VMAP eliminates ESXi and VCenter Lab installs, thanks to greedy Pirates.

I run a class of Virtualization Technologies. My college has acquired a subscription of VMAP mainly to use to set up our training lab.

We run 18 servers Dell T110 with 16 GB of memory.

We also run 18 desktops Dell with 8 GB of memory.

Here's how I run the class of 16 weeks (used to):

Each student would be:

  1. Install a version of eval of 180 days of Windows 2008 R2 on a bare desktop.
  2. Install Workstation 8 on the desktop. Introduce students to the concepts of virtual machines. Workstation is ideal for this.
  3. Bring their own USB 16 GB class and install ESXi 5.0 on it running on the server.
  4. Install the VCenter Server (and client) directly on the desktop.
  5. Create a VM virtual host two additional ESXi
  6. Create an another VM of the VCenter Server virtual appliance.
  7. Start creating virtual machines, Clusters, ect.

The point is, each student will learn a wide range of features in VSphere. Each student has at least THREE ESXi licenses and need TWO licenses of VCenter Server.

At the end of the class, the laboratory is demolished (uninstalled all the software).

The VMAP subscription that my college bought recently announced that Install lab licenses are more offered for VCenter or ESXi products.

Now, I only use the version of 60 days?

Is there any way around this?

I could create 50 or so "student users" and get the individual keys for each. I would then have to use each key individually on all hosts in the laboratory.

Students enrolled in this class were very happy to try the VSphere environment, something they could not do at home.

Why not just offer the installation lab keys that have a duration of 1 year. This woul be more long enough for any semester length class.

Or VMware wants to only close the non academic 'partner' classes offered. The "certified" classes use the same account VMAP of Kivuto however. How do they make their laboratories?

Other classes in this direction have found that the best way to run the class is to one) ask students to work in pairs or larger teams, so that they can share their licenses; and (b) have them download license keys themselves, as you suggest. They don't necessarily three license keys for ESXi each however, given that each license key has an associated CPU count (2 or 4, depending on the product) which can be used to activate the host several processors. Note that we recently made vCloud Suite available to students in addition to vSphere, which in the past was only available for teachers and staff, so there are various options for which products the students use in class.

Happy to discuss this further with you help succeed your class.

  • ESX, ESXi and vCenter and virtual machines

Hello all - I need to re - certify my VCP this month so I decided to sit down this weekend to set up a virtual lab.  I managed to get ESX, ESXi and vCenter working all in s vm on my laptop in less than 4 GB.  I use Player version 3 for now.  I have Workstation 6.5 but I have to spend my VCP to get a key of 7 workstations and improve it.

The manual is a bit long, but here is the link if you are interested.  I'll update everything to Workstation 7 after my review.  I hope that some of you find it useful!

    Nice - Thanks for posting.

I doubt that you must update for Workstation 7 as VMplayer 3 is nothing else than a torn Workstation 7. It has the same basic functionality.

So, nothing will be different if you use Workstation

By the way - Starwind is really nice simulate a San.

Another interesting thing, that you know may not...

It is possible to assign up to 8 GB of RAM to your virtual ESXs, even if the host itself has only 4 GB of RAM.

    For this I have

    prefvmx.useRecommendedLockedMemSize = 'TRUE '.

    prefvmx.minVmMemPct = '5 '.

in the file config.ini from the host. Do not run and then

Using this trick, I was able to run 4 ESX virtual machines on my laptop 4 GB RAM running 2 k 3-32 bit host

  • With the help of ESXi and vCenter

Hi all, I have some doubts on the use of ESXi and Virtual Center.

Recently, we have set up 2 servers ESX with Virtual Center, all allowed in the Standard edition to have an available shared storage and HA.

Our idea is to set up a new server with ESXi installed for testing purposes.

Is possible to manage this server ESXi with our real VirtualCenter or we need a license? This particular server does NOT use shared storage or HA.

    Thanks for your help!

    Kind regards

    Diego

Yes, you need a license for ESXi manage VirtualCenter. You can purchase the license to the Foundation. Please see the license attached (on page 3)

  • Need help to change a creation of VM PowerCLI script to support host ESXi and vCenter

I have the below script that I created with much help from LucD - thank you! This has served me well for my lab procedures rip - replace so far. This script works when I run it against my single ESXi host when it is not connected to my server vCenter, but it throws errors when I run this script when the host is connected to vCenter and it fails to implement the controller SCSI Paravirtual. • Question of ESXi and Vcenter licenses

    Hello

I bought vcenter just now as well as some vsphere licenses, however were still about 15 older ESXi servers that I want to upgrade and manage vcenter.

However, I am a bit confused about the cost of the upgrades for my ESXi free installs to connect to vcenter.  I watched the Essentials Kit where you can buy 3 licenses but it's to connect to vCenter Essentials.

What is the difference?  I'm guessing that you can not essential home standard licenses to vCenter ESXi...

I am not otherwise interested in HA or vmotion, I just need a way to access my vCenter ESXi.

    Thank you

Essential ESXi connects to critical vcenter. for your case, you will need to vsphere Standard to be able to be managed by the vCenter.

  • HP ML115G1 and vCenter Server installation

    Hi all

Please go easy on me because it's my first time with VMware

I have a ML115G1 with 5 GB RAM and 120GB HD, installed ESXi 4.1 and have a VM of Windows 2008 Server SP2 running no problem, I want to learn vCenter Server among others and tried to install it in this virtual machine, as I quickly discoveredvCentre requires 2CPUs which are at least 2 GHz, assuming that I understand it so far and I am not , what is the best way forward for me so that I can learn Vcenter in the following environment:

1 x Windows Server 2008R2 Virtual machine with vCenter, domain AD etc.

