W520 BIOS 1.39

As pointed out by Harris and DXH (thanks!), BIOS 1.39 is now displayed for the W520. I wasn't expecting to see another update for the W520, but the apparent motivation is supported of Windows 8.

The question remains: 1.39 does support 1600 Mhz RAM, or are we still capped (post BIOS 1.36) to 1333 Mhz?

Why Lenovo does this disservice to its community of users? Then, if ever, Lenovo will remove this restriction?

I can confirm that the memory is always capped at 1333 MHz.

    Friends

Earlier, I had a Thinkpad W520. Looks like a powerful machine. He already started level Win 10 Pro 64 bit.

Now I tried to update the BIOS on this issue but don't know how to proceed. The current BIOS is:

    BIOS
    LENOVO brand
    Version 8BET55WW (1.35)
    Day 06/12/2011

So, it is already 5 years old. I tried to find utility to update BIOS for 64 bit Win 10 on the Lenovo support site, but not been able to find one for this model. I find one for 64-bit Windows 8, but not to win 10.

Can I use the Win 8 BIOS update utility to update my W520 at 1.42 BIOS? Or what are my options?

    Thank you

On machines like yours that were ever sold with pre-installed win10, I suggest burning to a CD and update the BIOS in this way.

  • Failure of 1.26 BIOS W520

I just got my new W520 today. The unit shipped with BIOS 1.25. I ran a few tests of comparative analysis and could not see the Turbo, so I decided to upgrade the bios 1.26.

I downloaded the bios utility and flashed the bios under Windows 7. Everything was good. Then I rebooted as the proposed utility.

Then my machine freezes on the splash screen:

    'ThankPad '.

To interrupt normal startup, press the blue ThinkVantage button.

This form takes about 6 to 7 minutes, and then the computer restarts and stuck in this form again. I tried to press the blue button, but it wouldn't get into the BIOS.

Can I force the machine to stop and restart? I'm afraid that would be detrimental to the BIOS flashing.

    Help, please!

    Problem solved...

The system finally starts after I unplug the external monitor and hard drive...

  • The limitation on the W520 with BIOS update?

    Hey everybody,

My decision was very long, and whenever I get the motivation to upgrade to a W520, I always get worried about the forums. My main concern the limitation on the battery and the blocked processor clock. Since the last update of the BIOS, is it resolved? I can handle a small limitation on battery but 800 MHz is all just ridiculous. Before that I have finally let go of my money, buy the W520 in confidence that there is always these problems? I'll have to use this machine for at least 5 years, and if I have to start with these problems, I won't be a happy camper.

    Thank you.

    Hey, J,

I think you get a view polarized the W520 on this forum. It is a solid and reliable machine. The limitation of problems have been resolved there are some revisions of the BIOS.

Yes, it is not perfect in every way. However, it is a boon to the developer of this software. Yes, I use it to do the real work.

Now that I've sung his praises, I'll do a 180 in saying that I would wait for the "W530" at this late stage of the game. This is probably only a few months at sea and can represent a significant improvement.

BTW: If you want to get one, you will get a better deal by the way for one of the pre-built reseller like Amazon or Buy.com. It is much cheaper to do it and then upgrade only to have Lenovo customize it for you.

For example, I went this route:

    Amazon W520

I saw this as low as $1360 model. You can throw in a load of RAM for not much money.

I wanted to talk, Buy.com stocks often this machine, and they have a 45 day return policy.

    There is my 2 cents.

  • W520: Speedstep does not not correctly (on battery)! (BIOS v1.26)

    Hello

Given that the main thread (here) of the Speedstep/mode was 'closed' by the Mark_Lenovo with a shocking statement (discussed here) we need a new thread to discuss the problems of official support with CPU-synchronizing.

    Here's the thing:

Intel Speedstep technology does not work as it should on my W520 (4282-W17).

    To clarify:

For my CPU (i7-2820QM) I'm on idle 0.8 GHz and 2.3 GHz frequency (free mode). So Speedstep should lift the clock of up to 2.3 GHz processor when carrots are used by a process.

    My investigations:

-My CPU clock stuck at 0.8 GHz all the time on battery (even with full load)

-The same thing happens even when I'm on AC!

We NEED a fix for this issue! My iPhone is faster in the treatment as my new W520!

    Soko

PS: For those who don't want to use mode all I have posted a solution here.

  • [W520]: who is running 32 GB of ram?

Who is 32 GB of RAM running in their W520? Can you please post the brand and model # of the RAM used?

