Upgrading VirtualCenter

I'm about to install Virtual Center 2.5 update 6 of Virtual Center 2.5 Update 2 and I was wondering if anyone knew whether a database upgrade.  I read the upgrade guide, but apparently not to focus (or forget, by the way) on the minor updates.

Yes, there is a schema for U6 upgrade.  So, make sure that you get a full backup of your DB instance before you begin.

I have a few questions about a possible upgrade of VirtualCenter and how to upgrade my specific version does not appear in the upgrade guide.

The VirtualCenter server running 2.5.0 build 104215

The hosts run ESXi (embedded) 120505 version 2.5.0

The VirtualCenter database is running on Microsoft SQL Server 2005

The VirtualCenter and SQL Server are run as virtual machines

ESXi hosts using a shared on a SAN storage and helped HA/DRS

The infrastructure is not yet in use of production and the plan is to move to vCenter Update3 and even update for Update3 ESXi hosts (no less, we can solve the Maintenance mode causing HA suspended the issue of 2%)

    My questions:

    (1) is the database needs to be upgraded?

    (2) is the data store must be upgraded?

    (3) will be the VC/SQL servers running in the cause of the problems VI?

    (4) it is interesting to use snapshots to roll back problems?

Questions 1 to 3, the answer is no--for question 4, you can, but don't let them run long before committing them - this might help as well http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vi3_35/esx_3/r35u2/vi3_35_25_u2_upgrade_guide.pdf

  • Upgrade plan of ESX2.5 of VI3.5

    Hello everyone,

I am currently considering an upgrade of our current environment of the 2.53/2.54 of VI 3.5 (... with a possible move to 4.0..).  I know... "always to 2.53 help?" never enough time for projects.  Currently, we have (3) hosts ProLiant DL380G4s and DL585G1 (1) ProLiant host bound to a 3000 EVA.  I have four ProLiant DL380G5s available for a new installation of 3.5 and recently bought Equallogic iSCSI SAN to replace EVA.

I intend now upgrading VirtualCenter (... moving to a new hardware..) and I'm not too concerned with the installation of 3.5, since it is new material.  My concern is with the migration of VM.  My original plan, pre-Equallogic, had to bring up one of the new ProLiants on the EVA (..) I have a CF card game..) with the new LUN presented and migrate VMS off one of former guests.  I then continue the migration by pulling down the old empty host and using CF cards for another new host, and so forth until all virtual machines have been migrated and all former hosts were declining.  However, given that I now have the Equallogics and want to switch everything to them, I wonder what is the best plan.  Should I go with what I had originally planned, and then tying the new hosts the EQS and migrate virtual machines to the new iSCSI LUN or even bother with the connection of the new guests to the EVA and just try to migrate from the old EVA-attached to EQ-attached hosts to new hosts?

Recommendations or traps to monitor are appreciated!

Installing vCenter 2.5 on the new server and new database if you are not concerned about keeping all the data and the previous VirtualCenter configuration

Install new ESX 3.5 hosts in the new vCenter

Fix EqualLogic hosts and create data warehouses

Configure the VMotion to be compatible with the old host ESX 2.x

Disconnect the old VC and the new CR ESX host

Upgrade VMotion VMs of former hosts of new guests and new data warehouses

All VM do the latest version of virtual hardware and VMware Tools

Decommissioning the old servers and storage

  • 3.0.2 upgrade to 3.5

I'm looking to upgrade to ESX 3.5 and from what I've read, this is the procedure that I follow:

    1. backup the database of Virtual Center.

    2. upgrade VirtualCenter 2.0.x to VirtualCenter 2.5.

    3. switch to level the VirtualCenter database.

    4. use VMotion to evacuate the virtual machines from the host ESX Server 3.0.x.

5 file systems emergency ESX service console

6 put the ESX 3.0.x to ESX Server 3.5 server level.

7 use VMotion to bring back the host ESX Server virtual machines.

    8. upgrade VMware Tools to VMware Tools 3.5 3.0.

    9. Repeat steps 4 through step 8 for each ESX Server host.

Then of course management doesn't let me update all 4 hosts that we have both. They want just 1 is host and then wait 4 weeks to make sure that everything is fine. HA and DRS is enabled for these 4 hosts and I have some questions tha I was not able to find answers to yet.

    1. can coexist us with 3.0.X and 3.5 safely for a few weeks after the VirtualCenter upgrade and a crowd?

    2. How could we go back to VirtualCenter 2.0 if we have problems?

    3. what patches need to be installed prior to upgrading? I ask this question because we are several patches behind. Do I need to worry about getting the current host to day? Or 3.5 upgrade will take care of that? Or should I not bother with an upgrade and do a clean install of 3.5? (Sorry this one had several questions in there.)

    Thanks much for any info!

