vCenter Server Setup - 2 ESX host

Hi all,

I'll put up a very small virtualized environment, and I am

looking for some advice, so I can get it hopefully implement the best

way!http://www.veeam.com/forums/images/smilies/icon_cool.gif

Here are my planned layout:

Site:

-1 Server ESX 4.0 U2

-This server hosts our virtual machines in production, on 5 virtual machines of Windows Server 2003 total

Off site (connected via private WAN circuit)

-1 Server ESX 4.0 U2

-This server stores our backed up (using Veeam) VMs and is used as a failover in case of emergency

My question:

Which physical server should host the virtual machine with vCenter on it?   I prefer the

offsite one of free resources on the ESX Server hosting our production servers.   Are there problems with it?

I personally would go there breast on-site environment for better performance, you can always plug on the vCenter server on your off-site location in case of a failover.  I doubt that the load on the vCenter server will be ideal for just two hosts, so I worry that too.

  • How to find VCenter which manages the ESX host

    Hi all

Is it possible to query ESX host using API to determine if it is autonomous or managed host and if it's a managed - what VCenter (name, IP address) actually runs it. I know it's easy to VCenter query to find all the hosts its handles, but I need to go the other way.

    Thank you

Yes, you can query for the http://vijava.sourceforge.net/vSphereAPIDoc/ver5/ReferenceGuide/vim.host.Summary.html managementServerIp if defined, then it is managed by a server vCenter Server, this is the only information on the vCenter Server and assuming you have DNS, you can get the FULL of the IP domain name

  • [HELP] SMV disappeared after restart of the host - 5.5 ESXI, Vcenter Server to the same host

I restarted the ESXI using classic Vsphere Client. Now, all virtual machines have disappeared. I tried to connect with Vsphere Client and workstation and the list is empty. I can't access the Vcenter server since it is a virtual machine that resides in the home.

The data store is a local disk. The data store is still there and the amount of disk space used is correct. I don't see the virtual machines in the inventory. I have re-installed ESXI 5.5, refreshed of store data and what not, there is nothing there. I am freaking out and don't know what to do.

EDIT: I am able to navigate the data store manually by creating the new virtual machine and select the existing virtual machine following this guide but I'm not sure what is the reason for which the files would be missing or corrupt

    http://techhead.co/VMware-ESX-how-to-easily-recreate-a-missing-or-corrupt-vmx-file/

When you browse the data store you see the virtual machine and their records?

If you see the virtual computer files, you can open the folder, right click on the .vmx file and select Add to the inventory. who will get your VM in the inventory.

  • Will there be traps to vCenter Server installation on a host in a cluster that is already managed by another server vCenter Server?

I guess that the first answer, I'll be back will be; Why?

Our Organization has decided that the team of UNIX and the Windows team cannot share a single server vCenter Server that manages the environment. This is why the Windows team has offered a virtual computer in which we installed vCenter Server and then we can create our environment from there.

Yes, I already read the doco on the creation of a virtual machine via the Client vSphere on an ESXi host we manage already. It's a viable option, but server 2008r2 should again be a picture they have made.

I watched the vCenter Server appliance for linux, but from what I can tell that would be too small for our environment and is not supported for Symantec Appha.

Yes, it would be nice if we could all play nice, but mgmt don't we have to so that's where we are.

The ideas and concerns would be useful...

    Thank you!

I see - it's just an unusual set of circumstances. As long as the virtual machine has network connectivity, it should work. It would be really no different than having a physical server with vCenter running on it.

  • Best method to move vCenter VM to another ESX host?

Update Manager has refused to allow us to stage an update for our ESX host our vCenter VM running on. So we have to move the other host our vCenter ESX just update this ESX host. But as we use vSphere Standard that does not come with vMotion and storage vMotion, we must stop vCenter and make a manual transfer.

Did you guys a better method to do that in order to copy files from local storage ESX VM vCenter to the PC running the VI Client on and then copy the file vCenter VM from the PC to the local storage of the other local ESX storage? Because we do not have a usable for the moment SAN storage.

BTW, we tried Storage vMotion with the year evaluation license last to move vCenter and it failed.

