vCenter Server 4 or 5: upgrade or install fees?

I work with a client who needs to upgrade their current vCenter Server 4.X to v5 (Physics/stand-alone). They decided to replace the physical vCenter server is installed on because the warranty will expire quickly and seller support will need to be renewed.

There are about 10-20 host ESX [4.1] and more than 200 virtual machines. I understand that a lot of configurations will be lost when moving to the new server vCenter Server. My questions are the following:

1. If you use the old DB from the previous VC, what should I know.

2 should I remove clusters and old guests of the VC before turning off?

3. What is the best order, by doing this? ((reference KB is nice))

4 can I completely remove the data center which managed the old VC - then put power off, and then add the ESX host and basically "start over"?

5. what 3rd party SSL certs? Someone had problems with these when you add hosts to the new vCenter Server?

6. currently, the environment has configured EVC modes, will be these configs maintained by the environment when I add the hosts in an EVC cluster with the new Victoria Cross?

Basically, I want to just cover all the basics and be as prepared as possible.

In addition, there are a separate part of the existing data center which must be PCI compatible, with special configurations in place. Will be those recognized by the new vCenter since I intend to old DB from VC help?

Thank you in advance for help and offer your experience and suggestions!

Hello

I consider this time that you asked before upgrade :-)

I work with a client who needs to upgrade their current vCenter Server 4.X to v5 (Physics/stand-alone). They decided to replace the physical vCenter server is installed on because the warranty will expire quickly and seller support will need to be renewed.

no problem with the new physical server migration

Open link below, your script is called, go to vCenter Server on a different Machine and upgrade the database, but I definatelly advice you read together the subject called to upgrade to vCetner Server 5 :-)

http://pubs.VMware.com/vSphere-50/index.jsp

1. If you use the old DB from the previous VC, what should I know

  • Stop services vCenter and DB do back up everything first, before the migration
  • point of ODBC new vCenter server up to old DB before the start of the migration

2 should I remove clusters and old guests of the VC before turning off?

not to feed anythin off :-) do not remove anything from the old server vCenter, just stop services vCenter before migration

3. What is the best order, by doing this? ((reference KB is nice))

See point above

4 can I completely remove the data center which managed the old VC - then put power off, and then add the ESX host and basically "start over"?

See the two points above

5. what 3rd party SSL certs? Someone had problems with these when you add hosts to the new vCenter Server?

If you migrate correctly use migration - migration utility provided by VMware, no problem with certificates

6. currently, the environment has configured EVC modes, will be these configs maintained by the environment when I add the hosts in an EVC cluster with the new Victoria Cross?

Migrate to the new vCetner with DB, you will avoid the problems of CVS

Good luck

  • vCenter Server Component install hangs on the installation directory services

    Hello

I'm on a 64-bit OS of Windows 2008. I update vCenter 5.5 Update 2 and 5.5 updated 3d.  I can install the SSO, WebClient and Inventory Service very well without any problems.  I get to the vCenter server component and it hangs on "Install Directory Services".  I checked the vminst.log and I get:

    "Try to start ["C:\Windows\system32\cmd.exe"/c start /w C:\Windows\system32\ocsetup.exe DirectoryServices-ADAM/passive /norestart].

I Googled that and of course a dozen connections to users having problems with installing the server vCenter on Windows 2012R2 lack the ocsetup.exe. As I said, I'm still on Win2008.  I have not ran sfc/scannow - no chance.  I tried to copy the ocsetup.exe from a Win2008 well-known to vCenter box - same thing.  Tried different accounts thinking I have a bad profile - no luck.  Anyone have a similar problem?

well, too bad.  I guess I wasn't be patient.  This time I let it "hang" and it finally finished after almost an hour.  At least see the progress bar move would have been useful.

  • Saving a vCenter Server in vSphere Client Web (5.5)

    Hello

I was wondering if it is possible to save multiple vCenter servers (all vCenter Server devices) with a single instance of vSphere Web Client that runs on one of these devices to vCenter?

VCSA1 > use built in Web Client to manage all vCenter servers.

    VCSA2 > register with VCSA1.