    Hi Man,

It's the checklist that you have to follow as you HA, VMotion and DRS configured:

    *

    To perform the upgrade

    *

    1 - update VirtualCenter 2.0.x to VirtualCenter 2.5.

2 - upgrade the VirtualCenter database.

    3. place the ESX Server host in maintenance mode.

    4. wait for the software drains all the VMS ESX Server host computer.

5 - upgrade the host ESX Server 3.0.2 for ESX Server 3.5.

6 - Add the ESX Server upgraded to the DRS cluster.

7 - Repeat step 3 through step 6 for each ESX Server host.

one-topic of your question, as far as I am in VMware ESX technology, you can use the version 3.0.X and 3.5 version at the same time.

b on the way in which you want to revert to the previous version, if something goes wrong: I don't really believe. So, don't forget your plan before you try to do something.

    See you soon

  • New server vCenter4

We currently have VirtualCenter2.5 on a physical server.   We will begin our upgrade to vSphere4.  The first step is to upgrade or install vCenter4.   However, our servers are all on the lease and the VirtualCenter server is off lease.  We receive a new server and I decided well enough just to install a new copy of vCenter on that instead you re-create the server VirtualCenter2.5 and upgrade.

Let's save our VirtualCenter database as well as the license server file.

Because we have the VirtualCenter2.5 server and our server replacement for a few days, my thought is to install vCenter on the new server, attach the file to the database and the license server.  Then, I think I need to recreate my environment again on the vCenter server to include presenting CF LUN again.  is that correct?  Or is there a better way to do it?

you won't lose any of your features.  Don't forget the features are based on licenses.  I guess that you only had / have business license with VI3, licensing will be the same in vSphere4.

With regard to your DBA, tell them just to make a backup of the complete BD and you will call them, if you need their help

P.S. see this snipit of vSphere Upgrade Guide

    On the upgrade database Wizard

The upgrade database Wizard updates the schema of the VirtualCenter database. The upgrade of database

run the Wizard after completing installation of vCenter Server Wizard.

When you perform an upgrade to vCenter Server, you must use a VirtualCenter 2.x database that is supported

    upgrade by vCenter Server 4.0.

The upgrade database wizard runs once you click on install in the setup of the vCenter server. The database

Assistant upgrade upgrades the database schema to make it compatible with vCenter Server 4.0. The schema

defines the tables, the fields in each table, and the relationships between the tables and fields.

If you upgrade VirtualCenter 2.5, the database upgrade wizard runs in the background. If you are

upgrading from VirtualCenter 2.0.x the upgrade database wizard appears, and you must complete the wizard.

The upgrade database Wizard does not level a version not supported in database (for example, Oracle 9i)

in a database that is taken in charge.

After you install the vSphere Client, the corresponding data fields are empty.

Is it possible to get them without having to re-enter it and do the confirmatory test?

These parameters are new in vSphere.

I didn't see in version 3.5 (supporting only recovery mode WOL).

  • How upgrade ESXi 3.5 U3 to ESXi 3.5 U4 without VirtualCenter?

The upgrade guide published by VMware is 100 pages and seems to assume you have VirtualCenter. How ESXi improved, U4 without the use of VirtualCenter?

    Nick,

I understand your frustration. VMware tends to complicate things a bit, but once you learn to read and (lots of reading) you'll have as its all not so bad. But without going to the topic far, VMware provides everything you need to update your server ESXi/servers very easily. The method that Tony posted above is the way to do it and is fully supported IS the SAME method that I recommended. I have almost 200 guests that I update with the infrastructure update utility. When you install the VI Client on your machine from management, it asks you if you want to install the Update Manager Service, you MUST place a check box this box for the installed application. If you do not have it, re - install your infrastructure client and make sure that you have selected him. When you do, run the app, select the server from your list that you want to update, it checks for updates and if you want, appkly them. You must reboot the host AFTER updates are applied, but after hours. The walk through above is entirely correct.

I hope this explains more, but you should have installed program, which is installed when you install the client infrastructure.

  • upgrade from ESX 2.5.2 VirtualCenter 1.3 to ESX 3.5 and VirtualCenter 2.5

What you call experts! I have 3 new ESX 3.5 servers and a new configuration of Lefthand SAN.  I have 3 old 2.5.2 running in VC 1.3 ESX host.  I need to upgrade to 2.5 VC.  It is better to simply create a new VC Server?  I also get all the VMs on ESX 2.5.2 new environmental VMFS2 servers.  What is the best way to do it?  2.5.2 VMotion Server server 3.5 upgrade virtual hardware then VMtools?  For that I must add the 2.5.2 VC 2.5 Server servers can add 2.5.2 servers in a new VC 2.5 with my ESX 3.5 hosts?  I'm looking for minimum downtime.  I have only 20 virtual machines.  So, to summarize what is my best upgrade/migration path?   I understand that I can not upgrade my virtual server from 1.3 to 2.5 in place and it seems to be the best just create a new one?

