Using a hotkey multiple times

I followed the instructions posted at

http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows-8/Create-keyboard-shortcuts-to-open-apps

and have created shortcuts keyboard.  They work, but apparently they can't be used more than once... that is, once a shortcut opens its app, while this app is open a second instance cannot be opened simultaneously via the keyboard shortcut.  How do I overcome this limitation so that I can use a shortcut repeatedly and have multiple instances of the application open at the same time?

Hey dapike, I know a way to do this, but it would require the taskbar shortcuts.

  • On Windows 7 and above all, Eevery taskbar button can be invoked with the Windows Logo button on the keyboard. +1 would choose the first button on the taskbar, +2 next, and so on up to ten items. I use myself to start the screen clipping tool with +2. So if I use a new computer without this, I've been frustrated because my work includes many screenshots.
  • You can combine this with standard shortcuts, you can already use in your browser: Ctrl + click on a link opens in a new tab, and shift + click on a link opens in a new window.  These shortcuts work with shortcuts to the taskbar.  With a mouse, it's still a click, but it also works with the keyboard controls.  So if I want to open the calculator, I press +1.  If I want to open a new Calculator (as opposed to one that is already there), I would support on +SHIFT +1.

If you have several already running, +Ctrl+1 would switch between them (similar to the opening of several tabs or Excel files and press Ctrl + Tab.)

So in summary:

  1. Put your shortcut on the taskbar in the position you want the shortcut number.
  2. Use +Ctrl+number to launch a new instance (or just +number) to switch to it.
