Using VCenter server NTP ok?

We have two hosts, each running 2 VMs Windows 2008. For security reasons, the hosts are on a separate VLAN management that does not have internet access. I advanced and configure NTP on the domain controller VM, for all virtual machines have the correct time. But I really wish that guests have time just too so that timestamps in the newspapers are relevant. I have install the VCenter server (Win2008) to act as an NTP server, and I tested it with my laptop. This works. I told guests to get their time from the VCenter server, because it is the only machine that accesses to the guest VLAN.

My question - is this a good practice? It seems that everyone gives their guests internet access, but it's just another door that you have to keep in my humble OPINION.

I forgot to add - the VCenter is the installer has a NTP client to get his time on the internet.

If you have setup the vCenter correctly in the NTP server (you have done - you have tested) I don't see a problem with that. Most people use either:

  • Public NTP servers, which can work very well, when managed / firewall
  • Internal NTP servers
  • Dedicated time devices

So, no, I don't see a problem here, and if it works for you, it is a good practice. It's also nice to see that you think safety (by not giving guests direct access to a public NTP server) in production environments (?).

  • How start/use vCenter Server?

Hi guys, first I want to apologize to post an easy question to most of you, but it seems that could not answer this question with most of our staff here. For starters, I installed a vCenter Server 4.0 on a Windows XP Pro 32 Bit. The installation goes smoothly using the default SQL database that provides VMware. However after you have installed the server vCenter, we could not find anywhere! We tried to find it in all programs & gt; & gt; VMware & gt; & gt; & lt; And nothing! & gt;! If I'm not mistaken there must be an executable file as the vSphere Client shortcut located in the same directory?

So far, we have concluded that the vCenter Server is installed in the computer as we gazed at the Add/Remove program list and found the vCenter Server installed! We also enabled vCenter Server Services but still nothing. We find the vCenter Server in the wrong direction or we should access the vCenter Server via a web browser? Any solutions would be appreciated.

UH thanks for your reply but I'm abit still confuse as I just want to know how to start the vCenter Server?

The method is similar to the start of the vSphere client whereby you just double click the shortcut icon?

vCenter runs like a bouquet of services. The installation created these services, to 'autostart' and began to their. Because they are defined in the autostart, they become active whenever the system is booted.

I have already installed the server vCenter Server if the host of the vCenter server would be the same IP as the server ESXi?

No, of course not. vCenter runs on a separate host Windows. The vCenter server IP address must be unique within the subnet IP used as each host must have a unique IP address.

Even once, the vClient dowhnload, beginning as you start Word (or Openoffice), enter hostr of the vCenter server's NetBIOS name or its IP address as the destination to connect to and a combination of DOMAIN\username of a user who belongs to the vCenter server's local administrator group.

  • Manage an ESXi host using vCenter Server?

I understand it is possible and requires of the specific licenses for ESXi hosts, even if I find information on the VMWare site a bit confused as to what I need exactly. We have-

    1 License Server Standard 4 x vCenter

4 x vSphere Enterprise license 4 (who manage our ESX 4 hosts this site)

3 (and soon 4) remote sites that have the same server ESXi

I would like to be able to manage ESXi host using vCenter as well, is this possible with what we have? If this isn't the case, can someone direct me as to what it takes?

    Thank you

You need the standard by CPU socket for each host license to add to vCenter.

You can always create a separate environment and get the Essentials Bundle (up to 3 guests max) for $500:

    http://store.VMware.com/servlet/ControllerServlet?Action=displayPage&env=base&locale=en_US&siteid=VMware&ID=ProductDetailsPage&ProductID=126843700&RESID=psfyPAoBAlkAACQ2y-kAAAAX&rests=1277824287882

So you should have 2 vCenter servers.

  • Backup of VM best practices using vCenter Server

    Hi all

I currently plan to backup my virtual machine in VMWare ESXi 4, I have

installed the trial vCenter Server 4.0 administration server.

My 2 x ESXi 4 server connected to a San and sharing a single LUN so

in this case, I would like to create another LUN in the SAN to

Hold the Backed up SAN. (see attachment)

and I'm still not sure about which license should I get for this question? between essential or Foundation

My goal is to be able to do:

1 backup and restore using VCB

    2. ease of management of VM creation and the cloned VM management, models and migration (moving between SAN and SATA Local data store) offline.

