  I currently have an environment with 7 servers ESX 4.0 in two groups.  These servers are all replaced with new hardware and I want to migrate all my virtual machines to new ESXi 5 servers.  Please point me to documentation that I can't find anything.

These servers are all replaced with new hardware and I want to migrate all my virtual machines to new ESXi 5 servers.

According to my understanding, you need to upgrade ESX and material. If my hypothesis is correct, then go for the new installation of ESXi5.

Where the virtual machines in 4.0? If its SAN/NAS data warehouses to perform the following operations.

1 install ESXi 5 on new hosts and mount shared data warehouses.

    2. turn to vCenter Server 4.0 to 5.0 level

    3. Add new hosts to vCenter Server.

    4. the virtual machines to the new hosts of the 4.0 hosts vMotion.

    5. upgrade VMware tools.

    6. switch to virtual machine hardware level.

    7 upgrade VMFS if necessary.

  • VMFS2 or VMFS3 - how to tell?

    All,

I inherited a VMS environment that has servers to 1.5, 2.5, 3.0 and 3.5 ESX and trying to get my arms around how bring back to 3.5. U3.  Some of the virtual machines residing on SAN FC, and others are on the local disks.  I see that the upgrade sequence is: VC, host Datastore (VMFS2 to VMFS3), VM, then Tools.

My questions are: how will I know if the filesystem is VMFS2 or VMFS3?  Command line?  Are there different versions of VMFS3 (i.e. making changes to the host have no impact on the data store)?  Also, any big pitfalls to watch out for?

    Thanks for your comments!

  • vSphere upgrade: VM tools/hw and VMFS

    Hi all

Just have a quick question (I hope).  We went through the process of upgrading our servers of Mgmt (vcenter, update of crèche, SRM) 5.1.  We have also already updated all our ESX host to 5.1.  We are upgrading an environment of 4.1.

My question is if there is any order (favorite or otherwise) when the upgrade of the vm (Tools/hw) and VMFS?  All our warehouses are VMFS3.

I thought before that VMFS was the next step in the upgrade, but after reviewing the documentation below, looks like they're completely independent and no matter in what order they're done.   (I realize that when we realize the vmtools/hw upgrade, we improve vmtools first, then the hardware vm.)

Our plan for the upgrade of VMFS had to use storage vmotion and roll through all data warehouses by disabling out them, given in form from scratch and before proceeding to the next.

    Thank you...

Just a little tip: ALWAYS update your first management servers (and not the reverse).

VMtools and VMFS are totally indepednent.  You can do them in any order, and they in fact are not necessary at all.

No, it uses the same version of VMFS. Your guests are kept. When the server is upgraded, you must update VMWare, and virtual hardware tools.
