ESX Server on an ESX host, for training purposes

Hi all

For application of training, I would create two ESX hosts but with a limited hardware, in fact, I have 1 good server and this attitude is soft and I was wondering if there is a way I can install a second ESX Server on top of one as a virtual machine, it's just for training purposes.

Any advice would be great,

Thanks in advance,

Cool, thanks for the useful

  • You can create a view that filters (ESX host) Linux machines on the view of the Infrastructure?

    Hello

We have recently implemented Foglight and VMware plugin. As part of the VMware plugin, Foglight pulls in all the Linux VM machines including the ESX host. Our team of Linux only manages the running redhat Linux hosts. They fail the ESX VM guest. That said, is there a way to create a view that shows only the hosts running redhat Linux?

For example the view of rail infrastructure below contains 88 Linux machines, but nearly half of them are ESX hosts for our Linux team would not see all these. Is it possible to filter these?

    Any help is appreciated.

    Thank you

The easiest way would be to create a personalized, pair it with Infrastructure and then create a dynamic management component.  This will help create you a rule for "All hosts" where you can find just the hosts that are not of the ESX host and run Linux.

    The query would be:

    detail.topologyTypeName! = "VMWESXServer" & os.longName like «% Linux»

  • New-VIPermission to root ESX host

EMC ControlCenter requires a local account on the ESX host for the discovery. To do this, I need to create a permission at the level of the host root.  I can do this with New-VIPermission-entity (Get-VMHost), but permission it creates is broken somehow. It works, I can log on, but the entity is clearly wrong.

The fault becomes apparent if I try to remove the permission: an error (if I used PowerCLI or MISTLETOE)

    • The EntityID for permission to the root is ha-folder-root of the folder

    • The EntityID for the created permission as above is HostSystem-ha-home

    • The entityID for a permission created using the GUI is ComputeResource-ha-calculation-res, file-ha-folder-root, HostSystem-ha-host ResourcePool-ha-root-pool

Which entity should I proceed to New-VIPermission to create a valid clearance at this level?

    Try this

    $authMgr = Get-View (Get-View ServiceInstance).Content.AuthorizationManager
    $entity = Get-Folder ha-folder-root | Get-View
    $perm = New-Object VMware.Vim.Permission
    $perm.entity = $entity.MoRef
    $perm.group = $true
    $perm.principal = "ControlCenter"
    $perm.propagate = $true
    $perm.roleId = ($authMgr.RoleList | where {$_.Name -eq "ControlCenter"}).RoleId
    $authMgr.SetEntityPermissions($entity.MoRef,$perm)

    Worked for me.

I have a big problem with the permissions on the virtual machine.

Due to the fact that I created a new VC, I want to spend the ESX host for the new Victoria Cross. No problem, but it the individual permissions for VM to disappear.

Well, I'm looking for a script powershell read/grouping, the name of the virtual machine and the permission is assigned (like the tab authorization VC). After the removal of the host, I would like to add the permissions to the virtual machine.

If you want to only read permissions for virtual machines in a specific data center do you it like this

    $serviceInstance = get-view ServiceInstance
    $authMgr = get-view $serviceInstance.Content.authorizationManager
    $report =@()

    # Read and list all permissions for VMs in Datacenter

      foreach($perm in $permissions){
        $row = "" | Select VMname, Principal, Role, Group
         $row.VMname = $entity.Name
         $row.Principal = $perm.Principal
         foreach($role in $authMgr.RoleList){
           if($perm.RoleId -eq $role.RoleId){
            $row.Role = $role.Info.Label

  • Changing the DNS server for ESX hosts?

Our network administrator will change the IP address of the DNS server.  In this way, we will change those corresponding to ESX hosts.

    We would like to know

    (1) can we change the DNS server on execution of the ESX hosts without going into maintenance mode?

    (2) under what circumstances the ESX host will do use DNS servers?

    (3) memory, we should add all the IP addresses of ESX host in the hosts file in the Service Console, where is this hosts file located at?

    Thank you

    Tony,

Use "service network restart" command to restart the network service

    Do not forget also that...

Very dependent on DNS HA, HA will not work without the correct DNS configuration. The servers ESX and vCenter server must be able to resolve the name (FQDN full) / IPs in both feel to get a working HA.

  • ESX host, as well as the NFS server?

Hi all and thanks in advance for any help.

I want to know if it is possible to turn essential a LUN on a host in a NFS for another host.

The vmkernel will allow me to share a hdd connected locally on a host to another host?

For example.  ESX1 has a 1 TB drive, ESX 2 boasts a record of 400GO.  I want to share the drive between machines as data warehouses.

The hosts are on the same domain and a fairly typical storage facility.

I want to leave the VI client manage sharing, but I need a mounting point for training and one for access to hosts.

Setup NFS on both ESX hosts will cause problems?

    Thanks in advance, once again.

I really need to know if I can just use NFS on each ESX and run it at the same time as VMware.

The short answer is no.  ESX was not designed to be an NFS server, should not be.  Thus, there MAY be servers NFS that will work, but they have compiled and built on the ESX host, which is beyond the scope of this thread, so let's say no. NFS on ESX host.

  • Mobile to a new server vCenter ESX host

    Hello.

For several reasons (including the old server vCenter 2003 x 86) I would like to move our ESX host to a new server vCenter (version 4.1 under Windows 2008 R2). Our ESX environment using HA/DRS and resource pools.

Is it possible to move the hosts to the new server without VM downtime?

I think disabling HA/DRS and then disconnect the old vCenter servers, then adding them to the new. That would be possible, or is there a better way?

And second, that things are lost that kind of operation? Data of performance and resources with Betclic, another?