I tried to RAM Kingston, Crucial, Corsair, and own internal Lenovo (Samsung) 8 GB of supported modules in my W520. The W520 has problems starting when "Integrated graphics" is selected (and OS of Optimus detection is disabled). It starts very well in dedicated graphic mode and Optimus. I have the latest version of the BIOS. The problem exists on Windows 7, Windows 8 and every flavor of Linux.

The problem is that as soon as the graphics subsystem is initialized in Windows or Linux, the CPU gets attached to 100% usage, the system is extremely slow and CPU fans operate at full breath. I tested the RAM and the processor in the system of another manufacturer and all is well. I believe that the BIOS has a problem (which would be supported by a lot of people having this problem) or my specific motherboard is defective. I want to see if I'm the only one to have this problem so any help would be appreciated.

This post is a continuation of a problem, I spoke in this thread: http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/W-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/W520-Intel-HD-3000-iGPU-broken/td-p/821371

  • Card nvidia, Linux Mint and W520?

    I'm on a W520 possessing a videocard of nvidia Quadro 1000 m, running Linux Mint 17 xfce (64-bit)

Recentley, I came across a situation that required OpenGL 3.3. Best I can tell, my card intel integrated can support above 3.1!

So I went to try to get the nvidia card work. Note to all the world at this point... Installation of the nvidia proprietary drivers directley Apparentley is the worst thing to do.

I went to install the drivers of bumblbee (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bumblebee) and have since been frusterated with an nvidia card not working.

I went to the cat bourdon, scourd the web for my problem, tried to re - install on a fresh USB... Nothing works.

Has ANYONE else been in this situation? What are the steps that you took to get a functional nvidia card?

Heres a dump of information from my problems. Basically, running glxgears optirun does not work.

I have no experience with anything else that Fedora works on my W520, but before installing dual boot linux partition, I turn it on discrete rule. It is a bit of annoyance to have this go in the BIOS before the OS, but it of the only way I got everything to go smooth and figures.

I just got a new ThinkPad W520 to replace my W510 and notice that I can't turn on with the fingerprint reader. My mark leads W510 is green when I opened the lid and not lit the W520. I can log on to Windows by using the fingerprint on the W520 reader but I have to turn on the power button. I compared the parameters between the two ThinkPads, and they seem to be the same. • ThinkPad W520 Win7 Bluetooth device not recognized by Windows 7

    Hi all

Just got my Thinkpad W520 4270 CTO with bluetooth installed. It was a work station BACK I installed Win 7 x 64 Ultimate on and I finally got all the drivers installed, but the bluetooth software says it is no BT device connected to my laptop. I checked the BIOS settings and confirmed that the BT is enabled. I even turned off, saved, then he helped turn. Hit the Fn + 5 combo does not trigger the light or no matter what 'Found New Hardware'. When the laptop starts first BT light flashes and the wifi led and the HARD drive activity light. I was not yet able to load another OS, but I download Arch Linux and BackTrack 5 to test to see that it is perhaps a problem with OS.

Thoughts or ideas would be useful, it seems that my Google-Fu me has missed as well.

EDIT: I realize in the sticky on the "do not update the bluetooth drivers" but I do not get my bluetooth to work at all, not even recognized by the operating system as an "unknown device".

I thought about it. It is ridiculously easy. Download the drivers for the keyboard shortcut key and install. It allow you to use the functions at the top of your keyboard, and then after reboot, press Fn + F5 and will you will get a menu to activate the Bluetooth on the operating system, then Win7 should detect and install the drivers for it, or you can download those from the Lenovo site.

I have a dual core w520, initially with 2 x 4 GB. I'm moving to 2x8gb, but 8 GB dimm fails in a slot, but not the other. Any ideas on why it's a failure?

  • Turbo boost does not work when active hyperthreading - W520

I have ignored this issue for a long time, until I've decided to try to understand and fix it. My W520 would never go beyond 2.40 GHz, I tried all the tests in the book. Manager power AC power, BIOS enabled, the max value performance in what concerns all, power settings windows too. stress tests, single thread, multi-threaded, has no importance, it has always been to 2.40 GHz or less (800 idling). After much trial and error, I found that this turbo would work properly if hyperthreading is disabled in the BIOS. The CPU module and then between 800 MHz to 3.5 GHz as it should with active turbo. Why can I not use hyperthreading AND turbo? Is this normal?

I also noticed that in the BIOS there is no option for turbo-boost. Just hyperthreading, multi-core and speedstep.

W520, i7-2760qm, BIOS 1.40, all the latest recommended updates.