Thanks to all of you who take the time to help me with this.

Virtual center of Setup program on a new virtual machine in the new environment.

Present records ESX 2.5 to the new 3.5 servers. As they are VMFS2 they will be displayed read-only for guests of 3.5.

For each virtual machine that you want to migrate, you create a new virtual machine in version 3.5 but are not all discs.

Stop the vm 2.5. SSH into your 3.5 host and copy the diskfiles 2.5 LUN on a LUN that belongs to your 3.5 environment.

    vmkfstools-i /vmfs/volumes/old_LUN/examplevm/examplevm.vmdk/vmfs/volumes/new_LUN/examplevm/examplevm.vmdk

The disc is now copied to the new location and you must change the vmdk file.

    VI /vmfs/volumes/new_LUN/examplevm/examplevm.vmdk

change of buslogic to free and save. You will now be able to set the drive on the virtual machine that you created with you customer VI.

After disc is attached right clik on the virtual machine and choose upgrade virtual hardware. Turn on the virtual machine, save your ipconfig and upgrading vmware tools restart and set the IP.

    1. Turn a Windows R2 VM 2012
    2. VCenter Server 6 to install and configure

    4. If set to true, above and then use the Update Manager to upgrade 5.5U3 to 6.0U1 hosts?

On step #3, you will need to create all the news on the new VirtualCenter and then move the new hosts of the former vCenter, have a look here for detailed instructions on how to make this gesture: VMware KB: move a managed ESX ESXi host to a vCenter Server to a different Server vCenter

And once with hosts on the new VirtualCenter, you can use Update Manager to upgrade to version 6 Update 1 or install from scratch.

Replace the certificate turned out to be a little more work than expected. I created a new certificate (signed by our internal CA) with subjectAltName DNS =(vcenter fqdn) and = (vcenter ip) IP. According to the documentation for VMware, we only need a few commands to obtain these certificates installed, but nevermind:

    / usr/sbin/vpxd_servicecfg change chain.pem rui.key certificate

has failed with error VC_CFG_RESULT = 650 code ("vCenter Server is unable to re-encrypt its various configuration settings", see http://kb.vmware.com/kb/2057248). I also replaced the certificate of service inventory according to the documentation, but the vmware-vpxd service would not start again. The /var/log/vmware/vpx/vpxd.log file has an explanation:

[- info "utilvpxdVdb"] [VpxdVdb::SetDBType] DSN connection: VMware VirtualCenter with vc username

[- error "commonvpxCrypt"] [VpxKey::Decrypt] broken crypto: error: 0407109F:rsa routines: RSA_padding_check_PKCS1_type_2:pkcs decoding error

[- error "Default"] Error obtaining configuration information from the database

[- error "vpxdvpxdMain"] [Init] Init failed: VpxdVdb::Init (VpxdVdb::GetVcVdbInstId (), false, false, NULL)

In other words, the database password cannot be read. Since the VCSA, the password is available in clear of /etc/vmware-vpx/vcdb.properties we can just run vpxd Pei to encrypt the password again in the vpxd configuration file. This does not solve the problem with vpxd immediately although:

[- info "utilvpxdVdb"] [VpxdVdb::SetDBType] DSN connection: VMware VirtualCenter with vc username

[- info "Default"] [VdbSchemaLoader::LookupSchemaFromDB] Schema information and responsible for DB index

Now the problem is with the LDAP (SSO) password. We will re-encrypt that hand as well. Start by getting the SSO return of decryption password using the old key:

    grep "^ mot_passe =' /etc/vmware-vpx/instance.cfg.certChange |" Cup-c 9 - | TR-d '-' | Base64 d | Python-c "import sys".

    data = sys.stdin.read)

    data_len = len (data)

    I'm in range (data_len):

    sys.stdout.Write(Data[data_len-i-1])

    " | OpenSSL rsautl-/ssl/old.key inkey - pkcs - decrypt

Then re - encrypt the password with the new key:

    echo - n decrypted word of past | OpenSSL rsautl-/etc/vmware-vpx/ssl/rui.key inkey - pkcs - encrypt | Python-c "import sys".

    data = sys.stdin.read)

    data_len = len (data)

    I'm in range (data_len):

    sys.stdout.Write(Data[data_len-i-1])

    " | Base64-w0 | SED / = / \ / g ='

We put this value encrypted as mot_passe = in the configuration etc/vmware-vpx/instance.cfg file.

Today, vmware-vpxd will start correctly (I rebooted just to be sure) and the VCSA Upgrade Wizard migrated from the instance, including the complete inventory, without problems. Now all that remains is to find How to install customized VCSA 6.0 SSL certificates.
