VMware Security Advisory VMSA-2016-0001 on "shared folders".

SO, I just received this notice of VMware in my Inbox, and I don't understand how this is related to the ESXi.   I am aware of the shared folders when you are working in fusion and workstation VM, I did, but since when is that a feature in ESXi?  If it is there, his escape me all these years of work with the products of basic infrastructure...

Can someone please shed some light on how this VMs Advisory effects running on ESXi and how to use this shared functionality issues with virtual machines running on ESXi.

I do not see the specific newsletter you would need to have installed the toolbar of the virtual machine full version, but still, have not heard of this with ESXi and vCenter... and I can not find instructions on how to configure it with the virtual machines running on ESXi.

Newsletter details are below:

Elevation of privileges important comments non-windows in VMware Tools

Kernel memory corruption vulnerability is present in VMware tools

"Shared folders" feature (HGFS) running Microsoft Windows. Successful

exploitation of this issue could lead to an escalation of privilege in

guest operating system.

VMware would like to thank Dmitry Janushkevich of the Secunia

Research team for reporting this issue to us.

Note: This vulnerability does not allow for elevation of privileges of

the guest to the host operating system. Memory of the host cannot be

manipulation of the guest operating system by exploiting this vulnerability.

Hello

This seems to be a problem with VMware Tools which contains the driver HGFS. Even if it does not work on ESXi, if the virtual machine is migrated to a non-ESXi system and HGFS is enabled then HGFS would have the problem. ESXi has other controls does not affect the fact that HGFS has a problem. It's one of the reasons that the Hardening Guide said to turn it off in any case.

  • How to activate the shared folders in the VMware tools

    I'm running a Windows 2003 Server EE guest x 64 OS in a virtual machine hosted by ESXi 3.5 u4 build 199239. VMware tools have been updated to the latest version for this build ESX.  In the VMware Tools Properties GUI the shared folders tab says "shared folders are currently disabled on the host computer.  Please see VMware documentation to find out how to activate it. "I searched all the VMware Documentation and have not found the answer to this question.

    I'm looking for advice on creating a script to find all VM with HGFS running, or where the service is actually used.

    Apparently, VMware posted the notice of security VMSA-2016-0001 | United States yesterday and my security people are panicking.

    Any information you have would be useful.

    The only way I know is questioning the guest operating system itself and check the registry path:

    HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\NetworkProvider\Order

    and check if the value string ProviderOrder hgfs, vmhgs or vmhgfs.

    You should remove these values and restart the virtual machine for the change to take effect.

    Wise PowerShell:

    $VM = get - VM NameofVM

    $Reg = [Microsoft.Win32.RegistryKey]: OpenRemoteBaseKey ("LocalMachine', $vm.extensiondata.summary.guest.hostname")

    $RegKey = $Reg.OpenSubKey("System\CurrentControlSet\Control\NetworkProvider\Order")

    $RegKey.GetValue ("ProviderOrder")

  • How to enable shared folders on VMWare Tools under ESX4

    On a windows server is running on a host ESX 4, VMWare Tools reports that the shared folders are currently disabled on the host.

    How enable and use it?

    Hello

    (VMware Shared Folders) vmhgfs driver will not work with ESX or ESXi, it is only for the workstation, Fusion, a player of nd. I would put in a virtual firewall that denies all access and dev environment, until you're ready to share data.

    You can then open a port on the firewall and have a system to capture these data via the port. The alternative is to use something like a Keyspan USB hub IP and write data on a USB key, and then physically move to the side of the "production" of the House.

    In general I find instead of much easier virtual firewall... VMsafe even won't work here.

  • Sharing folders VMWare Tools

    So this isn't really a question but a survey.

    Since ESX 2.5 when having shared folders enabled on a workgroup server has prevented you from a domain controller promotion (workaround was to join to the first domain) I have always done a custom install, tools and deleted shared folders.  In VServer I see as useful to have, but I can't understand why you would need it in ESX Server.  I never need in the environment, I was successful.

    Anyone using the option of shared folders in ESX environments and if not... Maybe VMWare should remove it as a default installation option (or just remove it altogether I assumed)

    So any that use shared folders if they install by default and if remove you it, why...

    Hello

    NEVER leave the VMHGFS and ESX host. This could be very bad from a security perspective. The only "VM Escape" for VMware products on disc is also due the VMHGFS within the workstation. ESX must never be a universal file server.

    Probably cause VMware Tools can be 'universal' for VMware virtualization products.

    This is the real reason. There is a single source for VMware Tools now, so it includes elements for Workstation, Server, and ESX.

    For awhile, there was a bug report on VMware Tools on edit fstab to accommodate the vmhgfs even if it is not built or used in ESX. This is a bug, etc.

