vCenter ID Unique

Anyone know of a way to get the unique ID from vCenter through powercli or sdk?  Having no luck finding anything on this parameter outside the GUI manual recovery.  I hate to have to go poking around in the registry to vCenter

Try like this

$si = Get-View ServiceInstance$setting = Get-View $si.Content.Setting$setting.QueryOptions("instance.id") | Select -ExpandProperty Value

  • Considerations when changing the vCenter Server Unique ID?

We have a minor problem with MAC address collisions, and to fix it, I want to change the ID of vCenter Server Unique from our "view" vCenter Server.

    (see KB1024025)

However, I fear that there may be some side effects, of which I am unaware, and decided this time I would like to better ask before doing something stupid.

Is it safe to change the Unique ID of a vCenter Server used by VMware View?

Do I have to wait for any other effect that newly generated in another range MAC addresses?

I have crossed a reinstall of my machine to vCenter using my existing db, but do not go back and change the ID Unique in what it was previously, and it caused no ill effects.  Having said that, for consistency, I made them the same thing.  I know that the ID to be used only for MAC and UUID, so there should be no problem.

  • run a VM on vcenter workflow unique sdk connection

    Hello world

I'm short vCO 5.5.1 material, connected to 13 vCenters spread around the world. Yes I know, probably not the best idea, but it doesn't seem to work properly. We're not really able to re-architect to take advantage of the cluster to the time mode.

Anyway, with that many connections of vCenter to vCO, even simple VM operations take a long time. This is due mainly to the fact that even the simple workflow that power VMs seem to rely on the questioning of ALL connections of vCO SDK. We provide a virtual machine name (or UUID) as input and vCO then queries all our vCenters until it can return an VC:VirtualMachine object, which is then used as the real input parameter to run VM-associated workflows in question.

Anyone know of a more effective and efficient to have the vCO to retrieve the VC:VirtualMachine object, instead of an iteration on all connections of the SDK?

The place where you start the workflow?

Get VM by name is a bad habit, especially if you have many vCenters / VMs.

vCO has a nice tree inventory to load in the inventory items only in containers (VM files, resource pools) you select.

If you use an external system that does not know how to interface with vCO API to get the tree view that you should get virtual machines by their ID.

You can start a workflow of vCO input the object ID (unique vCO or object of type + object ID + host vcenter) do:

    moRef var = new VcManagedObjectReference();

    moRef.type = ref.type;

    moRef.value = ref.id;

    vcObject = VcPlugin.convertToVimManagedObject (vimHost, moRef);

  • vCenter 6 device - integration of group do not add rights

    ##################

Now join the AD authentication system and set permissions:

    http://Wojcieh.NET/vCenter-server-appliance-6-VCSA-configuration/

    Input domain Details: example "ibm.aessatl.arrow.com".

    Test

Assign 'IBM\Domain Admins' high-level rights vCenter

    -> Global permissions ' + '.

    Select the group "domain admins".

    Add

Set the permission for vCenter from of the same steps above

Now set the permission of SSO for the device

    vCenter Home-> Administration-> manage

    ################

When I login, I get "no inventory".

When I add a user from ad it gives me rights (aka AD work), so it's sort of the group authorization.

Nothing, that I see in newspapers to guide to help debug this.  Any ideas?

    Thank you

After several attempts... reloading... using test systems... I found the way to make it work.

You must get the vCenter server to join AD, not just add AD as an authentication source.

    Example:

    (1) remove all AD / LDAP sources and awarded the first permissions

    (2) attach vCenter device to AD

Connect to vCenter via administrator account SSO-> Home-> Administration (left menu)-> Deploy (left menu)-> System Configuration

Select 'node', which should list the vCenter Server-> Manage (tab at the top)-> advanced-> Active directory-> choose the "Join" button

Settings for the field (leave empty organizational unit for most customers) and entry of user input "admin area" who can join the field systems

Task will run and not nothing intelegent... but no error means success event although java doesn't refresh it is now in the field.

Restart the vCenter. Open again as the SSO administrator account and is host to vCenter in the field.

You can also display the vCenter server is a host in AD as a computer object (Active Directory users and computers-> UO "Computers")

Now go back to add the announcement as an authentication source

Home-> Administration (left menu)->, Single Sign-on (left menu)-> Configuration-> click on '+' to add a new source of

Choose an option above to the announcement page and do not change any other settings

Last step is to add the "Domain Admins" group of the field to be a member of the 'Administrators' to vCenter role.

Now when you connect as a 'ibm\jsmith' you should see objects and have permissions.

    Hope this helps someone.

To get it we offer to do something like this:

    1. Deploy a new virtual (Server 2008 Std x 64) machine.
    2. Install SQL 2008 R2 on it.
    3. Copy (backup/restore) course SQL Express 2005 vCenter database to SQL 2008 on new virtual machine.
    4. Server vCenter 4.1 existing stop.
    5. Installing vCenter 5 on new virtual machine and attach it to the local instance of SQL 2008 R2.
    6. Have the new vCenter server to take control of all ESX hosts.
    7. Do?

