VCB suspension of Exchange

I just built a new Standard 2003 and Exchange 2003 Standard running virtual machine. I'll implement VCB to backup the virtual computer.

I added the two scripts: pre-antifreeze - script.bat and post-thaw - script.bat to C:\Windows.

I added a line to the scripts that created a text doc, so I could verify that the scripts are actually being run.

I ran VCB on the machine, and of course the two scripts run and two scripts created text files. However, two text files have been created at 16:12 (less than 1 min interval).

Keep in mind that it is a new server with no users are still using, so not very busy...

My questions are:

(1) could the scripts and the snapshot both executed in less than a minute?

(2) I use the correct scripts?

(3) what else am I missing?

Here before freezing:

GT; c:\aFreeze.txt & gel ECHO

off @echo

NET Stop MsExchangeSA /Y

Here's the thaw after:

GT; c:\aThaw.txt & thaw ECHO

off @echo

NET Start MsExchangeSA

NET Start MsExchangeIS

NET Start MsExchangeMTA

Yes, this is what is happening.

Pre script prepares the system for the snapshot.

VCB creates the snapshot

Post script returns the system to the features

System returns to normal operation

VCB backups to the top of the snapshot

VCB releaseses snapshot

If you look at this way you can see that the post script does not wait for the backup to the end, he's waiting just for the nod to create.  1 min is probably enough time to stop the service on an unused exchange server and create a wink.

Have you tested a restore?

If this was helpful, give me credit

  • VCB & Exchange backups

Hi, we're building a mailbox exchange server 2010 in a VSphere cluster. The server will host approximately 3200 mailboxes, each 2 GB, spread over 7 DB.

Each of these DB will be on his own logic (on a HP EVA6400) unit number, ranging from the CT 1.1 to 1.7 TB.

If we perform a backup VCB on this server that my understanding is that the server is in snapshot mode and meanwhile an extra space will be needed on each unit number logic for any changes made to the disks and I'll try to find an estimate for the additional space to allocate-does anyone have a rough idea of the level of congestion or tips on how to calculate this?

With snapshots, the amount of space required would be based on the estimated amount data written during the time of expected for FullVM backup copy.

HOWEVER... It is NOT a good idea to backup with VCB transactional systems. VSS providers and sync drivers do not play nice with SQL or Exchange. Usually, I recommend using it to only backup system using an agent for transactional/mail/base backup of data.

  • VCB stopping the MTA stacks service on Exchange

    Hello world

I wanted to know if anyone has had problems making snapshots via VCB with exchange. It seems every time I capture instant Exchange, the MTA Stacks service stops, of course become a problem. I do to prevent this?

  • Someone found VCB 1.5 suspension custom scripts?

    Hello-

I am trying to run scripts of standby on a w2k3 virtual machine. I'm running ESX 35.U2 / VC 2.5U2 and VCB 1.5. According to the machine backup Guide virtual pg 52, freeze and thaw pre scripts after are now under C:\Program VMware Tools\backupScripts.d.

For before the Frost, it says "all the scripts are called in alphabetical order with gel like first growing argument." I created a pre-antifreeze - script.bat and one freeze_script_1.bat under this directory. None worked. In addition, C:\windows\pre-freeze-script.bat does not either...

Is there a file name for this convention? Any help would be appreciated...

    Dave,

There should be no special appellation as not necessary fo the scripts under C:\Program VMware Tools\backupScripts.d\

  • VCB concepts - I'm on the right track?

OK, I'm deciphering the VCB manual right now.  I am wanting to make sure I am properly grasp the concepts and sequences of events that occur during a backup VCB using standby of Custom Scripts.

Let me see if I have this right:

    Example of VM: Exchange 2003

    vcbMounter.exe is called

    Prior backup script is called

Runs a script to freeze before the virtual machine, C:\Windows\pre-freeze-script.bat (suspension of a custom Script)

The information store, which allows a snapshot of the suspension of the database stops

Committed a SYNCHRONIZATION driver to do is magical, flush i/o and data incorrectly, which makes the compatible file system.

Quiesces NTFS, made sure no file system written is pending at the time of the snapshot is taken, allowing the creation of file system, consistent backups

    Snapshot is created

    Unquiesces NTFS

    Clear the SYNC drivers

Runs a script of post-thaw in the VM, C:\Windows\post-thaw-script.bat (suspension of a custom Script)

    Information store starts

Export the snapshot files, disks and configuration of a virtual machine to a local directory on the VCB proxy server

    Snapshots are dismantled

Gratz exported files VCB backup software.

Result: an image backup that are files AND databases compatible, as apposed to crash - in a uniform way, correct?

Question: SYNC seems to be optional, it must be enabled in this senario?

What I usually recommend to clients is:

Make your drives C:, D:, E: all newspapers and data readers can be on RDM. If RDMs, do not make them virtual mode.

Install Exchange on C: and data point, newspapers, etc. for other readers.

