Virtual RDM: mapping in the vm, VMFS folder file size

Hello

I just migrated an iscsi LUN previously managed the MS iscsi initiator (running inside a machine virtual w2k03) to ESX iscsi sw, preserving the data.

I used RDM (raw device mapping) and I had to use 'virtual' because 'physical' hanged the VM at startup of the operating system.

The iscsi LUN is 1 TB, with about 60GB used.

I noticed that on the volume VMFS file mapping for the virtual machine is about 2 GB: happen when on the iscsi LUN more space will be used? And if it goes, is there a rule to calculate how much?

I'm worried I might risk running out of space on the VMFS volume because of the mapping of RDM file...

Thank you

Guido

It's just a pointer to the original disc of RDM.   I have a few MS Cluster in my setup. For 18 GB RDM Lun he creates about 100 MB.

Thank you

  • The long text of the chain and cod file size

    In my application, I have a few static string constants that are very long. Channels will be displayed on the screen when it is administered buttons are clicked. I find that once I added these chains, cod file size has increased by 30%, which is not desirable. I expect buttons will rarely be clicked but I must have these text for display.

    Is there a better way to manage these channels so that they do not swell the cod file, for example, compress them.

    Thanks in advance.

    If you put the strings in a separate resource file as BBDeveloper suggests, you can also run them with maximum compression gzip before you add them to the project. Then after opening the file (with getResourceAsStream), wrap the input in a GZIPInputStream stream before reading.

  • Create the list of virtual machines to exclude the script through .csv file?

    Hello

    I have a script that runs all day off hours to check my VMs respect some things, like having the option to 'VM tools upgrade policy' checked. The script will export a list of virtual machines that DO NOT have this option enabled and then later to fix the problem. Now, for some specific VMS, I don't want to have the option active and want to exclude them from this review. I try to add a list of these virtual machines I want to exclude from my check script of VMTools_UpgradePolicy via a .csv file containing their names. Here's what I have:

    ##############################################
    #VMTools update during the feeding cycle - report
    ##############################################
    function Report_VMTools_UpgradePolicy {}
    $list = import-Csv "C:\VMware\PowerCLI\Scripts\EXCLUDE LIST\EXCLUDE_vmtools_upgradepolicy.csv".
    foreach ($entry in $list) {$exclude = Get-VM-name $entry. Name}
    $vms = get - Vm | where {$_.} Name - not $exclude - and (Get-View-Id $_.) {ID). Config.Tools.ToolsUpgradePolicy - eq 'manual'} | Select name
    $vms | Export-Csv "C:\VMware\PowerCLI\Scripts\REPORTS\vmtools_upgradepolicy.csv" - NoTypeInformation
    }

    The content of the EXCLUDE_vmtools_upgradepolicy.csv is as follows:

    'Name '.
    "VM1.
    "VM2.

    "VM3.

    I try to get all the virtual machines in my environment who have the ToolsUpgradePolicy - eq 'manual' (unchecked), AND which do not match any of the names on my list of exclusions (VM1, VM2, VM3). My script so far will do what I want, except that only the last entry in my list of exclusions will take into account. VM1 and VM2 will still be reported as VMs that need to be addressed.

    I'm not sure that I am taking the right approach with this, I will continue to seek a solution for what I want, but any help would be appreciated! I prefer to make my list of exclusion to a separate file, for example "EXCLUDE_vmtools_upgradepolicy.csv", because I want that other administrators to be able to just open this .csv file and add virtual machines to this list without having to touch my scripts.

    Thank you!

    Vince

    Hi Vince,.

    It is like that I think because of your statement:

    foreach ($entry in $list) {$exclude = Get-VM-name $entry. Name} -> it
    $vms = get - Vm | where {$_.} Name - not $exclude - and (Get-View-Id $_.) {ID). Config.Tools.ToolsUpgradePolicy - eq 'manual'} | Select name
    $vms | Export-Csv "C:\VMware\PowerCLI\Scripts\REPORTS\vmtools_upgradepolicy.csv" - NoTypeInformation
    }

    $exclude is a variable that contains only 1 entry., that's why you see only the last element inside. It will not be an array.

    foreach ($entry in $list) {[string []]+ $exclude = Get-VM-name $entry.} Name}

    This will fill $exclude table with entries of string that will contain the names of virtual machine.