    / Christian

    Hey there,

    The procedure is very simple:

    -Disable HA host monitoring

    -Disconnect the old vCenter host

    -Remove old vCenter host

-Add the host to the new vCenter Server

-You will be weather you are prompted to add all of the resources of the host with Betclic under a live of... the list resources or put all your VMS in pool root of the pole. Select them grafted in... so you can keep your resource pools. You can move the autour pools in the hierarchy on the new vCenter.

-After you have moved all of your hosts, you can activate HA host followed once again and check that the DRS has the settings you want.

You lose well obviously all performance data, but you can bring your pools of resources for the new vCenter.

  • Effects of the change of name of ESX host windows vcenter server sits

I made a change to an ESX host name and now I can not connect to the windows server vcenter is sitting on.   The vcenter sitting Windows VM on the ESX.  Now, I can not ping or you connect to the windows server.   I tried to change the hostname to return but still cannot ping the virtual Windows machine, impossible to connect with the client of the infrastructure, cannot RDP to windows VM, etc..   Is there a way to fix what broke?   Thanks for the help.

Have you tried to connect directly to the host ESX (with the vSphere Client) and change the configuration of the virtual machine and the host vCenter? How about using worms forward in DNS to get the new name to resolve the old names of servers? In this way, either name can be used to communicate with the same boxes/VM... I've done it before to other servers (not the virtual computer at the time) when we installed a new server to replace an older and got a name change (to follow the company standards). We had agents in place who wanted the old name of the server, in order to make adjustments in the system DNS has allowed these agents to connect to the new server and facilitated by the migration.

In general, I leave the host names and only once built server names vCenter. The best time to change is when you install the fresh software/OS, not at a time later than in fact. It is a good policy to have all areas...

  • Mobile vcenter server in existing farm to new esx host

2 ESX host running version 3.

1 ESX host running version 4

New vm on vcenter server machine within the current cluster

Existing vcenter server is a physical machine.

How can I move my existing to my new host ESX cluster virtual vcenter server.

In your original description I though you said "Existing vcenter server is physical machine" - so you say your vCenter server is already virtualized? If they are all machines - the esx3 2 and 4 1 under this environment vCenter esx execution? They share a common network for vMotion? Are you running vCenter 4?  If all this is true, you should be able to vMotion between ESX hosts - if they are not part of a commune vCenter environment but share common storage that Yes, you can simply turn off the virtual machine remove it form the inventory of existing cluster and then using the browser of data store to find the vmx file and add it to the inventory of the new server =

  • ESX host abandonment vcentre after re-iping in the VC Server

    Hello

We recently re-iped our virtual Center Server to merge it in our new environment and since this all esx hosts connected to keeping the abandonment of virtual Center. We followed the standard steps and have deleted the host esx environment and readded them so that they will receive the new IP server VC, but after a minute or two, the machine turns to does not. We also tried a difficulty that we found on the basis of knowledge of VMware to edit the vpxa.cfg file and change the ip address and try to reconnect it but after a while, the old ip address is reinserted in the cfg file. Does anyone know a way around this / have had this problem before and know the solution. We have logged a ticket with VMware support, but obviously, we want environmental return as soon as possible and do not want to wait for them to remember. We are on the last installation of the virtual centre and are all but one of our servers esx vsphere if it's important.

  • Can we use use DELL R610 / R710 for execution of the ESX host?

We will purchase a new server to run ESX 3.5 or vSphere.  We have new DELL servers.

We considered R610 and R710, but we see that there are only 2 PCIe slots.  As one of them be given for an image ADDITIONAL NIC card, there is only one location for HBA.   It is advisable to use a Dual Channel QLogic QLE2462 HBA.

However, it seems that the Dual Channel HBA will be a single point of failure - if it is connected to 2 different switches FC.  We would love to hear if anyone uses these DELL servers to run the ESX host.

    Thank you

Good question, I would have preferred two HBA cards. If storage fails everything disappeared. If network failure you will not have access to the outside, but the chances of data corruption is smaller.

  • Presentation of ID host ESX host LUN to the VCB Proxy Server

I have a typical scenario where I have 3 ESX servers with 3 x 800 GB LUNS in a storage group separate on a CX 310 SAN box. The host LUN., of these 3 LUN Ids are 0, 1 and 2.

I have a specific host that starts from SAN, from the same box of CX 310 SAN. At this point of time, I have no choice to use this server as a Server Proxy VCB. As far as my knowledge goes, LUNS of the ESX servers must be made visible to VCB Proxy Server, as they are presented to the ESX servers.

My question here is, as the designated Proxy VCB server is booting from the SAN, he already has a host LUN 0 to Id the logic unit number this is the start of. The Id to host ONE of the first 800 GB LUN in the ESX Server storage group is also Host Id 0. Now, if I try to make the LUNS in storage group visible on the VCB Proxy Server ESX, is there not a shock of the VCB Proxy 0 host Id and Id host ESX Lun 0? I'm confused, I don't have a test envirinment where I could try this before I could actually go forward with any solution.

My intention is to perform a backup outside LAN of the VMDK.

Any help is that this respect is very much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    (1) Yes, you can have different host for VCB then for your ESX host LUN ID

    (2) Yes, you can use the identifiers of naa, it will automatically use the identifiers of naa, no need to configure anything at all.

  • A server Vcenter 4.1.0 coexist with 5.1.1 ESX hosts

    Hello

I was planning on upgrading my VMware environment, but I just noticed that my vcenter server running 4.1.0 is enough CPU to run 5.1.

Is it still possible to upgrade my hosts to 5.1.1 so that I can use the latest etc. operating systems or this will cause my unstable environment.

    any advice is greatly appericated.

    Thank you

vCenter 4.1 can not handle 5.1 ESX hosts.

First vCenter Server must be upgraded to 5.1 and then upgrade hosts to 5.1. So that vCenter can manage the hosts in full transparency.
