Virtualization backup infrastructure

Hello

I'd like to migrate my version 5.5 virtualization infrastructure (ESXi and vCenter) to version 6.0 (ESXi and vCenter). My machines are on a SAN.

Except that before I'd like to make a backup of my existing infrastructure. is this where this is possible? If Yes, what is the best practices?

Thank you

the most important is the sql of the vcenter. close all services and sql backup through the United Nations.

then you can also make a backup of the vcenter.

If you like VDP vmware or veeam backup solution, you can just a backup of all the virtual machines...

the esx server you do not need to make a backup. in of they are installed ten minutes

You have to do the upgrade to vcenter in advance... and since the esx server...

If you want you can since und upgrade of the hardware version of virtual machines with the vmware tools...

If an administrator has all the privileges of a backup such as Veeam servers infrastructure, technically a VM could be saved somewhere, it shouldn't be, or restoration work could be done in a place where it shouldn't be, so that the virtual machines can be compromised.  As a point of reference for Vmware infrastructure, my security target level is 2 risk profile.  What should I do and how I have to go to secure backup infrastructure?

    Hello

The only way to get control is to limit what the admin account can do on the restoration. That is, anywhere read nice things, but writing in specific data warehouses. You can make and take control. In this way it is impossible to restore without going to specific locations.

  • How do the backup off-Lan with VCB

    VMware dear Experts,

We currently have a VCB backup physical server, with the help that we are taking the backup virtual environment, we manage the following scripts

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CD \program files\vmware\vmware consolidated backup infrastructure

    echo ' # VM1 BACKUP STARTED # "> > C:\Backuplogs\VM1.txt".
    echo "started at % date: ~ 7, 2% date: ~ 4, 2% date: ~ 12, 2%" > > C:\Backuplogs\VM1.txt "
    echo "Start time % time %" > > C:\Backuplogs\VM1.txt

    vcbMounter h 192.16.4.11 u bkp Pei beta@123 - an ipaddr:20.200.20.55 - r o:\mnt\BIN\VM1 t m nbd fullvm > > C:\Backuplogs\VM1.txt

    ECHO "ended at % date: ~ 7, 2% date: ~ 4, 2% date: ~ 12, 2%" > > C:\Backuplogs\VM1.txt
    echo "end time time viral%" > > C:\Backuplogs\VM1.txt
    echo ' # VM1 BACKUP COMPLETED # "> > C:\Backuplogs\VM1.txt".

    Ren o:\mnt\BIN\VM1 VM1_ % date: ~ 7, 2% date: ~ 4, 2% date: ~ 12, 2%
    pause

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

192.16.4.11: is a vCenter server ip address

    20.200.20.55: is a VM IP

o:\mnt\BIN\VM1 is a Destination SAN LUN

Once we run that batch file backup that happens on the network, now we want the backup must be done at the level of SAN with the help of the VCB server.

    Here's the scenario

    ESX:172.10.10.10

On this esx, we have a san lun is mapped by a VM1 is stored on the same, we will map the same LUN to VCB server and now the LUN source and destination that is (o:\drive which is already connected to the vcb server) are mapped to the VCB server. Now with the help of the VCB script, we need to take backup of VM1, please help me how to do the same.

    Concerning

    Mr. VMware.

In a few words, you will need to only present the VMFS LUNS to the server VCB as you said and change the "-m ndb' option '-san m. This should work if the logic unit number is presented correctly.

  • Fabric of the Admin "management of physical machines?

In the document vCAC of bases and Concepts, in the fabric of the configuration infrastructure (pg 23 in pdf format), it is said that "in addition to manage resources and physical machines computer in a group of fabric, fabric admins too...» "

Which means that the admin of fabric manages physical machines?  What phyiscal machines?  The ESX host of the backup infrastructure of the tissue group they are in charge of this talk?  Is any aspect of management in the vCAC UI?

This means that the machines that are configured for physical use. With the help of endpoints such as Cisco UCS, Dell and HP (bare metal servers).

These machines can be added in groups of fabric such as virtualized resources. It depends on what you want to with the provision, it can be any OS, including ESXi.

Maybe you get on partner central.  Is there a such Kit for vSphere 5 as well?

The only thing I see is 'VMware vCloud Plan & Design Service materials '.

which focuses on vCloud Director and senior level management tools.  It seems that it would be good material overall about VCDX design.  Someone at - it info on where he went in vsphere 5?