    And when you will be comparing. I think you should use

    where {$exclude - notcontains $_.} Name - and... the rest

    Kind regards

  • virtual network card to the physical network mapping and default loadbalancing

    What Virtual Machine virtual network card is map physical NIC.

    For example.

    Load policy (default) Balancing - from the originating virtual port (it balances only outbound traffic through all the nic assigned to vswitch1 right?)

VM6.

    Since we use load balancing based on the virtual port, can two virtual map of the same virtual machine are mapped to the two physical NETWORK card I want say eth0 VM1 is mapped to the (physical nic) VMNIC0, VM1 eth1 get connected VMNIC1 (physical nic).

    It would be great if you could explain how the virtual network adapters are mapped to the physical NIC Y at - it a command or a script to the list NIC(of all vms hosted on esxi) virtual NETWORK adapter mappings physical in detail.

    Is there a way to know what virtual NIC to connect to which physical NIC

    With the virtual NETWORK adapter, you hear the virtual card inside the VM? If if and when you use several VMNIC like you, there is no visibility in vCenter (usually vSwitches, we see with Distributed vSwitches).

    However, you can use the command-line ESXTOP tool in the view 'n', for the connection between the virtual machines and the outgoing vmnic.

  • access to the network for INI files

    Hi all.

    I have an application running on four computers.  Have access to a local file server.  All five computers running Windows 7.

    The four target computers search or create an INI file to save the test data for the products under test.  Occasionally, during the trial period, we observed INI related errors.  Specifically, the software starts the error of UIETooManyFilesOpen around either the Ini_WriteToFile or the Ini_ReadFromFile functions (and rarely the UIEIOError).

    The distance between the file server and the taget machines is less than 50 feet.  I made sure that the file server does not sleep.

    Access to the machines of the target file server is resolved simply by a path mapped in the form: "X:\folder\folder\."

    Should I do something differently for this type of topology?  I have considered restructuring the software as it does all of its newspapers written locally and only occasionally writing to the file server.  But I'm not clear why this particular error would happen in the first place.

  • The file size of backup C drive

    Hello

    Running Server 2008 R2 I noticed that there is a huge difference in the size of the backup of the C drive. The only thing on the disc is the installation of the OS with standard windows services. Hourly snapshots do he goes from 30 MB to 11FR in size.

    I'm just curious to know which would cause the huge difference in file size and if there is anyway to keep this to a minimum. Drive C arouses large sets of our readers of data backup.

  • What is the best file size to create an animated logo

    I'm trying to animate a corporate lodge for a chart of the opening of a video. Can you recommend what size of files and the resolution is the best? If I can get a JPEG will apply the same specifications of file size.

    I consider opening the file in Photoshop, selecting and separating logo in layers by using the layers separately to move together as the logo of the motion.

    All your ideas and suggestions are greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance for your help.

    That's exactly how I would do it (too).

    Applications of paint have wonderful tools to bump-out parts of an image, or to 'flatten' areas (cleaning/denoising artifact jpg)...

    size/resolution: depends on the 'action', if you do not zoom in, 1920 x 1080 video hires, is good enough, if you do some z axis fun (fly Thru), a much higher res is needed.

    suggestion: If the logo contains the fonts/text or simple forms, I re - who would enact in movement. because it acts as a 'vector' = resolution independently, as in this example:

  • How to clear the contents of a file

    Hello

    I have a file that includes some characters written in it, I want to delete the file, how can I do this?

    Say that I called "LabVIEW" Word, I need to erase this word and end result should be the empty file.

    I need to replace the content by writing "OR" in the file, but when I do this I still find other characters of the word of LabVIEW.

    Thanks in advance

    There is a difference between your method and mine. My method will move the EOF marker so that it gets placed after all what I have written in the file, which in this case is the empty string. With your method the EOF marker is not moved. To perform the equivalent operation with your code, you will need to use the right to set file size after the write function to set the file size to the length of the string that you wrote in the file. Or, you can use the unique feature that I did.

    Hello

    Please could someone clarify this? I read on a few messages that if Vista SP1 is already installed then the Vista SP2 update file size should be around 40-50 MB.

    I checked manually through Windows Update > check for updates. He finds updated Vista SP2, but the file size is of approximately of 340-350 MB.

    Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

    Indicates that there should be ~ 43meg for 32-bit and ~ 60meg for 64 bit.

    It can be substantially larger depending on how many updates between SP1 and SP2 are not already installed. Microsoft partner