    VCSA3 > register with VCSA1.

I find no 5.5 specific information but what I've read I think it's possible on 5.1. The ' admin - cmd.sh' script does not seem to be present in my 5.5 VCSA however.

    VSphere Documentation Centre

The Server system, a device to vCenter Server vCenter is pre-recorded with the vSphere Client Web inside the unit. To register for another system of vCenter Server with the vSphere Client Web installed as part of a vCenter Server Appliance, you must use the admin-app script from the command line rather than the Web-based administration tool.

    Thanks for any help.

The admin app is no longer available with vCenter 5.5. If you register all the vCSA to a SSo central, they will all see the place in the web client unique management this SSO Server vCenter.

  • HP ML115G1 and vCenter Server installation

    Hi all

Please go easy on me because it's my first time with VMware

I have a ML115G1 with 5 GB RAM and 120GB HD, installed ESXi 4.1 and have a VM of Windows 2008 Server SP2 running no problem, I want to learn vCenter Server among others and tried to install it in this virtual machine, as I quickly discoveredvCentre requires 2CPUs which are at least 2 GHz, assuming that I understand it so far and I am not , what is the best way forward for me so that I can learn Vcenter in the following environment:

1 x Windows Server 2008R2 Virtual machine with vCenter, domain AD etc.

2 x Windows Server 2008 R2 running SQL2008 and center of System Configuration Manager

2 x windows xp or win 7 clients

assuming that I have very little $ to purchase a new high spec server to deal with all this and its only in a lab environment. What is the best way to go to implement, it will be used for myself training on products above, trials of software distribution, patch deployment, management of client of windows etc.

Any help will be greatly appreciated as Im in its early days and theres a heck of a lot to!

    Thank you very much

No, it should still install - it's just the 2 GHz is recommended and if I remember anything in the Setup goes and checks the closk speed -.

  • New server vCenter Server

I am running a 3.5 environment, and I want to get to sphere.

I'll create a new vSphere vCenter server to manage my boxes of esx 3.5 and possibly update these boxes to sphere.

Currently, vCenter 3.5 I manage my esx boxes, and this same server is the license server.

Can I simply create a new server and then add my esx boxes in its inventory of management?

Do I have to remove these boxes on the other server vCenter esx?

Can the two vCenters be running at the same time?

And have point to the new server cVenter to the old server vCenter for licenses, or simply keep the old server up?

    justinscanlon wrote:

Yes, unplug and remove hosts from the old environment of vCenter and add a host in the new

Do I have to remove these boxes on the other server vCenter esx?

    Yes

Can the two vCenters be running at the same time?

No.... not if they use the same DB instance.  If you use a different instance of DB, then Yes. But you can't manage the same ESX host in both environments.

And have point to the new server cVenter to the old server vCenter for licenses, or simply keep the old server up?

You can use your old license for your VI3 hosts server.  Home - vCenter Server Settings.  Or you can install a standalone license server.

  • The upgrade to vCenter Server to vCenter Server 5.1 5.1 update 1 when the SQL database is remote and vCenter Server Heartbeat is installed

    Hi guys,.

I'm in the middle of an upgrade to vSphere 5.1 5.1 vSphere update 1. I have vCenter protected by HB and SQL on a separate computer (also protected by HB) I also run Syslog, Update Manager and Proxy authentication on vCenter.

I've successfully upgraded HB on all 4 nodes (2 x vCenter & 2 x SQL) and started the upgrade components on the secondary according to the •vCenter Server Heartbeat 6.5 server and vCenter Update 1 Installation on Windows Server 2008 when the secondary server is virtual (PDF) http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vcenter-server-heartbeat-65-u1-installation-windows-2008-virtual-guide.pdf

    I got to step 3.c

    3. change the primary/active server role:

a launch of the vCenter Server Heartbeat wizard configure server and click the tab of the Machine to change the server role for the current server (primary) to the active State and click Finish.

b using the Service Control Manager, start the Server Heartbeat of VMware vCenter service.

c using the vCenter Server Heartbeat Console, check that all the status icons on the server: summary page are green indicating that the boot process is completed and protected from all the services are started.

d using the Service Control Manager, stop the service Server Heartbeat of VMware vCenter.