Do a weekly backup of C: selective fullVM only. Take a look at this method->http://communities.vmware.com/blogs/jturver

Use your backup software client to backup C: State of the system and Exchange. (I recommend at least the mail store. Add 'selective' if there is enough time)

    Restoration will be this:

VMware COnverter to create the virtual Exchange computer from backup VCB. You will need to manually create the data disks.

Backup software allows you to restore Exchange. You may need to restore C: and State of the system (again) from the customer to backup as well.

BE SURE TO TEST AND DOCUMENT THE RECOVERY PROCEDURE.

  • Suspension of Application VSS

    Hi guys,.

Asked me my opinion and honestly, that I didn't to my lack of experience with vSphere replication; so I thought that I would ask you of your please.

I understand this suspension of application level requires Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 8.  The 'Introduction to vSphere replication' document indicates that VSS suspension should work with applications such as SQL Server or Exchange.  But what are peoples thoughts and/or experiences with the VSS suspension for applications like Exchange, SQL, and AD?  Has been consistent when replicated data recovered on the DR site?  Do the authors of the database to rinse correctly as planned?

Basically, it works well and everyone has questions or problems with transactional replicated data from the base?  Is it right to use?

Also, I assume that if we had problems with say SQL on a VM retrieved, that this would not be supported by Microsoft?  Since VMware Tools invokes only VSS I don't see any reason why not?

Thank you for your time and hope to hear back with your thoughts and opinions!

    See you soon...

But what are peoples thoughts and/or experiences with the VSS suspension for applications like Exchange, SQL, and AD?  Has been consistent when replicated data recovered on the DR site?  The authors of the database to rinse properly as expected?

My experience has been that SQL 2005 SP2 and later on Windows 2003 and later is generally consistent. Usually is the key word, though, in that, it is important to test the replicas for consistency. Can't speack to Exchange, because I never have it reproduced this way. AD will depend entirely on the AD version in use. vSphere U2 5.0 and 5.1 support ID VM-generation, which allows DCs Windows 2012 to replicate this way and be taken in charge. See http://blogs.vmware.com/apps/2013/01/windows-server-2012-vm-generation-id-support-in-vsphere.html for more information on this.

I am not sure on the SQL in MS media with this scenario 100% either - I've heard of conflicing reports and have not seen a definitive answer to this.

The approach I want to take with SQL (if possible) is to use local replication. BAK or OnDemand files backups and virutal machine also get replicated the scene of DR. In this way, you have several options to restore from, if one of them does not work for some reason any. As mentioned earlier, however, test the lines is crucial.

  • Documentation and standby VCB

Try to get the suspension of scripts to work in ESX 4 (ditto for 3.5 U4 incidentally), I discovered that the documentation is either incomplete, or simply incorrect.

I speak only of virtual machines Windows here, but in several messages on this community and other forums, I see the same thing for Linux guests.

The VCB backup guide says in 2 different places to freeze the scripts:

    -ESX 3.5 U2 pre: pre-antifreeze - script.bat and post-thaw - script.bat in c:\Windows

-U2 3.5 and later: 1 single script that takes freeze and thaw as arguments, located in the program Vmware Tools directory, subdirectory backupscripts.d

On the two ESX 4U1 and 3.5 U4, using VCB 1.5 U1, I had problems to freeze the scripts to work when you use the format of path and the script described in the documentation.

In the hostd.log of the ESX host, I found entries that showed the C:\Windows\pre-freeze-script.bat starting, instead of the script, I expect, based on the documentation, so I put the scripts there, and they worked.

    So, what is everything?

Is there someone who can provide accurate information on the use of scripts of gel, and where they should be put? (please don't point me to the documentation on the Vmware Web site, I read that and it is wrong, as I described above)

It does make a difference if I installed Vmware VSS provider or not? (two cases I had the problem with, has no, and I have not tested in a virtual machine, it was still installed)

The new location is only used if VSS is installed with VMware tools. In order to get a solution that works always place just a wrapper on the new location that points to the original scriptname remaining on the old rental (%windir%\System32). Please keep in mind that the current versions of VMware tools changed his installation on 64-bit windows path. So be sure that you create the folder "backupScript.d" in the right place and keep an eyes open if your upgrade tools where already implement you the sleep scripts.

    1. create the file 'backupScripts.d' in /path_wher_vmwaretools_installed/

    2. place the wrapper "vcb.bat" in "backupScripts.d".

    3. create the pre_freeze and post_thaw.bat files in c:\windows

    4. create 2 text files (vcb_msg_start.txt, vcb_msg_stop.txt) to send msg in c:\windows (only 3 attachments are allowed here)

I have attached the files of my solution which has also written to a log file and also by e-mail [1] notify if you wish. You can test the current full thing with a "vcb.bat gel" and "vcb.bat thaw."

blat.exe and sleep.exe is necessary for sending email from the command line

  • VCB - sizing LUNS.

    Hi all

    Here's my situation.

I want to install a Win Serv 03 VM as a simple file server.

Here is the config I want to use for this machine.