How that sounds like a plan please?

  • vCenter DR

We are almost ready to deploy much cloud expected vSphere 4 at work. you have a few questions in mind if you would be grateful if I get those answering before you start the actual installation.

    (1) we want to deploy the cluster of vCenter 4 Update 1 and use SQL for DB. As there is a limitation of single VMDB accessed by vCenter server instance. If we have a vCenter crash (we decided to use the vCenter Server unique 4), how it is easy to build a new server, and then point to the same database and it would bring our infrastructure at same level just before the accident.

    (2) with this in mind, we decided to use primary vCenter on physical hardware and then use an instance of DR as a VM if we had the situation as indicated in Point 1, we could turn on virtual DR vCenter and point to our instance of database, so we are running. Is - it possible and it works?

    Receive your answer.

You can create a new vCenter with the existing data in the DB without problem.

  • Network mapping network Vsphere VCD

    Hello

So I'm new to VCD and try to understand best practices on how to map vcd networks return to networks vsphere.

I'll start with the external network.

In my vsphere network I already have a distributed with several groups of ports of production.  This distributed switch is supported by 2 natachasery starting from each host.  The natachasery connect to the ports of shared resources pswitch that allows traffic on all VLANs.

To set up my network external vcd.  Should I start with a new Distributed Switch groups port dedicated for the vcd?  If so, I guess I would need to devote natachasery to this new dvs?  I guess this new 'external network' should have no access to my production network?

    So what I think.

    1. new DS with a Teddy connected to my cisco switch.

    2. place a single vlan on that port to pswitch coming out just through my firewall to the internet.

    3. create the Group of ports on this new distributed switch

    3. create my vcd external network to use this port group who has access only to the vlan that comes out to the internet.  No connectivity to my network of vsphere production?

Again, I am new to vcd so feel free to offer a completely different solution.  I'm tryin to figure out how the vsphere networking should be setup to support these networks of vcd.

    Thanks in advance,
    Ian

Let me start by asking what is the purpose of this cloud.  Is it to run systems for yourself, or others (such as other companies).

This is a quick setup which I think will be works for many people, or at least as a starting place to get an idea how it goes toghether. I used it as a whole little clouds which was a private cloud, so it has worked well for the needs could help by giving you a start.

    In VCenter

    Unique DVS

4 cards network uplink on DVS

dvPortGroup to name VMKernel/VMotion "VMotion" VLAN 11

dvPortGroup to Managment named 'Management' VLAN 10

dvPortGroup to Internet only traffice name "InternetDirect" VLAN 12

dvPortGroup to the name of "VMNetwork" VLAN 13 Normal network traffic

VLAN 14 also install switch as private use to VCNI traffice between fenced of vApp

    In VCLoud

2 x network provider in VCD Setup

'Internet only' - pointed the DVS dvPortGroup named 'InternetDirect '.

'Normal network' - pointed the dvPortGroup named 'VMNetwork '.

    1 x network pool

'Standard network Pool' - configured to use VNCI on VLAN 14

For each org (we had some, but they are all very easy company)

added 2 networks for each and pointed provider networks

Unless I forget something that that's all we had to do to have a "normal" and the only network Internet and allow VAPP is fenced and have private network segments. -A bit of VLAN, we used could have been consolidated, but we liked the idea of knowing esxi-esxi traffic has been segmented wit ha vlan other speculation.

  • VC 4.0 to VC4.1

    Hi guys

I got VC 4.0 now wish us to migrate to 4.1 VC (new IP and host name)
The new 64 bit of virtual machine is created.

SQL Server 2005 is used and is located in a different server dedicated only for SQL databases.

    my questions would be
Should I install VC 4.1 in new windows, and then point the DSN on the SQL database?
going to make this change on the existing SQL?

I think I have to delete the existing VC ESX servers
    I also, export permits
Stop the service of the existing VC 4.0 VC

Add ESX to the new 4.1 VC

    Isn't it?
any other step? I should be aware of

Yes. The DB schema will be upgraded to ensure you have a full backup before the upgrade.  You will also need to create a new DSN connection using the 64-bit SQL Native Client.

any other step? I should be aware of

I would like to make a note of the vCenter Server Unique ID: and change the new instance of vCenter to take account of the former.  This must NOT be done, but it is always advisable to keep the same.  This will keep the MAC address of any new virtual machine compatible

  • Issue of fashion design

I'm starting to implement in our environment. From a design point of view, I thought that it would be more logical to install a second server vCenter to manage my desktop computers and then use my existing vCenter server to manage my servers (View Manager, 2nd vCenter server, etc...). My thought is that it would be best to separate the jobs of servers. This would include establishing a second license on my second server vCenter server to manage licenses.

I'm curious how other people have dealt with this? I'm leaving base? There are traps that I'm missing?

    Thank you.