    Thank you

Connect to partner Central, and then look under the "Sales" tab  Then find the 'Solutions Enablement Toolkits'.  Then, look under "Infrastructure Virtualization Library."  "VMware vSphere Plan and Design Service delivery Kit.

belongs to the library of Infrastructure Virtualization.  However, only some partners have access to

There are 5 parts to the library of virtualization Infrastructure and the

SET is one of them.  You don't get all the 5 pieces automatically just to have a central account of the partner.  Your business must have a certain status of partner and have the jurisdiction of "Virtualization of infrastructure" before you will be able to download

"VMware vSphere Plan and Design Service delivery Kit.

However, if your company does not have the legal status to be able to download it, visit this link:

There is a word called "vSphere architectural design" document  This is the specific document in the

  • Virtualize cluster backup SQL Appassure

We have a two-node SQL 2008 cluster is currently being backed up with Appassure (at the time the two physical nodes and SQL instances). We will upgrade the cluster to SQL 2012 but I want to first establish a virtual test environment in Hyper-V and perform the upgrade here.

For autonomous systems, it is easy to take a point of recovery and export to a Hyper-V virtual machine.

But this isn't an option for the points cluster node recovery, I'm only given the choice to 'Move up' or 'Restore', not 'export '.

How would I go to do this?

    Hi Olias88,

Dell AppAssure Core not support export nodes of cluster with cluster volumes. Export will be disabled for these types of clusters (with shared volumes\cluster of cluster volumes).

    Thank you

  • How to: installing vsphere Hypervisor on the same server I want to virtualize

    Hi all

Sorry if this question is answered somewhere else.  I've searched high and low and that you can't find an answer.

I have a physical server I want to virtualize and preparation for some additional virtual servers.  I installed the converter, but it seems to an existing VMware host to copy the image.  ... and since I can't install hypervisor until the virtual image is taken, I'm stuck... Can someone tell me what is the best way to do this?

    Thank you in advance.

    Shane.

I would setup vConverter on the machine that has enough space to hold a copy of this server.

1 Select the Type of Source powered on the machine.

    2. Select the type of Destination such as Vmware Workstation.

    3. install the hypervisor.

    4. run Vceonerter new Select Source as Vmware Workstation or other virtual machines.

5 Desitnation Vmware virtual machine infrastructure.

Make sure that you have a backup of the physical server.

  • How to virtualize an environment.

I was invited to attend a sort of small business on its IT infrastructure on a tight budget and have decided to virtualize - wonder if someone here may be able to help with a few questions?

The infrastructure in question is small (< 200 users, 3 DCs x, 1 x e-mail server, a SAN, few servers app - basic systems of maybe 20) and a total mess (backups sloppy and often failing with various solitions, critical applications running on old desktops based on P4 WinXP, pieces of string, box of frogs, etc.). All this needs standardization, travel on reliable and redundant kit.

    This solution seems simple:

    1. buy a reliable (but not expensive - didn't need to be much more if we consider the environment) Server compatible

    2 install ESXi on it

3 make images of each of the physical to use as ESXi virtual machines servers

    4. Turning off every server physical in turn and put the new instance of the virtual machine of it

    5. remove the old physical servers and run everything on the new virtual instances

    6. If you want to take pictures of each of these servers at regular intervals and to have these images saved on a remote server.

    My questions are:

    1. can anyone recommend a cheap (~ £1,000), a reliable server for this project?

    2. ESXi installation is normally trivial, it done a few times before - no questions here.

    3. What is the best way to virtualize a physical box using free software (ideally)? VMConverter?

    4. once the image is created, I can send this to a computer ESXi host computer running vSphere and download on the data store, so I did not really questions.

    5. How can I set up as virtual machines? Simply create a new virtual machine, mount the image of vmconverted, and then start?

    6. This is where I'm stuck, really. What is the best way to create these VMs backup images and these backups can be sent to a remote share (ideally on the SAN) or an external device?

I don't know that these questions had been asked in 1 001 times before, it's a simple project - virtualize a small cluster of servers on ESXi, then have some backup images remotely stored so that if the ESXi server fails, I can retrieve the server images, build another box of ESXi and mount these images on the new server quickly.

I have worked with VM, a little before, but never had to systematically plan and implement a complete solution, so I'd like to know if I forget something obvious.

    All comments would be welcome.

    1. we have been using Dell R415, seems the cheapest decent host that we can find these days.

    3. I always use standalone converter, it works well.  I often suck down some services to operate just fine.  As SQL services ect... ect...

5 simply browse. you the data (configuration, storage) store and do a right-click on the .vmx file and choose Add to inventory.  But in reality Stand Alone works very well on the LAN converter and the virtual machine is usually ready to power.   First thing?  Install the VM tools on it, then you will need to futz with the network settings, some to access lan with the virtual machine.

    6. can't afford a full blown backup solution?   I thnk VCB always works in the latest versions of ESXi.