HA and VMotion is not important at the moment.

any suggestions and comments will be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you

    Kind regards

There is no way to "upgrade to ESX ESXi" without a complete reinstallation of the product.  If you really want instead of ESXi ESX, you should be able to just install ESX, ESXi over and tell him to keep all existing partitions intact VMFS.  You will lose all your settings (vSwitches, etc.), but you shouldn't lose all virtual machines.  In fact if the ESX host is SAN attached so you can just blow everything about ESXi installation and install ESX and reattach the VMFS LUNS to the new ESX host.  You shouldn't lose anything it. Make sure that the ESX host is not attached to the SAN when installing ESX (unplug the cable) than who has been known to cause problems.

You will get no reduction in functionality if you stay with ESXi.  Once an appropriate license, ESX and ESXi work exactly the same.  The main differences lie in the way you manage servers with the absence of a Service Console on ESXi.  Given that VMware intends to get rid of the Service Console completely in future versions, it might be logical just to go in that direction now and stay with ESXi.

  • Can of POS used with Vmware vCenter Server 5 Standard license

    Hello team,

    Accroding to http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US & cmd = displayKC & externalId = 2016565

WTP is supplied with vSphere Essentials more and more.

I searched but did not meet solid information where he explains when licensed some don't need us to buy additional licenses for new features / applications, etc.
I'm new to Vmware licenses hierarchy. We have Vmware vCenter Server Standard 5 license.
Please point me to a URL that contains the hierarchy of Vmware licenses .

    Thank you much in advance.
    Niraj

You can use vCenter Server Standard 5 licenses for POS. Everything we have features such as (profile of HA, DRS, FT, VDP, host, DVS etc.) you don't need to worry about the virtual server license Center. You must use the correct license vsphere host. But don't forget to think about some virtual server edition Center can handle some vsphere hosts.

vCenter server 5 Essentials can manage only vSphere Essentials Plus or vSphere Essentials.

vCenter Server Standard 5 licensecan eat only vSphere vSphere Enterprise and vSphere companies plus standards.

You can activate the functionality of POS with vSphere Essentials Plus then you will need to use vCenter server 5 Essentials. If you use vCenter server standard for vSphere Essentials Plus so it give error or warning for violation of editing.

It is a known issue, relating to the collection of historical data being enabled (nonzero) in the properties of the VMWare Agent on the Agent status screen.

Change to 0 to disable/re-enable the agent and it should fix the problem.

    Hi all

I really need help here.  I have a new installation of Esxi5.5 and installed the server vcenter build 5.5.0.5201 device 1476389.

I have host files properly configured for DNS and Server 2008 R2 running that I use to connect with the client or web client heavy.

Initially, I get an error with the web client to connect, he began to paint Vmware and when it comes to 'r' in the name it fails with #2032, so I can no longer

heavy client vSphere fails at this time as well.  However, I cannot communicate directly with Vsphere client to server esxi host and it works all the time.

There seems to be a problem with the device of vcenter server because the thick client fails, and does not open a backup program using vcenter server

    inventory when this happened.

Please help, it drives me crazy...

    Hello

Since I found the solution to the problem of connecting to the device of vcenter.  It is a conflict of IP address on the network.  There was a machine with the same IP address virtuall

as the vcenter server.  This caused intermittent problems etc.. Why web client would still work if I have the vmware client open I do not know

so thank you for your help.

  • vCenter Server 4 as virtual machine by vSphere, ESX4 host

    Hello

I would like to ask if anyone has tried to do.

I create a virtual machine to run my vCenter Server 4 under a new brand, vSphere, ESX4, armed with other VM.

My question is, can I use vCenter Server 4 and the same vSphere, ESX4 host where the vCenter Server 4 is be managed host?  Is this possible.

I did this, but in the ESX and vcenter 4 installation guide his page 16 of the document makes it clear that: "the vCenter Server system is a physical machine or the virtual machine with access to a database taken in charge. The vCenter Server system must meet specific requirements. Also, make sure that the vSphere Client machines meet the hardware requirements. »

Here is the link to the document: http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vsphere4/r40/vsp_40_esx_vc_installation_guide.pdf

But if you plan to do that you have to ensure three points (shown in this link: http://www.vladan.fr/three-main-reasons-to-run-virtual-center-server-as-a-virtual-machine/):

    1. Disable DRS (level of automation of change!) for your VirtualCenter VM and make sure the document where the VirtualCenter Server (my suggestion would be the first area of ESX)

    2. Enable HA for the VirtualCenter server and set the boot at high priority

    3. Make sure the VirtualCenter server gets sufficient resources by defining actions

There is also another useful post that describes the advantages of the virtual centre running as a virtual machine:

  • Remove the server vCenter Server in the cluster

I wanted to move my server vCenter to another machine.  When I installed on machine 2, he asked if it was a stand alone or make part of a cluster (? not sure if he said cluster but that's essentially).  I chose the cluster.  I moved my machines from the old server to the new server and then uninstalled the old server vCenter.  Now, when I open the vi for the new vCenter Server client, it tells me that the old server cannot be contacted.