    Hello

    I am running Windows XP Tablet SP2 because SP3 trashes my graphics card.
    Should I worry about FLAME? What do you recommend?
    When I tried to apply the patch, I got a message that I need SP3!

    Thank you

    Info: Support for WinXP SP2 ended nearly two years ago.

    Fact: The computer lacks literally scores of critical security updates.

    Fact: The computer in question must NOT be connected to the internet or local area network (i.e. other computers) in its current state. All your personal data (e.g., banking online & passwords credit card) must be considered at risk, if not already compromised.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    OPTION A: Take the computer to a local computer equipment recycler & kiss goodbye.
    OPTION B: Format the hard drive and then do a clean install (another?) of Windows. [Remove Acronis images previously created in advance].
    Follow the instructions in this post of mine in another forum (to-the-letter & in order! ): http://aumha.net/viewtopic.php?f=62&t=44636
    If you need additional assistance with the clean install, please start a new thread in this forum: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_xp-system
    Tip: If you still have problems with the pen after cleaning install, chances are that you just need a driver updated for the capture software. You should be able to find the update of the pilot on the bridge or the device, the manufacturer download pages.
    Wish I had better news for you.  Good luck!
  • Security Advisory 2719662 any compensation for loss of job
    Hi, is there a reason why Microsoft feels they can stop supported monetary users of a service produced by removing the gadget feature without offering compensation or a replacement for loss of use product? It's basically false advertising since it was one of the main reasons why I bought this version of Windows.
    I paid for Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade, because I need to use the gadget functionality. The sidebar is still working and I still have some official gadgets provided with Windows 7, but they admit that I use now them at my own risk if I do not use the removal procedure.
    Why should I use the gadgets at my risk, when they must do the right thing and just fix security flaws and allow users to use the product safely?
    As a compromise, I offered to pay the current price of promotion for new PC buyers get Windows 8, because they will have the support of gadget. They told me that they can not extend the offer to me or give me any kind of compensation at all.
    Without gadgets, Vista and Windows 7 are basically not a major change in XP now.
    Hello
    You can give your comments to this question below.
    Kind regards.
  • Bug report: strange behavior with sharing folders Mac & PHP require (8 VMware)
    I'm using VMware Fusion 8.0.0 (2985594) on Mac OS Yosemite (10.10.5 (14F27)) and I have a Linux VM with Debian Wheezy (3.2.0 - 4-amd64) and PHP (5.4.41 - 0 + deb7u1).
    After I've upgraded from VMware Fusion 7 WMware Fusion 8, the (open source CMS) Typo3 on my development machine began to throw PHP syntax errors during playback of its cache files. As I investigated the problem I found that the behavior is reproducible, but only when the files are written to the folder that is shared between the host system and the VM.
    When I'm demanding a PHP a certain file size and a certain name of file, PHP seems to continue reading about the end of the file in the middle of the arbitrariness of other files. This leads mainly to errors in syntax PHP - but according to the name of the file that they differ, for example:
    PHP Parse error:  syntax error, unexpected '' in require284.php on line 93
    PHP Parse error:  syntax error, unexpected '' in require107.php on line 88
    ^[[APHP Parse error:  syntax error, unexpected 'p' in require472.php on line 88
    PHP Parse error:  syntax error, unexpected end of file in require884.php on line 88
    PHP Parse error:  syntax error, unexpected 'u' in require185.php on line 89
    All of these errors are generated by requiring the same content with different file names. If I am demanding the same file with the same name, the PHP error is also the same.
    Steps to reproduce
    I wrote a PHP script that seeks a different file names for a given text, until it crashes. Store this file in the shared folder and run it with php f. As you can see, all the content of the file is commented out, so it shouldn't affect anything.
    This problem occurs only for the upgrade of VMware 8 and only when the script runs in the shared folders, I strongly suspect that it is a problem within the VMware stack.
    Can anyone elso reproduce this behavior?
    Hello
    If you use the kernel of an open-vm-tools HGFS customer then yes there are bugs because the version provided with that was broken and not tested. People has not listened to my complaints about it.
    Current recommended approach is to always use the installation of VMware tools for the shared folders feature.
    Open-vm-tools are used to install tools user mode only. We try to make all of the features available with these, including a file sharing client FUSE based. Version 10 of the open-vm-tools will have this.
    Stick with VMware tools install for now for file sharing.
    Thanks for your great art information and debugging this issue.
  • Ubuntu LTS 14.04 will not install VMWare Tools ability to shared folders
    Get the following error when trying to install VMWare Tools within a host running Ubuntu LTS 14.04.  I tried to open a ticket in the VMWare system and got an error (lose faith in Vmware here as an ESXi + client Fusion...)