  • First-aid time virtualization

I don't know if this is the right place for this, but here goes:

I manage the IT infrastructure for a small business (a total of 18 employees) which is quite heavy he needs. All of their servers are about to go out of warranty and are quite old (4-6 years depending on the server). Currently, nothing is virtualized, and I plan to change that. My experience of virtualization is pretty minimal. If I use the wrong terminology, I apologize in advance. I hope I can explain clearly.

I have two machines Dell R710 (2 x E5620 2.4 Xeons w/24 GB RAM each) ready to go. But I'm not sure some license needs for my plan.

My plan was to run ESXi and vSphere? (not sure of the difference) on each server and split then virtual servers between the two machines to balance the load better than I can. My plan was to use the free ESXi 4.1 or vSphere Essentials Kit for this. I hope for some advice on which way to go. The cost of the Kit of Essentials is not exorbitant for a small office, so I'm okay with that.

I also need a way to back up both machines to a NAS, with the hope that if a machine experiences a catastrophic failure, I can restore the virtual servers on the other machine and be back running with minimal loss of data. I read somewhere that in order to access the VM backup solutions from 3rd party that I would need to purchase a form any vSphere license.

Already, we have Backup Exec 2010 with license for Exchange and SQL and was considering the VMware agent as well. But it is quite expensive and I can't say that I am very happy with my experiences of Backup Exec to date.

Is it reasonable or free 3rd party alternative, or is there a VMware solution for my needs?

And can we see glaring holes in my plan?

    Thank you!

The ghetto script is very easy to use. You can download the vMA http://vmware/go/vma (VMware Management Appliance), it includes command line tools for managing ESXi. It is also a good place to put it and run the ghettoVCBg2 script. You can also download the VMware for Windows command line tools. Use the link provided on the connection through the web to your computer host ESXi. An advantage for the script, it's that you can run the backup virtual machine directly from a NAS device.

  • Virtualization of servers of very large files

    Hello world

As the subjects that I found on this topic are quite old and advanced capabilities of ESX, I create a new.

We are now virtualize most IS infrastructure, on ESXi servers connected to the SAN storage with Enterprise Plus licenses.

In the list of servers, we have 5 major plysical Windows file servers, with millions on the files for 2 to 5 terabytes of data according to the server.

Technically, we could create several large 2 TB vmdk files and use the Disk Manager Windows agregate volumes.

Backup of all servers is accomplished using Veeam Backup and replication, to quickly perform a full backup and restore of servers (current solution is TSM, and a complete restoration of the largest server is estimated at one week that we use only redundant backups of files).

However, if it is technically possible, we have not any idea of stability and performance.

    Someone knows the server virtualization?

Even if VMware support this virtualization, it's a recommended solution?

You will encounter some limitations to us?

We have other alternatives to replace physical servers (for example before boxes NAS connected to SAN one allowing the equivalent functionality to windows, such as advertisements and VSS integration for users), but if possible, we would prefer to keep VMware solutions to virtualize servers.

Thanks for any information on your experience.

    David Druard

    Andrew M says:

If you really need a volume is greater than 2 TB disks dynamic comments is so in your case, the only solution.

Don't forget to take the vmdk of LUNS in the same RAID Group (just to not add physical dependence).

    André

I agree, however, an alternative is to mount points can be used to "Extend" the file system by mounting a file that points to another logic unit number in the file existing within the OS System.

    Hello

I have 1 cluster under which 5 ESX4 are configured with HA, DRS, vmotion, everything is available on the assessment

2 > I wanted to take a backup of vCenter database, so if there is no mess I can restore it, how to do?

    Please guide.

    Thank you

    Mustafa Rashid

    Hello

1 > I can see in the inventory--> networking network, there is just 'VM network', I wanted to know is ths

"the virtual machine network", a pipe which is combined of all servers in ESX4 5?

Not at all. This means that you have on each host a vSwitch with a labeled portgroup VM network. There is also the concept of the distributed virtual switch IS a switch on all nodes.

    "pipes" are not really here.

2 > I wanted to take a backup of vCenter database, so if there is no mess I can restore it, how to do?

SQL, make a SQL backup then you can restore said backup if necessary. Standard SQL.

  • Veeam backup or vmware consolidated backup?

    What is the best?

    Thank you

    RJ

We will all live a virtual life...

    Hello

Certainly VCB is not as rich in features as Veeam but you can compare the two, they take data outside the ESX host and place it on a backup server. You should necessarily not a script to do this with VCB, but it will certainly help! For environments really small hand vcbMounter orders will pass data of the ESX host to your backup host. Then you will need a (even when using Veeam) mechanism to move the backup to a kind of Ribbon, blu - ray or a another backup device.

Granted in some cases Veeam will also make use of the VCB to make its backups and Veeam combined with VCB is a pretty good combination.
