vCenter Server Service stuck on departure

Hi all

I ran a problem yesterday. One of my 5.1 ESXi hosts hung up. I had to start hard. Thus all virtual machines on this subject was turned off which included my 5.1 vCenter server. After I brought everything back online, I can't start the vCenter Server service. It is stuck on the start.

Here is my configuration:

For vCenter and SSO database: MS SQL (separate VM).

SSO Server: separate the VM.

vCenter Server: separate the VM.

It has worked fine for over a year and this is the first time, vCenter server service does not start.

I thought it might be linked to the database. So I restarted all servers: DB, SSO and vCenter in the same sequence, but without success.

When I go to the ODBC connection on vCenter server and try to reconfigure to connect to the DB, it gives the error:

The connection has failed.

SQL State: '08001'

A SQL Server error: 53

Could not open connection to SQL server (53)

The connection has failed.

I've attached a screenshot of the error.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thank you

AG

I solved this problem. For some reason any. the NETWORK card on the vCenter server was disconnected after the crash. vCenter could not ping the database. Checked the NETWORK card and everything is OK.

  • vCenter Server Service does not start after P2V

    Hello community.

A problem that I have not been able to solve and looking for help.

    Problem:

vCenter Server Service does not start after that Windows Server was P2V would be.  We get an ERROR 2 of the Service.  Get the error of the system Windows 7024 event log.

    History:

The client, I currently work with that tries to smash to the high location of the DEV VCENTER.  Location of DEV vcenter works now all for this site (domains, dns and all development servers).  If its VCENTER PRODUCTION of this location.  Currently, SQL Server (dedicated to vCenter), VCENTER and SSO are all sitting on the same box.  Let's break the SSO, SQL and VCENTER in their own servers.  However, the client wants to re - use the current physical server for SQL Server.  So I need P2V physical server existing until I can start the new environment.

I was able to get all of the services working on the virtual vCenter (SQL, SSO, Update Manager etc etc) but have been unable to get the real vCenter Server Service works.  Fails every time with the 2 ERROR Code.  I was unable to get a KB of VMWARE item that corresponds to the issue I'm having.  ERROR 2 code has many articles and none have worked.

    Details:

    vCenter 5.1 Build 799731

    SQL 2008 R2

    Windows 2008 R2

When the vCenter Service tries to start it will stop at the 50% mark and gives this error: (I removed the names for security reasons)

Windows could not start the VMware VirtualCenter server on <server name>. For more information, see the system event log.  If it is a non-Microsoft service, contact the service vendor and refer to service 2-specific error code

When I saw the Windows system event log I get this error:

    EVENT ID: 7024

The VMware VirtualCenter Server service stopped with the error special service that the system cannot find the specified file...

When I go through the vpxd log file I see this at the end of the newspaper: (I removed the names for security reasons)

I pulled the virtual machine in a laboratory and all network problems that would be removed to isolate.  Now the VCENTER is shouting at this topic it can't find one of its guests in the vdxp log, but that shouldn't matter.  All Services have been changed for local accounts.  All network and ODBC parameters are able to see the server... aka the server can see.  I didn't remove any software or drivers for the VM (techniques it is my third P2V to the same server for testing reasons)... And the only thing that won't start is always VCENTER SERVER... SSO is started, SQL is launched...

Also everything remained the same on the virtual machine (DNS, IP, NAME etc etc). Stop the physical and start-up it upward don't show any problems.  Only when its summer P2V would have done that themselves.

I can't get this number.  Need help.

    Thoughts?

In this case, we have finished rebuilding the vCenter and all migrate on.  Wish had better put up-to-date, but ultimately, it's what has been done.

  • vCenter Server service does not start after you run Windows updates

On a regular basis, my vCenter Server service fails to start after the automatic updates of windows are applied.  The vCenter server is a datacenter 2008R2 VM.

The only other running applications are PerfectDisk and agents of ESET NOD32 - vCenter is in 4.1.  I tried to adjust the vCenter Server and WedAdmin service of delayed start, but that doesn't seem to make a big difference. • VMware vCenter Server service stops after 1 hour

I'm having a problem with my server vCenter 4.0. Less than an hour of a reboot, the VMware VirtualCenter Server service stops. If I restart it... It works for about an hour, then stops again. The following event is logged in the system event log. The VMware VirtualCenter Server service stopped with the error service special 2 (0x2).

I'm SQL2005 Express is using a virtual machine, windows 2003 Std, 1vCPU, 4 Gb RAM Tomcat and SQL use a lot of memory.

It is a similar problem to the responces you find on google - but not the same thing. My service will stop about an hour after a reboot clean and efficient.

    Ideas?

I see that you have conveniently left a crucial part of the document...

The part where is says this (pg 74).

Base Group of 2005Express of Microsoft SQL Server that you can use for small deployments of virtual hosts up to 5 and 50 machines. If the machine has Microsoft SQL Native Client is installed, remove it before installing

vCenter Server with the cluster database.

If the machine has MSXML Core Services 6.0 installed, remove it before installing

vCenter Server with the cluster database. If you are unable to delete using the

Add or remove programs, use the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. See

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/968749.

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 for Microsoft Windows XP, apply MDAC 2.8 SP1 to the client. Use the native SQL

So yes, you have exceeded your environment.  Still doesn't tell me if you looked at the SQL Express newspapers, because I'm sure that's the problem.

