vMotion between hosts 4 ESXi and ESXi 5

I have a group of ESXi 4.x hosts connected to a vCenter Server 4.1.  I have an another 5.1 vCenter Server Management 5.1 hosts.  I want to move my hosts ESXi 4.1 in my 5.1 vCenter Server and upgrade to 5.1.

Since vCenter 5.1 can manage ESXi 4.x and 5.1 hosts in the same cluster (KB VMware: upgrading vCenter Server 5.1 recommended)

Could I add my 4.x hosts to vCenter 5.1 and put them in maintenance mode one by one and then upgrade?  I'd be able to vmotion the VMs between my 4.x and ESXi hosts 5.1?

The goal is to reduce or hopefully elimate downtime for virtual machines.

Thank you!

You can get the upgrade with no interruption of service, if you can:

(a) connect the storage 4.1 hosts FC 5.1 guests, so it is shared by all hosts

or

(b) your license allows you to storage vMotion the VMS to storage of 5.1 hosts

The normal steps would be:

-Disconnect the 4.1 hosts the vCenter 4.1

-Connect the 5.1 vCenter

-connect storage 4.1 for the 5.1 hosts or Storage vMotion the VMs on

-vMotion the VMs to 5.1 hosts

-upgrade the 4.1 hosts

  • Can we do vmotion between hosts with load balancing in network cards grouping different strategy.

    Hello

We are implementin new host in our Infra and do some vmotions between different groups. A group a host with balancing 'route based on IP hash. " Can we do Vmotion to another cluster where the hosts have different load balancing policies. In addition, if we change the policy on new hosts in furture of load balancing is loss of downtime or a package?

    Kind regards

First of all, no problem from VMs one ESX to another, they use different political Multipathing.

Second, if you use IP hash, it means you are using etherchannel (or LACP) on the physical layer - configuration/cancellation of the configuration that almost always require that the uplinks are not used by any VMs, so you have time to synchronize the physical and virtual configuration. It is not a time out, but you need to plan accordingly - all depends on your physical network capacity.

  • vMotion between hosts on different subnets

Before you start, I'm a network engineer, not a server guru, please bare with me

Is it possible to vMotion a virtual machine to a host on an IP network to another host, on a different IP network?

    Example:

Data Center 1 - 10.1.1.1/24 with VM in the 10.1.2.0/24 ESX Server

Same city, different site, binding fiber 10 GB between facilities 2ms latency

Data Center 2 - 10.2.1.1/24 in the 10.2.2.0/24 with VM ESX Server

    Scenario:

vMotion a computer virtual network 10.1.2.0/24 to the 10.2.2.0/24 network where virtual machine, on arrival on the ESX 2 data center server, now uses a IP address of 10.2.2.0/24.

Any guidance towards a white paper or a guide would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you all for your time.

vMotion is possible between hosts on different subnets, but unless your discussions presented to the virtual machines are on the same subnet, you will eventually drop the virtual machine on a VLAN different and IP addressing will fail.

There are ways around this, you could script the change of IP address / present several IP addresses of the virtual machine / or reservations DHCP to use, but you will need to ensure DNS etc. records are updated.

If you have some kind of load balancer, you could in theory balance workloads on 2 IPs hosted on the same VM, to solve the network ip address issues, although in the end, you'll want a VLAN tended to port VM coverage groups.

    Good luck

  • You can VMotion between host ESXi 4 and ESXi 4 Update 1?

I have a node 2 VMotion, HA cluster. Identical machines running ESXi 4. I want to use the patch to update 1 update. If I VMotion then update all my virtual machines on a host, the other on its own will I be able to VMotion virtual machines on the host being updated from the host not yet updated? Then update the second host.

  • vMotion between ESX 4.0 and ESX 3.5 hosts

We are planning our ESX 3.5 to ESX 4.0 infrastructure upgrade.  I understand you can vmotion VM guests from 3.5 to 4.0 hosts, however you can migrate 4.0 3.5 guest hosts.  Before you try I know that we have to vCenter Server 4.0.

Yes, vmotion is allowed between the two versions.

Just don't upgrade the comment tools and virtual hardware until you get all of your ESX hosts on 4.0

    Good luck!

  • Cannot Storage Vmotion between EMC Celerra NFS and NFS VNX

Recently we have improved our infrastructure VMware 3.5 to 5.0. Managed to migrate all virtual machines to the Esxi5.0 without any problems. More recently, we bought new storage EMC VNX 5300, set up and configured the NFS storage for the early. All the warehouses of new data related to blades and all storage pools, old and new can be found under vCenter.

Problem we have is that we can not Storage vMotion virtual machines of the old Celerra NFS for new NFS VNX stores. It comes back with the error "cannot access file VM VNX {datastore} filename '. We got a similar message appears when you try to create a new virtual machine or import an OVF on VNX new data warehouses.

