VCenter 4 to 5 upgrade - urgent...

Hello

We currently have 2 ESX 4 servers in a cluster. VCenter 4 is used.

I have a new esx Server 5, which comes to be put online.

I want to migrate a virtual machine from the ESX 4 cluster on the new server ESX 5.

  1. I have to spend my Vcenter bersion 5 for me to be able to do this?
  2. Once upgraded will I still be able to view my ESX 4 cluster?
  3. I guess I'll have to stop the machine and to migrate the host ESX 5,.

Thank you

  1. I need to install my Vcenter version 5 for me to be able to do this?
--> Yes, vCenter Server 4 cannot manager ESXi 5 hosts. However, vCenter 5 can manage ESX 4.x host.
  2. Once upgraded will I still be able to view my ESX 4 cluster?
--> Yes, for more details how this must be follow the vSphere Upgrade Guide
  3. I guess I'll have to stop the machine and to migrate the host ESX 5,.
--> It depends on the new host and its processor as well as the configuration of the current cluster (CTS) if processors match or guests can use the same basic CVS, you will need to plan no downtime for virtual machines.

Please read http://kb.vmware.com/kb/2007269 if you are currently running ESX 4.0 Update 2!

  • Not able to connect in vCenter 5.5 after upgrade

I installed vCenter from 5.1 to 5.5.0, build 1750795. The upgrade process has been the sweetest all the upgrade I did since 3.5, until I tried to connect. He said ' you are not allowed to log on the server: vCenter. I found 2035758 KB, but when I tried to add a new domain of identity source, I got the error saying "There is already a native AD ID or AD LDAP registered ID". The vCenter is a child domain member server, but this child domain is not in the identity source, while the root domain and another child. In the web client, I can use admin@system-domain and my administrator of domain (in the same child domain as vCenter) for you to connect. I see that no host have been reconnected.

Someone had this error before? Anyone know what I'm missing?

    Thanks in advance

    Byron

Anyway, I contacted the technical support and I was told to use [email protected] to connect and assigned administrator rights for admins of the domain to the level of vcenter. After that, I was able to use my administrator account in domain to connect on vSphere client and web client. After further research, I found that admin@system-domain is no longer the administrator of SSO, instead, it has changed to [email protected]. Little things, but frustrating.

  • vCenter 5.5.0 upgrade the unit to 5.5.0a - how?

I looked through all the README and PDF I can find to get instructions on how to upgrade my camera 5.5.0 vCenter using the upgrade file.  I downloaded VMware-vCenter-Server-Appliance-5.5.0.5101-1398493-updaterepo.zip , just need instructions.

You can find the instructions in VMware KB: zipped update the VMware vCenter Server Appliance of a package update.

  • VCenter SSO 5.5 upgrade problems - cannot start SERVICE KDC VMWARE

Hi, I am trying to upgrade my current SSO that was installed about a month ago (a complete reinstallation of my quite vcenter environment.

At some point, the failed to install gives me this error message. "Service"VMware Kdc Service"(WMwareKdcService) failed to start. Check that you have sufficient privileges to start system services. »

I installed as the domain administrator, which obviously has rights of a local administrator on the Windows Server.

Any help or can someone point me to a log file, I can watch or something.

    Thank you!

    Michel

More tweaking... KDC service requires port 88 to begin.

Netstat - abn shows vpxd.exe uses port 88. When I installed vCenter, I had chosen port 88 as port 80 is already in use by IIS... I disabled now IIS and want to move back to port 80 vCenter.

Now, someone has an idea how I can change vCenter refer to port 80?

  • vCenter 5.1 - after upgrade to 5.1 memory usage

    Hi all

Just a quick question about how much memory you guys have allocated to your Windows 2008 R2 installs the vCenter base 5. 1 b, we recently upgraded to 5.0 and I saw a marked increase in the use of memory with peaks of over 85%, we have the following configuration:-

    2vCPUs

    4 GB of RAM

    20 guests

    429 VMs

The only difference between 5.0 and 5. 1B for us will be the installation of the single sign we service (SQL hosted remotely) and also a foundation vcops 5.6 installation (but it's not technically on vcenter).

If the amount of memory are other people running on their vcenters?

IM watching it go up 6 GB...