  • vCenter server service does not start

    Prakash,

Some of the steps I followed:

    vCenter 4

    (1) check check DB connectivity - according to your type of database via ODBC

    (2) check the vpxd.log file and capture the symptoms of failure (focused on mistakes just before the closing msg vCenter service)

    (3) search DB size values and details of free space

    (4) is it any change password next to DB? If so update via command-line vpxd.exe

    http://KB.VMware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalID=1006482

    (5) if the troubleshooting DB is clear - so focus on components vCenter as corruption of the inventory service

    (6) Finally the permissions on the folder of installation of vCenter

    vCenter 5

    (1) check check DB connectivity - according to your type of database via ODBC

    (2) check the vpxd.log file and capture the symptoms of failure (focused on mistakes just before the closing msg vCenter service)

    (3) search DB size values and details of free space

    http://KB.VMware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalID=1006482

    (5) if the troubleshooting DB is clear - so concentrate on vCenter components such as SSO

    (6) make sure SSO listening on the correct port number SQL (checking the value in DB SQL via sql management studio console) - ask your team to SQL

    (7) once all SSO components are clear then check for the inventory service

    (8) Finally the permissions on the folder of installation of vCenter

NOTE: I tried to collect most of the steps based on my experience and you can open cases with VMware for better troubleshooting steps

  • vCenter Server 5.5 requires a reboot

    Hi all

We need to restart vCenter Server 5.5, and it is running on a physical server and also hosting DB SQL on the same physical server.

Please let us know what precautions to take before restarting the vCenter server.

    Kind regards

    Ajay

You can restart the vCenter server as you would any other server system.

Once the server is online. Verify SQL service, vCenter, all are running.

As you run SQL locally, then it would be preferable to set the delayed start for vCenter server service and vCenter management services.

While the SQL service start first, then the vCenter services.

as usual, you can take backup of SQL DB or windows system state backup, but this is not a sine qua non for vCenter reboot.

Thanks for the reply! We were able to solve the problem. We had a virtual machine with orphaned files instantly (100 ++) which caused the problems. We have removed the snapshot and it worked again without any problems.

Do need me a separate license for VMware vCenter Server Heartbeat for a remote SQL Server database?

Only a single vCenter Server Heartbeat license is necessary to protect the components of the vCenter Server installed remotely, including SQL Server. A single license is also used for several UNIQUE for vCenter Server services protected authentication servers. A license is required per instance of vCenter Server.

    Thank you.

The parameter is visible in the vpxd.cfg file (located in C:\ProgramData\VMware\VMware VirtualCenter)?  It's a file in xml format.  If it is there, delete the entry associated with the parameter.  I think you must restart vCenter Server service for the change to take effect.

As always, make a backup of the existing file, test, dililgence, etc, etc, etc.

  • Upgrade a undersized vCenter Server

A vCenter server for a small farm (4 hosts and about 200 VM) has been installed originally on the undersized material and should now be moved to an appropriate host more.

I see two options, implementation of a crowd to dedicate or a virtual appliance.

    • If I select a dedicated physical host and perform the procedure on the page http://kb.vmware.com/kb/5850444, RAM-how much should I be implemented, given the same host must act as vCente and Update Manager? Based on the documentation, I'd than 4 GB, but from my experience I'm not sute 4 GB are enough: can someone please suggest good memory sizing?
    • If I select a virtual appliance, can I migrate the vCenter cuttent leave the host physical currend to the virtual appliance?
      • Given I can migrate the current vCenter to a virtual appliance, what are the disadvantages of the implementation of a virtual appliance instead of a physical host?

    • As can a last chance, I use VMware converter to convert the current vCenter to a virtual machine and install it inside the vSphere infrastructure?

    Concerning

    Marius

The steps you mentioned should work ok. After the conversion of the virtual machine, make sure you reconfigure the IP settings and remove any material about the drivers and services that have been installed for the physical host and then install VMware Tools. I still suggest stop you the vCenter Server services and SQL-Server (in the case of a local installation) on the physical host computer before you start the conversion.

About HA, vCenter is required for HA configuration. HA itself independently on the hosts, vcenter Server. While the vCenter Server is turned off the VMs system will continue to operate and some features such as vMotion, DRS,... which are initiated by vCenter Server is not available.

I guess you don't have any other feature as View Composer,... installed on the server vCenter Server!

  • VCenter Server locking user AD

I have a very strange problem with VCenter Server... it seems that it is storing my domain user name and the OLD password somewhere (probably the account I used to install it in the first place).  Since I got an AD username dedicated to use (some pwd) then reinstalled VCenter (maintenance of the database) so all services use the new AD account.  The problem is that as soon as I changed my password to AD, vpxd began locking on my account in a minute or two.  I assured that vpxd and vctomcat using the new domain user.  I assured that the login credentials/odbc connection also uses the new user... but he still has my old user SOMEWHERE  I suspect it must be in the database (or forbidden dog in an ini file) because it is not in the registry.

Anyone have any ideas?  I certainly got a few gray hairs out of it.

Did you by chance recorded Update Manager, converter, or any other plug-ins with vCenter vCenter service using your AD account?

You have a session of Terminal Server inactive or disconnected on the vCenter Server services that you connected before , you have changed your password?
