Vista product key in use. Code 0xC004C003

I hope someone can advise as Microsoft have been pretty useless in my opinion.

I have a foreign boy to stay with me at the moment. His English is not perfect, so he asked me to try to sort it out with all the phone calls etc.

He has a Toshiba Vista home premium laptop. A few weeks back he sees at a computer store that he has had a problem & thought that it may have a virus & I understand that they reformat the drive.

Everything was fine until last night when he got the screen message Windows needed to be activated, but when we tried to do it would not accept the key that came with his edition of Windows. It says product key is in use & gave a code 0xC004C003. Down in the corner, he said something along the lines of the copy of windows is not not authentic, but it doesn't have a legitimate key that came with the Windows installed when he bought the computer.

I seem to have spent hours on the phone with Microsoft yesterday & this morning gave me a new key to try but that no longer works. Then I learned by a very steep call center worker (which again seems to be outsourced in India) that they are not technicians so I need either call Microsoft Technical support, which charge something like £50 or more when helping with technical problems or that the owner of the computer has to contact Toshiba.

As all of its documentation of the computer is back in Saudi, where he bought the computer shortly before coming to the United Kingdom, I don't know how helpful to make meetings Tobishba themselves to aid would be.

If someone could give advice I would be really grateful, even if it's to say that the only way to solve this problem is to contact Toshiba or help sky, Microsofts scammed technical assistance service.

I spent almost all day trying to find a solution for him, phoning & searching the net etc think that perhaps the only thing for him to do is to go back to the store of the computer where the laptop has been reformatted, but it's miles away on the other side of London, & I'm not sure that this is the solution to his problem.

Hello Sal

You are right. Each Toshiba laptop comes with preinstalled operating system and the clean image of Toshiba recovery facilities. This image should not be enabled.

So all that needs to be done is OS install with the supplied media.

    Hello

You can use this Recovery Partition to reinstall Vista to his new condition with the right edition of Vista.

This recovery partition was photographed on your hard drive by HP during the manufacturing of the factory.

You press F11 on startup to start the process of recovering back to factory settings.

Here is the information about HP.

If the recovery partition is damaged, you can buy HP's Vista recovery discs for a small fee.

If HP's Vista recovery disks, you may need to try this instead:

You can also borrow and use a Microsoft Vista DVD, which contains the files for the different editions of Vista (Home Basic, Home Premium, Business and Ultimate) must be installed. The product key on your computer / Laptop box determines what Edition is installed.

Other manufacturers recovery DVDs are should not be used for this purpose.

And you need to know the version of 'bit' for Vista, as 32-bit and 64-bit editions come on different DVDs

  • Upgrade Windows 7 - Vista product key.

I bought a desktop computer.  When you buy windows 7 it was only a month, that is why the case included a free upgrade from Windows Vista to Windows 7.

I need to re - install Windows to solve several problems with the PC.

I have the DVD Windows 7 Home Premium and the product key.

I don't have the media or Windows Vista product key.

I'll be able to directly install the upgrade DVD/key? or do I have to install Vista first?  Will I need a product key for Vista?

    Hello

When you bought your desktop computer, you had Vista on it.

You have received a Windows 7 Upgrade disk and license.

Reinstall Vista > making the Windows 7 upgrade.

You need OS eligible to upgrade

You should have a COA sticker with the product key Vista on this subject in the case of funds.

If you have lost it, order the recovery of the manufacturer media.

Some manufacturers have more available Vista recovery disks.

If this happens, you may need to try this instead:

You can also borrow and use a Microsoft Vista DVD, which contains the files for the different editions of Vista (Home Basic, Home Premium, Business and Ultimate) must be installed. The product key on your computer / Laptop box determines what Edition is installed.

  • Change the product key to use COA OEM during the product upgrade

I found the kkid106 question "can I use a product key Windows 7 OEM to a retail facility.

But as it is not my particular case, I want to be sure and make the issue.

The question is on a clean install of Windows 7 Home Retail using Windows 7 OEM Home.  My case is not a clean install.

I have the following two scenarios:

Scenario 1. A computer with Windows XP Pro OEM who got the original damage.  I have an Image backup which I bring to a Destination with Windows 8 OEM computer.  I get a retail upgrade of Windows 8.  I restore the Image to the destination computer, and then upgrade old XP Pro OEM with retail upgrade to Windows 8.  Technically I find myself with a computer without a license since the upgrade come from an OEM from another computer.  Now, I change the product key by using the Destination COA OEM computer to make a licensed computer.

This scenario is correct.  Can I validate the license online or by phone?

Scenario 2. A computer with Windows XP Pro OEM who got the original damage.  I have an Image backup which I bring to a Destination with Windows 8 OEM computer.  I have an Upgrade download Windows 8 without product key.  I restore the Image to the destination computer, and then upgrade old XP Pro OEM upgrade download to Windows 8.  I find myself with a computer without a license, because the upgrade is unlicensed and comes from an OEM from another computer.  Now, I change the product key by using the Destination COA OEM computer to make a licensed computer.