There is a limit to how many virtual machines you can run in an instance of vCenter Server unique as mentioned Troy, and in your case for POC and 50 + VMs, its not critical to deploy a second vCenter server and it costs more money and an extra effort to support and administer itself and the new databases for vCenter/VUM, which is a concern.  I would get up two ESX hosts and named Cluster VDI and then you can also deploy the components of VMware View and Manager serverv in virtual machines.  If I were you, will use only 1 vCenter server and download the new license file and re-read console license management console and turn it on.  Of course, it would be great to run second vCenter instances if you have thousands of customers VDI running.

If you found this information useful, please consider awarding points to 'Correct' or 'useful '. Thank you!!!

  • SRM controls (pre and Post turn on)

I'm looking to what hooks are available under SRM to run scripts.

Ideally, I would like to be able to run scripts Powershell VI Toolkit (which would be pre power on for orders of type VM and post-puissance on orders of type guest VM) and Windows Scripts (post-tensioning).

I first thought that these scripts (as configured by the VM in the cable group) would run on the virtual machine in question.  I realize that they both run on the host SRM (the manual is not explicitly said, that could be useful!).   To get to the point, what I have to do is to identify the virtual machine that will be started so that I can script events to occur for this virtual machine.  I was looking for variables (i.e. something like VMName and GuestName %) that would allow me to execute commands to reconfigure the computer in question.  Does anything like this exist, or there at - it another way to do this?  If there is not, I consider something of a gap, I spend the VMname as a parameter to the scriot for each virtual computer.

    Thank you

Here is an excerpt of an article that I'm working on. I think that table 6 includes the types of

the variables you are looking for.

Order steps run with the identity of the local system account on the SRM

on the recovering site server host. When a step of the command runs, a number of

environment variables are defined in the runtime environment. Table 5 lists the environment variables that are available for all stages of order.

Table 5. Environment variables available to all stages of order

    Name

    Value

    Example of

    VMware_RecoveryName

The name of the recovery plan that runs

    "Plan A".

    VMware_RecoveryMode

    The recovery mode

    'test' or 'recovery '.

    VMware_VC_Host

The host name of the host to vCenter site recovery

    'vc_hostname.example.com '.

    VMware_VC_Port

The network port used to communicate with the host to vCenter

    '443 '.

Additional environment variables listed in table 6, are affected if the step of the order runs on a virtual machine that is recovered.

Table 6. Environment variables available to the ordering steps running on virtual machines recovered

    Name

    Value

    VMware_VM_Uuid

UUID used by vCenter to uniquely identify this virtual machine

    VMware_VM_Name

The name of this virtual machine, as shown on the protected site

    VMware_VM_Ref

The managed virtual machine object ID

    VMware_VM_GuestName

The name of the guest OS as defined by the API of VIM.

    VMware_VM_GuestIp

The IP address of the virtual machine if it is known.

Yes. documentation is generally called the recovery site model actions to achieve this. You must use the "custom installation" option to install the nth instance and you must designate this pair of instances with the same identifier string.

  • Can I have multiple vCenter instances in a tenant unique vRA 6.2.4?

We would like to take advantage of groups of companies compared to the creation of another tenant (a company), but we cannot find information around best practices regarding this approach, i.e., multiple vCenters.

It is altogether possible through VRA in the existing tenant and the entrepreneurial group, you need to create a new endpoint and configure it for the new VC, follow best practices, you can install vSphere Agent on a different virtual machine.

Then you need create the Group of fabric and select the newly added cluster of vCenter.

Then you must have the option to call this different EGG based on demand of each group just pinching? to do.

You must create a file location by editing the datacenterlocations.xml file in the server, IAAS, you can call it in any case you need.

in VMware documentation that it is based on the logic of the location, if you need you can give VC name (VC-A-PROD, VC-B-LAB).

To do this, please see VMware documentation

    http://pubs.VMware.com/vCAC-60/index.jsp?topic=%2Fcom.VMware.Vcac.System.Administration.doc%2FGUID-6D1E7644-754D-4DF8-A87D-B8E83F52C13A.html

by editin we're almost done, and now we need to call this named data center locations in the calculation of resources, go to the resource to calculate your new cluster is automatically generated since the creation of the Group of fabric, just edit the computing resources, select the location of data center filed in the LOCATION (say VC-B-LAB) tab.

Then is to change the output to calculate resources of VC-A , then select the location in the VC-A-PROD

Now you have done part mapping and you will need to create a reservation as usual and map it to the existing business, this allows two a booking for each group of companies, a VC - one point and the other points to VC - B.

Now, you need optimize the rightmost, I mean that whenever you ask the catalog, users should get an option to select the right places.

logically, the place to create the virtual machine.  You must create several events in blue, in the Blues draw existing itself enable 'DISPLAY LOCATION on DEMAND'. This allowed users to select VC (EndPoint) at the request of catalogue and to automate the process.

You also want to do one more thing, simply copy the blue print template to new VC without changing the name of the model.

    I hope this helps.