We use mainly use the converter for the conversion or 'movement' of VMs from one region to the other because it is a GUI based process.  We have quite a few movements/conversions per week, so we have standardized on the converter.  If we have problems with converter (several failures, etc.) we will perform a dorsal scp of the actual VM files.  I agree that this method is faster, but in our case, we did not want to open the console for jobs like that, it seemed a more dangerous process from the console (deleting files etc...).  We used the converter to convert physical movement to virtual, virtual virtual clone, convert virtual from one version to another (workstation to esx for example).  I also like that the sysprep process can be automated in the process, but also some virtual machine configurations.  If we say PCS had a virtual machine to another location and we created a clone in the new location, we would have to scp, starting the virtual machine and then treat the sysprep (Windows) and rename, configuring ip etc...

  • Add vcenter - I see all esx hosts too?

    Hello!

I added our vcenter at VMAs, but when I do a 'vifp' mailing lists I see only the vcenter. Should I see all the ESX servers managed by the vcenter too or have to manually add all ESX host?

You must add'em manually, or search for scipt to do.

  • vCenter is virtual server - how to upgrade ESX host?

Our vCenter server is a virtual server.  I've been thinking how to run update manager on the host ESX, vCenter is sitting on.   The only thing I can think of is to use the VMware Converter stand alone app and move the vCenter server to another ESX host and then start vCenter / Manager Update on the new ESX host to update the original ESX host.

    Is there an easier way?

you have a shared storage?  If so, go to the host computer running the vCenter VM on, turned off, make a note of the data store that it is, remove the inventory, go to another host, browse the data store, find the vmx file, right-click "add to the inventory.

.. .or you can use VMware Converter to move the VM vCenter.  Another way would be to turn off the VM vCenter and do the upgrade using the CLI interface.

  • Cannot add the ESX 6.0 host to vCenter Server 6.0

OK, I'm testing laboratory a vsan 6.0 cluster.

I have my running 6.0.0 esx hosts and vcenter server is 6.0.0 also.

I have the services platform on a virtual machine and vcenter on another. I was able to create a data center, then a cluster below.

Then I went to try to add a host to my group and I get this error...

Failed to contact the specified host (hostname\IP). The host may not be available on the network, may have a network configuration problem, or that the management on this host services may not respond.

Per this KB: KB VMware: Add a host VMware ESXi/ESX from VMware vCenter Server fails

I confirmed that my vcenter server and platform services server can see all esx hosts. From the vcenter server, it can ping the host esx and PuTTY can access all of them. I even installed the client and it can connect to all esx hosts. I used the netbios name, IP and FULL domain name and they all work.

I have only a single subnet, so this isn't a problem. DNS resolution works in all areas of both sides, vcenter esx hosts and host esx to vcenter.

    I am quite puzzled.

OK, after working with VMware on this issue, I think that I thought about it.

All my hosts are DL360 G6 servers.

My hosts are run the same build «VMware-ESXi-6.0.0-2494585-HP-600.9.2.38-Mar2015.iso» ESX Downloaded from HP.

All buildings are in trial mode.

After placing a call to VMware, they had me build some ESX VM, the services of the platform and the vcenter VM on an ESX host. We suspended because it took all day to go upward.

Once I woke up all the parts (sql server, esx vm, server platform & vcenter) in virtualization nested, I created my data center, then Cluster then added the ESX host.

The hosts added properly, no error. Then I remembered when I installed ESX inside a virtual machine, I am angry that the iso, I had the habit of HP does not work in my VM nested due to virtualized hardware.

Then a fire came into my head. We will rebuild all of the physical cluster but NOT use the CV provided the iso file but use VMware provided iso file "VMware-VMvisor-Installer - 6.0.0 - 2159203.x86_64.iso".

I did it today. I have rebuilt all hosts with the provided iso file VMware ESX...

Spun SQL Server vCenter, service platform, all VM VM VM you need. My AD & DNS VM are on another server, so he has been upwards all the time.

Connected to the web interface (yuck!).

    Created my data center...

    Created my Cluster...

    Add all my Cluster hosts.

    All of this worked!

Therefore, if you encounter the same problem, I'm plan to generate your with the provided iso file VMware ESX hosts and try it. In my case, the provided HP iso file didn't work properly for me.

I also downloaded the iso file of HP 2 other times to make sure and do a validation test and it did the same thing.