As the vCenter service does not start, I'm stuck at this point. As far as I'm concerned, the error is quite logical. I've updated vCenter using the secondary server, and then I'm trying to connect (according to the guide) with another version that breaks down.

If I continue with the services stop and launch the installer SSO, it is trying to perform an uninstall!

Did I miss something in this upgrade?

    Concerning

    Ciaran

Hi guys, VMware have finally updated the documentation to reflect the right way forward: https://www.vmware.com/support/pubs/heartbeat_pubs.html U1 6.5 Select from the menu drop-down and you'll see the last date of update for each of the documentation is now 10/10/2013. The guide States now specifically to restore the vCenter database before proceeding with any other measure, this is copied below for convenience: "the upgrade of the main server of the upgrade process further guess upgrading the secondary server completed successfully. Procedure 1 before continuing the upgrade process, perform a restore of the database of vCenter Server, Single Sign-On database, VMware Update Manager database and SSL certificates that were backed up in step 4 on the secondary server. regards Ciaran

I was wondering if someone met the upgrade a version 6.0 VMWare install to U1 or U2 upgrade and received a 1603 error.

The installation runs correctly on the external PSC, but when running against the vCenter Server fails and has a 1603 error and did a restore.

The VCSServiceManager component installation failed with error code "1603". Check the logs for more details

I tried all the other threads suggesting to have .net installed 3.5, the ipv4 stack and database permissions but are all there.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

For those who have encountered this problem in the future, was the way I solved this:

Question has been connected to the VMWare SysLog Collector Service. There is a problem with the new syslogcollection MSI being able to upgrade, uninstall or reinstall on the legacy.

Best way to solve this problem is to remove the reference to the old service of library of Windows Setup syslog collector. The way I did it was to use the Windows Installer CleanUp legacy.

Post this, remove installation held as scheduled and transmitted "installation VCSServiceManager.

If you come across this issue - you can test it by trying to run the msi syslogcollector contained in the directory of files binary vCenter.

  • The upgrade of our guests 5.0 ESXi and vCenter Server 5 and 5.5 Enterprise Plus

We are the 4 upgrade hosts of ESXi 5 to 5.5

We add 4 more guests with own ESXi 5.5 installed

We are also upgrading our vCS 5 in the vCSA 5.5

    Using Enterprise + licenses

Question: I'm trying to understand the best way to achieve this transition.  4 guests run about 100 virtual machines and 4 guests we add are clean slates.

That's what I think... Please help me guys

    1. once the 4 new hosts are installed in the Datacenter clean running ESXi 5.5 I will deploy the vCSA ovf and register 4 guests with the Linux-based device.

    2. now, I have 4 new 5.5 ESXi hosts registered and running with vCSA 5.5 but I still have my old 4 guests with ESXi 5 and registered to the old vCS about 100 virtual machines running WIndows

    3. at this point I think stop on my older hosts 4 virtual machines and remove them from the vCenter Server inventory Windows and everything just their registration with the new vCSA

    4. Will be all my virtual machines or transferred with the hosts if I close them and put the hosts in maintenance mode?

    5. now, I should have all 8 guests registered with my new vCSA.  But the original 4 hosts have yet to be upgraded to ESXi 5.5

6 move 100 virtual machines to the new 4 hosts running ESXi 5.5 and upgraded the 4 former hosts.

    7. now, I should have 8 guests with ESXi 5.5 using the vCSA

    See you soon!

    Pretty much.