We have the license of the company, with Dell M600 blades with EMC storage as mentioned above.

Thanks for your contributions, but I solved it. A bit of a 'schoolboy error', but although I had added to the VMKernel IP in the host root and read-write in the NFS export properties, I also need to add the IP address of the hosts/blades. Storage vMotion successfully in new stores VNX. THX Kem

  • Files saved to merge "Shared folder ' between host Mac OS and virtual Mac OS not opening not.»

    Hello

If I save a file in the folder "Shared" my host Mac OS machine merging, I can open it only on my host machine, but not inside my virtual machine to Mac OS.  In addition, it shows the incorrect file type in the virtual machine (just 'Document') not the actual file type.

The reverse is also true, if I record a 'Shared' file of Fusion of in my virtual machine, I can open it only on my virtual machine, but not inside the host machine.  Again, it shows the incorrect file type in the real (just "Document") not the file type host machine.

The files must be for the most part very well, because they will open in their own environment of the shared folder, but the Mac OS in the Middle against a reason any won't open them.  Suggestions?

    Thank you

Solved...  I just need to add 3-digit extensions of file names (for example, .jpg, .psd, etc.) that normally may not be needed in your own environment, but apparently are required when files are in a shared folder.

  • vMotion between versions and licenses

I have a question about vMotion in vSphere 4.1.  It is primarily on licenses, as I know technically what I'm asking, it's doable.

With the inclusion of vMotion in Standard licenses, can run a mixed environment (eg. Enterprise and Standard licenses) and vMotion between hosts with different licenses?

For simplicity, assume that the environment is running 4.1.  Although if you know, could you please indicate if it would work between versions (eg. between 3.5 and 4.1 or 4.0 and 4.1).

    Thank you.

The answer you are looking for is + 5.23.2

Yes.  As long as you have licenses vMotion on all host ESX (i), and you meet the requirements of vMotion (shared storage, CPU compatibility, network, etc.) whereas there should be no problem.  Remember that if a mixed environment of VI3 and vSphere4 hosting, do not upgrade the comment tools.

  • difference between a command ping and vmkping in hosts esxi 4.1

    Hello

I can't enter the vmkping command and the command ping when it is used in virtualization, esxi hosts, but correct me if I am wrong in my assumption

    1. the vmkernel which is the firmware if you like vsphere suite that manages all communications between the physical host computer and comments, is the hypervisor if you like, correct?

    2. the vmkernel has its own virtual ip stack that manages all vmotion, iscsi and fiber storage correct traffic?

3 Let's say I have two esxi hosts (esx1 and 2) using two NICs to uplink where vmnic0 on both esxi hosts are virtual machine port groups and the vmnic 1 is used for the port of vmkernel on esi 1 and 2.

the standard command ping ping ip addresses on both hosts of esxi vmkernel, but she would not use the internal ip stack of vmkernels to check the communication between the two ports uplink vmkernel, instead it uses the co-location host tcp/ip stack to resolve the IP address connectivity and would only check each link port communication.

by using the vmkping command, it connects esx1 host using putty for example and issues a command vmkping to ESX2 to host esx1, which uses its own tcp/ip stack of vmkernel to achieve a connection from esx2, so indeed the ping moves port vmkernel esx1 directly on the port of uplink of the esx2 and back again check connection of storage correct

apologies if I didn't explain better, but if you need additional information on my question let me know.

    Thak you.

    Hello

Yes you are right. The VMkernel is hypervisor - the thing that makes the magic of the work of virtualization.

The VMkernel has an IP stack to do the things that you have mentioned: vMotion, iSCSI, NFS, etc. which do not exist as on the VMkernel interfaces. Often, but not always, these IP addresses are not accessible outside the VMkernel. For example, if you run an isolated network dedicated to these services. Essentially by issuing a vmkping you issue a ping from the VMkernel interface for another interface, VMkernel not necessarily another interface.

Compare this with the ping who seems just the Service Console interface.

If we look at a simple ESX build - two hosts (ESXA and ESXB) with two NICs (vmnic0 and vmnic1). On the ESXA and B, we have the Service Console running vmnic0 with the natachasery connected to a switch. We perform a cross on the cable between the hosts connected to vmnic1 and have configured it for vMotion. In this scenario if you issue a ping from host you a submission in response to the Service Console of IP and other devices on the same subnet connected to the switch. However if you ping the address of vMotion you won't because it is on another inaccessible network - in steps vmkping.

    Trust that this assistance.

  • Advice on appropriate hosts of ESXi and NAS network configuration

I am looking for tips or best practices on the implementation of my ESXi 4.0 hosts with my NAS... Here is some basic information:

-Certified VMware AberNAS with matrix RAID 5 SAS (2 x Gig NIC) drives

-2 x HP Proliant welcomes each with 6-8 Gig NIC

Currently, NAS NIC are associated to balance the load connected to two different switches.  HP hosts are also associated to balance the load connected to 2 different switches.

