Use a clipping for this mask? I am that approaching the wrong way?

Greetings and Salutations!

I am trying to create some jerseys cycling for my friends and I. Im relatively new to Illustrator, so I created my "Proof" in Photoshop.

That's what it is supposed to look like.

Now that evidence has got a helping hand up, I need this vectorize and get ready for printing.

Although I ran into a small issue. Im not sure exactly how I should do to correct this.

I went to bed the contour of the Lion

I then created a layer of 'fill' with an opacity of 50%

Together, they form the feline version of Voltron

Now I need to insert the yellow Lion. So I duplicate the layers and change from light blue to yellow, and this happens because of the opacity of the layer of "filling".

You can see the lion yellow in behind the blue lion! I expected since the fill to 50% layer!

I don't know how to fix this. I thought I'd do a clipping for #2 Lion mask

But wasn't sure if that's what I had to do. Can someone give me advice?

I feel like I'm playing with the unknown technology and ive accidentally created a monster! Halp before he wins the consciousness!

Add a white shape behind black design.
