  My advice make a library of portable split is a general guide, but as such, it has all sorts of details that you may not need.

  I guess you have previously installed iTunes such as library files were in the usual place of C:\Users\ < user > \Music\iTunes but the media were on an external drive, for example in X:\ < Media folder >, and no longer have access to the old library, or are perhaps new to iTunes, then so be it you will need to start over again. If, then hold down the SHIFT key when you launch iTunes. Keep now until you see a prompt to create or choose a library. Click on create and make a new library at the root of the external drive, i.e. as X:\iTunes , where X is the drive letter of the external drive.   Independent of how this feature works, you want to have your photos in one place and have a backup (second copy) somewhere else. All hard drives will not be successful at some point - some more early, some late - never trust to have your files in any safety devices if they are on a single disc.   If the drive supports USB 2.0, then're you good to go.  If you need to save a file that is greater than 2 GB, then you can benefit with eSATA if taken in charge by your PC.  If you have up to 500 MB of data, then USB 2.0 would be an acceptable compromise.  Remember that the speed of transfer of files more small piles is much slower than a large file.  That's why I like to put important data in a partition logic extendend separate on the same hard drive and use an imaging program to back up this partition on CD, DVD, or another hard drive.  The result is a compressed image unique record about 1/2 the size of the source partition.

  If your hard drive has enough free disk space, you can install a newer version of Windows on a separate partition and keep the earlier version of Windows on your computer. It's called a multiboot or dual-boot configuration. Every time that you start your computer, you can choose which version of Windows to run. You can also install Windows 8 on an external hard drive and use it to dual boot.

  I suggest you to assign a drive letter for the external hard drive and see if it helps.

  To do:

  a. press the Windows key + R and type diskmgmt.msc.

  (b) if the hard drive recognized in disk management and if there is no drive letter assigned, I suggest you do a right click on the drive and assign a drive letter and check if it helps.

  c. right click paths and the drive letter Change.

  Do one of the following:

  Your post shows your PC than the execution of win10, but it comes preinstalled with Win8x.  This means that at some point, you've done setting at Win10 level, and unfortunately, that corrupts the information of HP recovery: HP Recovery Manager blocked after Windows 10 Upgrade - HP Support Forum's - 5170752

  Once you do this upgrade, the ONLY way to perform a recovery after that use HP recovery media.

  Ordinarily, I advise to use HP recovery media to restore your PC to its original state. That would erase the entire disk, format the drive and install the operating system, drivers and utilities HP.

  This problem has been resolved in collaboration with support of higher HP for Z book 17 mobile workstation.

  Steps:

  (1) determines that it is not NTFS problem

  (2) using the MSCONFIG the problem has been isolated to a single service

  When this service has been disabled and after reboot, the problem of access to the files is resolved.

  Results: HP had installed software on the HP Z book 17 laptop or mobile workstation which, by default, block communication with external hard drives and flash drives external.

  This HP Client Security software replaces or blocks all right click changes settings become apparent.  It blocks the change of ownership.  It blocks the administrator privileges.  It blocks all is used.