    Environment:

ESX 3.5 - using SAN storage via iSCSI.

    Two LUNS:

1 logical unit number: capacity 557 GB total. Configured to hold 4 discs with a total 480 GB storage.

MON 2: 280 GB total capacity. Configured to contain 2 discs with a total 246 GB.

VM is configured to use only 2 GB of RAM.

    VCB Setup:

We use Symantec Backup Exec 12.5 with the VMware agent.

We use a WinServ 03 box as our VCB Proxy.

How much space each LUN swap do I need in order for VCB backup successfully this virtual machine?

    Kind regards

    Phil

It is not a concept of Exchange as far as I know, just needs space VCB proxy (equal or superior to) size VMDK virtual machine, if it's a backup of fullVM (as it is a complete copy of vmdk).

Also the data store needs of enough space for the VCB snapshot will be created.

  • VCB with Windows 2000 Server before and after! Does not!

In our configuration (esx3.5, vi2.5 and vcb 1.5) we have problems get the pre post scripts running in Windows 2000 Server. It does not at all pre/start scripts. We need this because we have some strange databases that must be stopped before the snapshot and started after.

The 2000 machine is fully updated, and the esx servers are updated 4.

I also tried in a test environment with esx3i fully updated (beyond update 4) and vcb1.1

Pre-Post controls work perfectly in 2003 (not yet tested in 2008).

    What I tried:

    • Disable-ing the SyncDriver (must be a solution for Server 2000 with Exchange 2000)

    • Place scripts to a location different (C:\WINNT or C:\Windows or C:\Program VMware Tools\backupScripts.d

    • Adding C:\Program VMware Tools\backupScripts.d to the $PATH variable so that the script can be run from anywhere

    • Reinstall the VMWare tools.

The command I used to get the backup:

    v h vcbMounter.exe *. n u .local \n*-ipaddr:vcbtest. .local - r c:\vcb\vcbtest-full-01 t m nbd fullvm

    I also tried adding the switch "0 q" or "q 1".

No solutions seem to work. Does anyone have any ideas?

  • Level VCB and file restores

    Hi all

I know VCB is designed to Image backups, but I was wondering if there is any plugin, additional software or 3rd party software which can restore files on a VCB image?  or do you still have to use VCB for virtual machine image backups and as Symantec Backup Exec products for file-level backups?

I withdraw that.  It seems that 12.5 BackupExec does support both.  Learn about Backup Exec 12.5 Agent for VMware Virtual Infrastructure (SATA).

It is on the Symantec site:

Backup Exec 12.5 Agent for VMware Virtual Infrastructure (SATA) takes the benefits of the VCB while

  • iOS 10 with certificate self-signed in MS Exchange

    Hello

I try to connect a 5SE iPhone on iOS 10.0.2 with a MS Exchange Server from 2013.

The iPhone stops with "can't check the server. On iOS, I had the choice between 'Detail', 'Cancel' and 'Continue '.

IOS 10, I can choose between "Retail" and "Cancel".

Is it necessary to import the corresponding root CA to the iPhone?

After 3 days to talk to Apple, 1st level 2nd level, and then 3rd level, can be referred to as Apple UK 4 tier support ofth , who then told Apple City international partner assistance to the companies. They finally recognized that there is a problem. They will not take any responsibility for the origin of the problem because they say that it is a 'system level cross' IE Apple talking to Microsoft, even if it affects only ios 10. They said they are working on a fix, but it will not turn out until probably the next versions of ios 10. They have apparently will keep me in the loop on their progress.

For the time being the only solution I found is to use the Microsoft Outlook client for iphones until Apple notifies otherwise.

  • iOS problem 10 Exchange calendar sync

iOS 10 has introduced a bug that causes a problem with Exchange Calendar synchronization. I use an iPhone 5 and an Air iPad with iOS 10.0.2 on both. My employer provides a shared with Office 365 Exchange calendar. I use Outlook 2013 on a Windows 7 laptop. Since I upgraded my iPhone & iPad iOS 10 I met a problem with syncing my calendar. More specifically, when I delete a single instance of a recurring event from my iPhone or iPad, change syncs not on the server and do not appear on my other devices. There is no problem if I remove Outlook on my laptop. I use recurring reminders throughout the day as "to-do's" so not being is not able to remove them from the device is a problem for me.

Based on something I saw in another form, I tried disabling the button "Events found in Apps" in the settings on my iPhone and iPad and then deactivation and reactivation of the Exchange Calendar synchronization. This has not solved the problem.

Is there a fix or a workaround for this problem? If not, does anyone know how I can report it to Apple on the off chance they might care enough to solve the problem?

I have exactly the same problem. Items on my exchange calendar are endangered on my iPhone which is a major issue since I use my phone as my reminder of the main calendar to be in the right place at the right time. This is a serious problem for me. I tried to delete and add the calendar back, putting my phone on and off, nothing works. Now I have even less showing appointments, it is as if he deleted all. I am extremely frustrated.