  • vCenter Server (version 4) pricing and license

    Hello

I am preparing a quote for two vSphere ESX v4 and a vCenter server.

We need to VMotion and Drs So I think we need at least Enterprise edition (or higher) on the ESX section.

As for vCenter, I was wondering if I can use vCenter Server for Essentials ($995) bundle, or do I have to get vCenter Server Foundation ($1495)?

If I go with Essentials, I get the standard edition of ESX and vCenter Server at a lower cost than vCenter Server Foundation.  Allows to manage vCenter in Essentials Enterprise edition ESX?

Opportunities for savings are welcome.  Thank you.

    Kong

    Kong Hi!

1 vCenter Essentials server cannot do VMotion or DRS.

    Yes.

2 vCenter Foundation can do VMotion and DRS (the difference between the Foundation and regular is the limitation of 3 ESX host).

    Yes.

    3. If the 3rd ESX is necessary on the road, is "accélération Kit" might be cheaper.

There is no Enterprise Acceleration Kit, only Enterprise Plus, compare quotes for EntPlus Kit vs 3 Ent + vCenter

  • Can I use the same NTP server configured in the firewall to guard

I configured the NTP server in my VCSC Expressway it synchronized correctly, but I'm unable to configured in my VCSC Gatekeeper with the same NTP server address that is configured in VCScExpresway.

    Please suggest

    Hello!

You use in.pool.ntp.org. This isn't a single ntp server, there is a pool of servers,

then you might see different ntp servers, and they can also change and sometimes

It can also happen that yo will get a limit down.

If I get him here, I have for exmple get:

    $host in.pool.ntp.org

    in.pool.ntp.org has address 113.30.137.34

    in.pool.ntp.org has address 119.226.101.131

and a little later, I got:

    $ host in.pool.ntp.org

    in.pool.ntp.org has address 123.108.225.6

    in.pool.ntp.org has address 125.62.193.121

In any case you want to configure multiple NTP server addresses.

So, if you want to use this area (India):

    * You must configure these three host names as described here: http://www.pool.ntp.org/zone/in

    * See who works for DNS resolution (which may also be the problem here)

    * you have a suitable internet access

    * see that the firewall is open to 123 to any host on the internet

    * If you are not in India use a different area

On the VCS under Maintanance > tools > utilities you could for example check if you can resolve DNS and traceroute/ping external hosts on network.

The other option is to find at least 2 NTP servers you know and that you can use and set up.

then you could lock the specific IPS in the firewall, otherwise it should be open to all.

Its also not hard to set up your own server NTP, incidentally.

  • Impossible to connect to vCenter Server 5.5 using the vSphere Client

    Hello

I'm trying to configure VMware Lab home using the link below and I have reached a stage where I need to connect to vCenter Server using the vSphere client.

    http://boerlowie.WordPress.com/2011/12/13/building-the-ultimate-vSphere-lab-part-9-ESXi/

I installed the package of 5.5 full vCenter server using the simple installation option and it includes vCenter server, single sign - on, Webclient vSphere, vCenter server and vCenter Server inventory service. All the the latter is installed on a virtual machine that is running Windows server 2008 R2 guest OS.

Whenever I try to open a session on the vCenter Server uses the vSphere client, one of the following error is displayed.

    1. you do not have the permissions to connect to the server 'vCenter server IP address.

    2. cannot complete the connection incorrect username or password-, this error is visible when I do not specify domain\username domain user name and simply enter the user name.

For the details of the error, please see the screenshots - vSphere_client_1, vSphere_client_2 and vSphere_client_3.

As suggested in the link below, I tried to create an SPN and then set the SPN (Principal of Service name) and the UPN (User Principal name) in the Active Directory identity Source using the web of vSphere client (please see screenshot vSphere_Webclient_2)

    http://vinfrastructure.it/2014/01/issue-in-logging-into-vCenter-server-using-Windows-ad-credentials/

To fix the permission error, I tried to add the domain user to the Administrators group on the server vCenter (see screenshot vSphere_Webclient_1).

However, none of the above-mentioned resolution has worked.

So can someone please help? I am stuck because of this problem and badly need help to move forward.