Here is a glance at the basic configuration in vcenter:

    vmnetwork.JPG

Because I have a lot of NETWORK interface card on the server (4 used... but 8 in total), I would like to configure this to improve performance.  So my questions:

1 can I create a new vswitch sin and dedicate the traffic between the hosts and NAS?  How?  Place them on a physical switch dedicated between the hosts, NAS and LAN?

    2. create a dedicated NIC for VM vmotion of hosts?

    3. any other configuration benefiting NFS and VMware?

Am open to any idea. Thank you

-There are currently of 2 guests (am licensed for 3 and can install later). In addition, I have 2 physical switches gigabit dedicated to SAR/VM host nic and are resources shared LAN... so when the facility management/vmotion Teddy bear design, do I imitate the same configuration on the two hosts?  Do stay even these teddy bears, connected to one of the switches of concert?

Yes you would duplicate the installation on both hosts-

-With a device SIN the NIC on the NAS is associated with unique IP address and is dedicated to the virtual machine infrastructure.  Then I'd have 2 bears from each host AND the 2 bears from the NAS connected to the dedicated physical switch isoltaed and ip static'd just like different subnet?

Yes - as I said with a single IP address on a NAS for the natachasery on the hosts would be in a configuration of active / standby - it is more about the fact that ESXi does not really load balancing between the two network cards but selects a teddy bear based on the source and destination IP addresses - so if any of these changes the traffic's not on a unique Teddy

  • vMotion between ESX 3.5 5.1 ESXi MAchines?

Hi guys I need to know if possible to a Vmotion between ESX 3.5 s machines to ESXi 5.1?

I hace 2 servers with ESX 2.5 I want to do the update to 4.1 and then to 5.1 hot, for that, I have 4 new esxi 5.1.

Accoeding to http://partnerweb.vmware.com/comp_guide2/sim/interop_matrix.php? It is not possible because you cannot manage the ESX 3.5 with vCenter 5.1 - I advise to use VMware Converter to V2V virtual machines to the new environment of 6.1.

  • ESXI hosts 5-2 and the best way to configure vSwitch and Nic redundancy

    Hi all

Could someone help me find the best way to configure the vNetwork on 2 5 ESXI host for redundancy.  Once I managed to correctly configure the 2 hosts I will seek to use the same installation process for 6 guests.  3 sites with 2 hosts on each site managed all of vCentre Server

I have 2 DL380 G7 servers 5 ESXI installed on a class 10, 8 GB SD card, I'm looking to install VSA on the 2 hosts on each server with 4 TB of internal storage (8 * 600 GB 10 k SAS).  Each server has a gigabit integrated 4-port NIC and I installed a 2nd NIC gigabit PCIe 4 ports, I also x 2 16 switches of port with Layer 3 routing.  I use vSphere 5 Standard acceleration Kit I am looking to use vCentre server for managing, vMotion for maintenance, HA for the failover and VM 10/15 (vCentre Server Std, DB SQL to vCentre Server, Exchange 2010, SQL Server 2008 R2, IIS Intranet, Helpdesk, 1 DC, 2 Domain Controller, AV Server, WSUS, SCCM Server, and Terminal Server server).

What would be the best way to install and configure the network for performance and redundancy and am I missing something?

    My thoughts are, Teaming: -.

    vCenter - vswitch0 - port1 on NIC1 and port1 on NIC 2 - port1 on NIC1 to physical switch 1 - port1 on NIC2 to physical switch 2

    vMotion - vswitch1 - port2 on NIC1 and port2on NIC 2 - port2 on NIC1 to physical switch 1 - port2 on NIC2 to physical switch 2

    HA - vswitch3 - port3 on NIC1 and port3on NIC 2 - port3 on NIC1 physics 1 - port3 on NIC2 to physical switch 2 switch

    VM - vswitch4 - port4 on NIC1 and port4on NIC 2 - port4 on NIC1 to physical switch 1 - port4 on NIC2 to physical switch 2

or do I need an additional NIC on each server to hit the VM 12-6 VM for 2 ports on 2 NETWORK interface card, or maybe something else I missed?

    Thank you

In your case, to keep it simple and what I can say here is what would be my recommendation:

    3 standard vSwitches

    vSwitch0:

    • Management - vmnic0, vmnic2

    vSwitch1:

    • vMotion - vmnic1, vmnic3

    vSwitch2:

    • VM network - vmnic4, vmnic5, vmnic6, vmnic7

The only reason why that I didn't split the VM in other network adapters shipped is because the difference in the types of the DL380 adapter shipped and the PCIe quad.

This error message occurs generally if guests have different BIOS settings or even different BIOS versions.