    See you soon

    Stew

    Hello

If vCenter Server and Single Sign-On vCenter vCenter Inventory Service are installed on the same host computer (as with vCenter install Simple), 10 GB of RAM are required.

  • Permissions in vCenter AD during the upgrade with SSO

I have an existing vCenter 4.1 with many existing permissions based on AD users and groups, which is member of a domain that trusts the domain where users and groups reside. As a result, SSO Setup does not add the trusted domain as a Source of identity during installation, only the domain of the server vCenter himself. Nobody knows what will happen to the existing permissions in vCenter during an upgrade? If not, is it possible to connect SSO before vCenter is updated and add the AD domain approved as a source of identity?

    Thank you

    John

What I've been through, if users/groups defined in 4.1 installation are not in the defined identity sources, they will be deleted (the installation program creates a file deleted_vc_users with a list of these users that you can then view them later) from the database.

After installing SSO, install the Web Client and use it to manually add your domain (s) and then go back and install the other components.

  • VCenter and host ESX upgrade details

    Hello

When I run vmware - v on my esx host. I see the output as VMware ESX 4.0.0 build-208167 and my vcenter Server 4.0.0 208111 watch and I want to VC\ESX 4.0 Update 2. When I check the upgrades for ESX 4.0.0 build-208167, shows me the build under ESXi (Embedded and installable) and not under ESX. A little confused but is that correct? The latest version is also "Build number: 660575. Can I directly go here? What is the process?

    Please notify

    1. so my hosts are now on the ESX update and version number, by following your steps would take them to ESXi last updated and build number which is simply the next last update of level and the patch level. What is the correct interpretation? We call this an update or upgrade?

    > the steps I mentioned will bring the level of the last update, IE ESX 4.0 to ESX 4.0 host update4... Do NOT ESXi.

    2. What is the right approach to find the last bet to day and the patch level, given my example so that I don't have to bother you guys again in the future.

    > Keep track of VMware patch portal http://www.vmware.com/patchmgr/download.portal

Select the product ESX and version 4.0.0 and do a Search. It will list on the latest patches and updates released. You can check with the dates or numbers of patch.

    3. According to the steps you provided, do I just download the Update Pack and patch at one of the warehouses of data that is submitted to these hosts and then run the command of esxupdate course after first having the server in maintenance mode?

    > Yes

    4. is there a separate procedure for updating the vCenter Server also?

    > For vCenter, you need to download setup vCetner for 4.0 update 4 and run the installer.

Please go through vSphere 4.0 Upgrade guide for details.

  • vCenter 4.1-5 upgrade in bound Mode

We have 6 vCenters 4.1 running.  Our main vCenter that we started the thing linked modes together with must be upgraded to vCenter 5 but after reading the release notes, I see as vCenter 4.1 and 5 cannot live together.

If I delete the main vCenter linked mode, not vCenters unplug all other linked between them?

If you do 1 vCenter, break its linked modes configuration, then you can upgrade.  The other 5 should not be affected.  There is no 'Master' vCenter Instance in a linked mode configuration.

  • ESXi hosts disconnected/no response in Vcenter after upgrade (4.1 = > 5.5)

Hello. I'm upgrading our current infra (hosts/Essential licensing Vcenter / 3 ESXi 4.1).  vCenter Server has been upgraded OK, so I started to esxi upgrade hosts one by one.

Upgrade process is OK, but after the reboot, upgrade marked as "not responding" in vsphere client server. I could ping this host and connect via ssh.

When you try to reconnect the client host, got a strange error "this edition of vCenter only supports 3 host (s) in the inventory. After 3-4 hours of nothing to host

has begun to show ok. After upgrading a second host, the same situation. I don't understand, how to solve it without waiting for another 4 hours.

Restart of host management agents does not help.

I remember I have a similar situation in the past where the number of licenses does not update as expected, i.e. required some time. What helped was to restart the server vCenter Server in my case. Maybe worth a try!

  • What are the steps to upgrade to vCenter/vSphere Essentials Plus 5.0 to vCenter/vSphere 5.5 Standard?

We currently have VMWare Essentials Plus on 3 hosts, with 2 processors each. We wanted to add 2 more ESX host, so we improved our standard for vCenter/vSphere license to version 5.5. We try to find the best possible route to install 5.5 on the hosts and upgrade the server vCenter Server with our new version of the granting of licenses and software. The best initial step would be to apply the new license in the current framework 5.0 hosts and vCenter server and then upgrade the software 1 by 1? Or apply the new license to our current Server vCenter, pgrade to 5.5 server and then upgrade each host? Our Dell Rep gave me this guide (updated for VMware vSphere, Cloud Computing for companies of all sizes |) United States) and mentioned if we need assistance, contact VMWare.