2 x Windows Server 2008 R2 running SQL2008 and center of System Configuration Manager

2 x windows xp or win 7 clients

assuming that I have very little $ to purchase a new high spec server to deal with all this and its only in a lab environment. What is the best way to go to implement, it will be used for myself training on products above, trials of software distribution, patch deployment, management of client of windows etc.

Any help will be greatly appreciated as Im in its early days and theres a heck of a lot to!

    Thank you very much

No, it should still install - it's just the 2 GHz is recommended and if I remember anything in the Setup goes and checks the closk speed -.

  • Change the view hosts ESXi and Vcenter Ip addresses

    Hello

Because of our new zoning, we need to change the IP addresses of all our guests view ESXi as well as our vCenter server View.  Is it still possible without altering the DB ADAM that uses the view?

    Thank you

    Mooge

If your ESX hosts are added to vCenter by host name and your vCenter are added to the view by hostname that you should be able to make this change without affecting the view.

If your vCenter is added by IP, then you will have problems.

If your ESX hosts are added by the intellectual property so that you can use maintenance mode to migrate all the virtual machines on each host, remove from the inventory, then add it to the cluster using the new IP or host name. View should have no problem with what we don't reference the hosts by their host names in any sort of statically.

  • The upgrade of our guests 5.0 ESXi and vCenter Server 5 and 5.5 Enterprise Plus

We are the 4 upgrade hosts of ESXi 5 to 5.5

We add 4 more guests with own ESXi 5.5 installed

We are also upgrading our vCS 5 in the vCSA 5.5

    Using Enterprise + licenses

Question: I'm trying to understand the best way to achieve this transition.  4 guests run about 100 virtual machines and 4 guests we add are clean slates.

That's what I think... Please help me guys

    1. once the 4 new hosts are installed in the Datacenter clean running ESXi 5.5 I will deploy the vCSA ovf and register 4 guests with the Linux-based device.

    2. now, I have 4 new 5.5 ESXi hosts registered and running with vCSA 5.5 but I still have my old 4 guests with ESXi 5 and registered to the old vCS about 100 virtual machines running WIndows

    3. at this point I think stop on my older hosts 4 virtual machines and remove them from the vCenter Server inventory Windows and everything just their registration with the new vCSA

    4. Will be all my virtual machines or transferred with the hosts if I close them and put the hosts in maintenance mode?

    5. now, I should have all 8 guests registered with my new vCSA.  But the original 4 hosts have yet to be upgraded to ESXi 5.5

6 move 100 virtual machines to the new 4 hosts running ESXi 5.5 and upgraded the 4 former hosts.

    7. now, I should have 8 guests with ESXi 5.5 using the vCSA

    See you soon!

    Pretty much.

To make things easier, you can deploy the EGGS for vCSA in your current vCenter (if I remember correctly import an OVA using vCenter allows you to set certain options that should be set to the vCSA shell). After making sure that the vCSA online & configured, you can then install ESXi on all your new hosts, add them to a cluster in the vCSA and put a few trials of virtual machines on there to confirm the network setting is configured correctly. Once it's done (and assuming that the old and the new hosts use the same shared storage) you can stop the vCSA, remove it stock Windows vCS, please write it on one of your new hosts and turn on. You have now two environments (5.0 and 5.5). Next if you disconnect a host from 5.0 vCS (with virtual machines running on it), you can then connect it to the vCSA 5.5. Assuming that the vSwitchs standard networking of the exchanges that are the same name in both environments, you now can vMotion VMs between host 5.0 and 5.5 cluster. At this time, you can repeat with all remaining hosts until everything has been made the transition without service interruption. This will leave a lot of old objects in your old 5.0 vCS, but if that is getting trashed it isn't a big deal.

  • 5.1 ESXi and vCenter 5.0

    Hello everyone.

I just wanted to confirm - is it possible to add a host of 5.1 ESXi (remote) to a server vCenter ESXi environment 5.0 established? (I think I can add 5.1 to 5.1, but not of 5.1 to 5.0).

  • Do we need to buy separate licenses for ESXi and VCenter and 5

    Hello

I have confusion about the licensing model, I have 2 servers (2 socket) physical with 4 licenses of VMWARE VSPHERE 5 STANDARD 1 PROCESSOR, you can clear my doubts if I need to buy a separate license for VCenter Server and if so, which is the right one?

    Thank you

Yes, vCenter Server needs to be licensed separately (VMware also offers packaged essentials and acceleration kits). Since you already have the CPU licenses, you can either watch the "vCenter Server Foundation" license that allows to manage up to 3 guests or 'vCenter Server Standard' license without this limitation.

  • 3.5u5 ESXi and vCenter 4.0 (beta)

I use eval to 60 days of ESXi 3.5u5 and 4.0u1 versions

I'm using the beta version of vCenter server.

I have x 64 multiple hosts running ESXi 4.0 u1.  These hosts are attached to my vCenter server, all work fine no probs.

I have three 32-bit servers running u5 ESXi 3.5 I can't join without a license server vCenter (and, I guess as a license to put on this server file).  When I try to add a 3.5 on the server host, I get:

    -

    License server not configured

    -

VI3 hosts cannot be added if vCenter is allowed but license server is not configured. Configure the license server, and then try again.

I see not a download for the VI3 license server, and/or a license of 60 file days host on this server.  How to make the beta version of vCenter accept pre 4 ESXi hosts?

I'm guessing that the answer will be "use the 60 day trial of vCenter and not version beta"?

If you want to use 3.5 clients with vCenter 4.0, you will need to download and install the 3.5 license server because they use a different type of license.