  • Virtualize vCenter and patching ESX hosts

I have a host two cluster HA with VSphere Essentials Plus, so no vMotion. (I know... good budget restrictions). It's a whole new infrastructure, so I only have a VM... my vCenter server running on host 1 (config) supported in a small size like mine environment

I use VUM patch my ESX host that requires that the guests of had no VM and be in maintenance mode.

The problem: How can I migrate my virtual vCenter server to my other host in order to set the host mode of maintenance and patch 1 (requires a vCenter runs).

My thought: two guests can see the LUNS for the vCenter server. I think I can go into host 1, power off the virtual machine and then remove from the inventory. Then, I'm going to host 2, browse the store of data LUN and ADD it to its inventory. Is this correct? If so, what file in the data store can I connect to the host (vmx, vmdk, etc.)

    Thank you.

Yes, it will work, but you will need to attach the base to a host at a time line.  You would add to inventory the .vmx

    Or use the command line

  • Change of host and domain name ownership virtual vCenter Server... issues to know?

Looking to change the name and domain membership of our vCenter server v4.0 virtual host\system to harmonize them with the rest of our servers and make it consistent with our security policy.  Are there things I should be aware to allow migration of fluids before, during or after the change of name and the field?  The vCenter server is a unique system that hosts all the necessary services and applications for vCenter, so there is not a second box that he speaks for something out of control two ESX servers for the cluster on which it resides.

Yes... Especially in vSphere where there is no license server is all the function key.  I don't foresee any problems.  But if you use a license server may want to change your license IP source if it is not already.

You can also simply restart the vpx on your ESX host agents if you see weird problems

  • VCenter Server replacement

I have two servers to ESX 4.0 running without connection to a server vCenter Server and nobody here knows anything about what happens, they use Vshpere Client to log into the ESX host individually to manage their vm I loaded vshpere Server on a member server down. I try to add the ESX host and received this message:

The host is already managed by IP address: x.x.x.x only the vcenter server can manage this host. If you manage to add the vCenter server host, the host will lose its connection to its original vCenter server. Are you sure you want to continue?

I have not had a chance looking for this and I don't know what will happen to the current host, if I leave.

-Will be the closure of the ESX host?

    -J' I lose functionality?

-Is their a better way practical to add the ESX host to the new server vShpere?

Any ideas will be greatly appreciated!

Welcome to the community - at some point this host was managed by a vCenter server - and very well may still be.  Have you tried ping this IP address? Did you try the score vSphere client to the IP address and see if you can connect to this server vCenter? -of what this looks like is that the host can be managed by a vCenter server - if it is not no problem adding the host of your existing environment.

you will not be arrested the ESXi host.

You shouldn't lose perfect as long this license does not charly-

The way you go about adding your host is the correct methid-

  • Problem migrating Vcenter server from the old cluster to the new cluster?

    Hey guys,.

Just came across this situation, and I don't know what to do. I pass my vcenter server older glomerulus with hosts of esx4.0, to a more recent cluster with hosts of esxi4.1. The material of host machines are different generations, and vmotion don't migrate vcenter because of the cpu sets between cluster mismatch. If I could turn off the virtual machine and migrate it would work, but since it's my vcenter Server I can't do.

Should I restore it on the new cluster?

    Thanks for the suggestions/tips

    Kevin

Connect directly to the ESX host using your client vsphere, vCenter vm shutdown, vCenter remove inventory, then go to the new host, browse the data store on the vCenter vm is, and add the vCenter Server inventory.

This assumes that the same storage is presented to both hosts.  If this isn't the case, you will need to use winscp or something similar to copy the files from the virtual machine.

  • Basci question with vCenter server & ESXi 4.1

    Dear all,

A question really of entry level. Currently, we have a production system works as shown in the picture. High availability has been configured in the VirtualCenter server. My question is if the power of host01 has been cut, SERVER01 Virtualcenter Server & Application (the two are running) cannot yet migrate to host02. In other words, does Virtualcenter for HA after completing the configuration? Or is there a special setup for this kind of solution within the Cluster.

    Thank you!

HA has been configured correctly and works correctly, it should not matter if the vCenter server fails. The hosts are smart enough to work when there's a problem via exchange of pulse on their management network. To answer your question, the virtual machines running on host01 must be restarted on host02...