To make things easier, you can deploy the EGGS for vCSA in your current vCenter (if I remember correctly import an OVA using vCenter allows you to set certain options that should be set to the vCSA shell). After making sure that the vCSA online & configured, you can then install ESXi on all your new hosts, add them to a cluster in the vCSA and put a few trials of virtual machines on there to confirm the network setting is configured correctly. Once it's done (and assuming that the old and the new hosts use the same shared storage) you can stop the vCSA, remove it stock Windows vCS, please write it on one of your new hosts and turn on. You have now two environments (5.0 and 5.5). Next if you disconnect a host from 5.0 vCS (with virtual machines running on it), you can then connect it to the vCSA 5.5. Assuming that the vSwitchs standard networking of the exchanges that are the same name in both environments, you now can vMotion VMs between host 5.0 and 5.5 cluster. At this time, you can repeat with all remaining hosts until everything has been made the transition without service interruption. This will leave a lot of old objects in your old 5.0 vCS, but if that is getting trashed it isn't a big deal.

  • Errors in the charge installing vcenter Server 5.5 with respect to the SQL database

I do a new install of vCenter Server 5.5 on a new Windows 2008 R2 server. The database for this facility is pointing at a 32-bit Windows 2003 SP2 server. I installed SQL Native Client 10.0 on server vCenter Server 64-bit, and then I could make my DSN ODBC 64-bit connection. The vCenter Server install could very well recognize it, but after the installation got going he wrong on the database with the following error:

Error 25003.Setup cannot create vCenter Server repository. The main reasons for this failure are:

-The database is installed using insensitive case.

-The database is remote and the client database version does not match the database version. If this problem continues to persist, see KB 1003960 for further assistance.

Well, I know that the version of the client and the version of database do not match. SQL native client on the sql server is 9.00.5000.00 and the version on the server vCenter Server is 10.50.1600.1.

I know that this version of vCenter is compatible with an installation of 32-bit sql server 2005 on a 32-bit server, 2003.

I am not familiar too if they want upgrade me sql native client on the sql server, but is not compatible with the version of sql server on this server and there are several database for other applications on this server, so I don't want to jump into something like that.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you.

I install the native client SQL 2005 and give a shot.

  • How to upgrade the hardware on a VCenter Server

In lab environment, two hosts, VCenter server, don't HA, storage etc. running share. I managed to upgrade hosts, using Crossover, but his declaration of errors when attempting to upgrade the hardware of server VCenter comments... I can see that it would be a problem, using VCenter to upgrade equipment on himself, when he needs to reboot the server to install. The question is, how to get around that? I tried to look for solutions, not found anything yet. Hope that makes sense.

Latest versions of everything, as it is a laboratory under eval licenses. Thank you

You must turn off the VM, connection to the ESXi host through vSphere client vCenter and right-click on the VM vCenter > virtual hardware upgrade.

Make sure that you run VMware tools before do you.

  • How can upgrade the extensions of vcenter Server version 5.0.0.16964

I upgraded vCenter Server 4.1 to version 5.0, but a message box has been invited during the process of upgrading to vCenter which is attached with this post. Please help how can install extensions to upgrade version of vCenter server 5.0.0.16964.

Use the vSphere client (when it is connected to the vCenter Server 5) and check plugins/extensions you installed here: Menu "Plugins / manage plugins.

You must update the plugin Manager Update to the new version. If everything else is enabled and work so no more away from updates are required.

  • Upgrade from vCenter Server 4 to vCenter 5 problems

I am trying to improve our server vCenter for ESXi 4.1 5. I ran the pre-upgrade and he reported no problems. After you have started the server vCenter 5 install received a message that it could not solve the COMPLETE computer domain name. I was connected under my auto (domain administrators) and could ping a domain FULL of my laptop. Is this an error message to the stop.

Then the installation wouldn't let me select the use of the local system for the Server service account. We have SQL 2008 installed on the server by using domain connections. At this point, I stopped the installation. Do I have to create a new domain account for the service and add it to SQL with SA privileges?

I have the downtime scheduled for this Monday finish the upgrade of our vCenter Server.

    Todd lemmiksoo

I recently came across the error "could not resolve field FULL of computer name", and which has proved to be a wrong PTR record in the reverse lookup zone. If there is an incorrect or missing PTR record, which could lead to this error.

You can consult the VMware Virtual Center Server service on your existing installation of vCenter to see which account is used on the tab log now? If it is not currently using the Local System account, you may need to use the account specified on the screen during the upgrade. If now it uses the Local System account, I don't know what to tell you on this subject.