    Any guidance would be appreciated.

5.0 and 5.5 must use the same keys. Then start by adding the new license key to your vCenter server then you are able to manage more than 3 guests.

Next step would be to update the server vCenter to 5.5 so it can handle actually 5.5 hosts.

Subsequently you would update the hosts.

Host licenses can also be replaced at any time during this process, because they are also specific 5.x version.

Theoretical you could even stay on 5.0 and simply replace licenses if they are not a sort of special license keys.

Your existing certificate will be in place while you perform the upgrade to vCenter server and after upgrade too.

  • Cannot verify the compliance of the profile on ESX 4.1 after 5 upgrade vCenter.

We recently upgraded to version 5.0.0 623373 vCenter.  Since the upgrade, I am unable to verify compliance on my host profile that applies to my hosts ESX 4.1 U1.  This profile of the host worked fine before the upgrade to vCenter.

When I check the conformity, the result is:

    Chess against host profile

Host is not available for verification of compliance.

I installed ESXi 5 on a new host and managed to create a new profile from it, apply it and check the line very well.  (I did not apply this profile to a host ESX 4.1)

    Any ideas?

Create the profile of some hosts (maybe 4.1 or 5) version.

Attach this profile (profile management) to all guests, where you had compliance check failure.

If you have vCenter upgrade from 4.1 to 5 then profiles are not "compatible".

  • Install/configure vCenter 4.1 U1 version before the hosts upgrade?

What is the best way to upgrade to 4.1 U1?

    1. upgrade current vCenter 4.1 install to 4.1 U1

    2. install or upgrade hosts

    Thank you, Tom

This is the required way.  Always upgrade vCenter until you can upgrade your hosts.

  • upgrade to vCenter 4 to 4.1 or build new 4.1 server and migrate

    Hello.

We plan to migrate our existing vsphere environment (vCenter 4.0 and ESX 4.0 update1/w) to vCenter 4.1 and ESXi 4.1.  We currently have 3 ESX 4.0 host and a physical vCenter 4.0 server.  The plan is to upgrade vCenter 4.1, build two hosts ESXi 4.1 on unused hardware, migrate virtual machines to new ESXi hosts and then rebuild the host ESX 3.  Have I not the steps in the right order?

Our server vCenter 4.0 existing is running Windows 2008 Std x 64

Another option I'm considering strongly is to simply create a new server vCenter 4.1 and not make a room upgrade, fix 3 ESX 4 server on the new server vCenter, decomission the old server vCenter 4.0, build 2 new ESXi servers, migrate all virtual machines to these two new servers and then rebuild the 3 servers ESX 4 to ESXi 4.1.

In addition to historical performance data, what else would I lose if I build a new vCenter server vs. the upgrade.  Our virtual machine environment uses HA and nothing else (well, we have NetApp IVMS and VSC, which I'll have to upgrade to the latest versions either if we make a room upgrade or new construction).  The main objective is to have a server stable vCenter 4.1 for the long term and the ease of migration to 4.1.  Also, there are licensing issues during this transition, I might need to worry?

The steps that you plan should all work. Don't forget to disable HA in modernizing and moving hosts! There are also not many that you lose with a new database. As you mentioned it is basically data historical parameters of cluster as HA...

However I probably would do it differently. Unless you have a policy to run the server vCenter Server on a physical hardware, create the other as a virtual machine. Once install, add 3 existing hosts to the new vCenter Server. Then upgrade to existing level hosts one at a time to the fast vMotioning of the VM for two other existing hosts.

  • What to prepare before upgrading VCenter 4.0 to 4.1?

    Hello world

Do I need to save or prepare before moving my ESXi 4.0 to 4.1?

I have SQL Server 2008 SP1 as the database for the version of VCenter 4.0 now.

    Hello

If you upgrade the instance of vCenter Server on the same server, you must create a DSN, 64-bit as vCenter 4.0 uses a 32 - bit DSN.

Don't forget to make a backup of the vCenter database before the upgrade process.