    Looks like Vmware must update VMware tools for Ubuntu 14.04 kernel headers?
    The filesystem (vmhgfs module) driver is used only for the shared folder
    feature. The rest of the software provided by VMware Tools is designed to work
    regardless of this function.
    If you want the shared folders feature, you can install the driver of
    running vmware-config - tools.pl once after being assured that gcc, binutils, make
    and your kernel sources are installed on your computer.
    These packages are available on the installation of your distribution CD.
    Seems to work fine with the tools in the recent update to VMware Fusion 6.0.3:
    http://www.VMware.com/go/downloadfusion
    Certainly the tools should be updated in order to support a view recent guests of Ubuntu Unity (disabled, sofar, also with 6.0.3 + 14.04): maybe in Fusion 6.1, who knows...
  • Sharing folders hidden in VMware Fusion
    Hello
    A that someone managed to share a hidden folder (ie. a directory starting with a '. ') in VMware Fusion? For example, I want to share my directory ~/.ssh with my vm linux client.
    When I try to add a folder in the GUI, it appears a search dialog box but does not display hidden folders. I can't find any option to display these files. If this is not the case, is there a command line tool that I have will allow me to do?
    See you soon,.
    Dave
    Even if you expose files hidden in Finder that will allow you to see them in Virtual Machine > settings... > sharing or you will be able to see displayed by default in the operating system invited via '\\vmware-host\Shared' files , unless you change the settings to view the folders hidden with the hosts control however operating systems here is a workaround.
    Using your need to see the hidden file ~/.ssh here, that's what I did.
    The following has been done with the Virtual Machine to stop target of in the guest operating system, not suspended by VMware Fusion.
    In my case, I made a folder named temporarily: dotssh
    In my Virtual Machine under sharing settings I added a folder by selecting the dotssh file and then closed VMware Fusion and then deleted the folder ~/dotssh .
    Then I edited the configuration of the Virtual Machine's .vmx file.
    When I added the dotssh shared folder it added several lines of parameters to the configuration of the Virtual Machine's .vmx file, and two in particular that I edited then manually.
    sharedFolder0.hostPath = "~/dotssh"
    sharedFolder0.guestName = "dotssh"
    I then changed to:
    sharedFolder0.hostPath = "~/.ssh"
    sharedFolder0.guestName = ".ssh"
    Next I opened VMware Fusion and started Virtual Machine and once at the level of the Windows desktop, I double-clicked the shortcut "VMware shared folders" and he opened the Windows Explorer "\\vmware-host\Shared records" and of course this folder appears empty as I had no other normal folders shared nor was the guest operating system configured to display hidden however folders add "\.ssh" to the "\\vmware-host\Shared records" in the address bar has allowed me to see the content of the .ssh my Home on Mac folder.
    Then I made a new desktop shortcut pointing to "\\vmware-host\Shared.ssh" to use instead of the shortcut to "VMware Shared Folders" by default, but I could also see hidden folders of the guest operating system and then would the .ssh folder without having to type in the address bar or create a new shortcut It's your choice.
  • VMware Player - shared folders
    My understanding is that VMware Player supports folders as part of its feature set.
    Or, activate transparently shared folders, access the data on your host computer.
    However, reading I've done, it appears that VMtools must be installed for that to be the case, and that it is not distributed with VMplayer VMtools.  Neither seems to VMtools distributed by any means VMserver... which brings me to legal concerns regarding installation of the VMtools on a system with VMplayer installed.  Some clarification would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you!
    Yes, you can have the creator of the virtual machine to install tools for you.  However, in addition to just install VMWare Tools, the path to the shared folder on your host computer must be specified.  (for example: C:\) The documents and Settings\ myusername \My Documents.)  You must tell the creator of the VM path to the folder on your host computer... and I hope that it isn't typo there.    If it does, then you have him to redo the VM again, or you must manually change the. VMX configuration file.  You can keep the part in a 'simple' path.  (for example: C:\sharedfolder.)
    So IMHO it is just as easy, if not easier, just install Workstation in trial mode, install VMWare Tools, then set up shared folders.  (Basically, just navigate to the folder you want to share.)
  • Shared folders in VMWare Fusion 2 - How do you see their VM?
    I have shared folders enabled in the settings of the virtual machine - I used to have a shortcut to folder on my desktop virtual to a shared folder, but when I upgraded to VWare fusion 2 (starting from 1) the broken link, and I can not locate where the shared folders are mounted in my Vista VM now.
    Where do I go to 'find' my shared folders in my VM?
    Thank you - I do not know why it isn't painfully obvious in the documentation.
    When you upgraded to Fusion 2, you updated of the tools in the comments? Have you tried to uninstall tools, by restarting the guest and installing the tools? Have you checked that a HGFS folder is always set up?
