VMware Workstation v9.0.1 changes.

Hello!

I read https://www.VMware.com/support/ws90/doc/workstation-901-release-notes.html correctly as the only changes added two OSes? Thus, no correction of bugs and other things?

Thank you in advance.

HOWEVER... F12 not letting me NOT select a different boot device. If I go into the BIOS and go to the start menu, I see the hard disk and not the CD is at the top of the list and there is no way to change the boot order. Up, down and '+' and '-' keys don't do. The machine is a version that compatible with 6-7, but I shouldn't have to level 9 (I think, anyway).

The boots of the virtual machine so fast but after that everything a 100 attempts I can't else primary hard drive to boot first.

With VMware Workstation (or at least tab of the virtual machine) closed, add

    bios.bootDelay = "5000".

to the virtual machine's .vmx file. This will add a 5 second delay for the startup process that will allow you to hit the "ESC" key to the start menu and to attach an ISO or CD image to the virtual machine. Make sure that the virtual CD-ROM presents itself as 'Connected' before proceeding with the selection of the boot device.

  • Old PITA bread - change the MAC address in VMware Workstation 6.5?

Some versions of VMware Workstation enabled to manually set the MAC address of the virtual card.

This possibility has been changed for several reasons.

My personal opinion is clear.  A virtual machine needs to reflect as much as possible a hardware machine.

VMware Workstation you can not change the MAC address, or you are related to a limited possibility, were the first hex addresses are fixed,

so that it shows on the outside, it is a virtual machine.  VMware response is, you must run the server edition.  Well...

Currently, I have seen, that the recent version of Virtual Box allows you to manually enter the MAC address

for the virtual Interfaces based on Intel NIC. You can enter any MAC address, including existing material, NIC Intel MAC.

So my opinion, the possibility of lock-out to COMPLETELY change the mac address of the virtual machine,

must be activated again for all versions of VMware, as it is the option with other software.

HM?  As far as I know, we have not added any restrictions.  We do not provide a user interface for it, but manually modifying the .vmx file and change ethernet0.addressType and ethernet0.address to a MAC from another provider address seem to work for me.

I don't think the static MAC addresses are actually limited to the 00:50:56 range.

  • How can I change default location VM VMware Workstation via Group Policy or to a Script?

    Hello

I administer a laboratory of my school networking in a Windows Server 2008 R2 environment. We want to enable folder redirection but since VMware Workstation creates new virtual machines by default in the C:\Users\Username\Documents\Virtual Machines, I can't do this, or else the NAS would be overloaded.

My question is, is there a file registry or config that I could change via a script or a political group? In this way, all students would default their VM install to another location.

    Thanks for your time.

The default location is %USERPROFILE%\Documents\Virtual Machines and is not set in the registry of Windows or the disk file until the default is changed and is then defined in the file %APPDATA%\VMware\preferences.ini as: prefvmx.defaultVMPath = "FQP.

  • Cannot change the power state of VM: cannot...   (VMWare Workstation 7 on Debian Lenny)

Hi all, I am new to this community. I recently installed VMWare Workstation 7 on a Debian Lenny (kernel 2.6.26.2 - amd64). I had no problem with it, but when I tried to start a Virtual Machine Windows Vista, which I created it, does not start. Error says windows "cannot change the power state of VM: could not find a peer valid to connect to". "" Any idea, please?

    Josber.

It seems that the virtual machine has been suspended when your host is using a different screen resolution

either change back to the resolution that you used when you suspenmded the machine virtual or delete the VMS.

This will force the VM to do a cold boot

  • How to change VMware Server 2 in VMware Workstation?

    People,

Hello. I installed VMware Server 2.0.2 in Windows 7 host. Then, I created a virtual machine and install Windows Server 2003 as a guest operating system. I installed some application programs in the Windows Server 2003 operating system, and has done a lot of work into them. Everything works successfully for some time.

Because VMware Server 2 does not support Windows 7 as host operating system. Strange thing can happen anytime. While I work in Guest OS Win2K3, the connection is suddenly lost. VMware Server 2 home page can not be displayed anymore. The virtual machine and the Win2K3 comments is no longer accessible.

I have to install VMware Workstation that supports Windows 7 as host operating system and Windows Server 2003 as a guest operating system. So, I have 2 questions:

First of all, if I uninstall VMware Server 2 on Windows 7, does it affect the virtual machine that supports the Windows Server 2003 OS?  Everything, including the OS Winn2K3 and its application programs, will be lost?

Second, if I install VMware Workstation in Windows 7, can the Guest OS Windows Server 2003 be transferred from VMware Server 2 VMware Workstation?

People can help answer these 2 questions?

If uninstall VMware Server 2 on Windows 7 and its Guest OS Win2K3 will be lost, I'll lose a lot of time and work!

    Thanks in advance.

    Hello

You can uninstall vmware server without any problems and you will not lose your vm.

Anyway just for more security you can make a backup of the virtual machine before you uninstall vmware server 2. Just backup files of the virtual machine. Then you can uninstall the server and install workstation

After the workstation installation, you would be able to run the virtual machine in workstation, simply add the virtual machine to the workstation inventory, pointing to the .vmx files for the virtual machine.

In any case if you can not run the virtual machine, you can use vmware converter to perform the conversion between server and workstation. It is a good tool and it does not hurt to learn how to use it

    Hope this helps you.

    Best wishes / Saludos.

    Hello

Open the command run and enter: MSINFO32

The returned information will tell you if virtualization is enabled.  If this isn't the case, then you need to make a change in the BIOS to turn on VT is defined by default to disable.  See the image below.

  • VMWare Workstation 12 and 18 of Linux Mint (Ubuntu 16.04) and vmware tools or open-vmware-tools

I created a new virtual machine using VMWare Workstation 12.1.1 build-3770994 with a guest OS from Linux Mint 18 (which is built on top of Ubuntu 16.04). I have two monitors on my system, the two 2560 x 1440. I am unable to get this virtual machine Linux Mint 18 to cover all of my two monitors when I disable "Accelerate 3D graphics" in my vm settings, I get an error. I have another Linux Mint 17 VM running on the same VMWare Workstation 12 on the same host machine from Windows 10 and it is able to expand on my two monitors very well with "Accelerate 3D graphics" disabled, but he does not open-vmware-tools.

I have read instructions telling me to install open-vm-Tools-Office in this guest operating system of Linux Mint 18. I did it. Then I restart the guest operating system. When starting, I can click on 'Enter full screen mode' in my menu of VMWare Workstation, and the guest OS has a monitor as expected. When I then click on "Cycle multiple monitors", I get the following error. "The virtual machine could not be changed to the selected screen layout. If you add a monitor to the host computer, you must turn off and turn on the virtual machine to use this monitor. »

    vmware-monitors-error.jpg

I can optimize my VM to automatic adjustment, only one of my two screens, but not both. I tried to uninstall and reinstall open-vm-tools, open-vm-tools-desktop and restart. I tried to use /vmware-tools-distrib/vmware-install.pl's original vmware tools and who does not work either.

In my vmware.log, I get these two lines that occur when I get the above error.

    2016 07-12 T 15: 43:19.068 - 06:00 | MKS | I125: ToolsSetDisplayTopology: send rpcMsg = 1 DisplayTopology_Set, 0 0 2560 1440

    2016 07-12 T 15: 43:24.853 - 06:00 | vCPU-1 | I125: TOOLS of the call to DisplayTopology_Set failed.

When I activate "Accelerate 3D graphics" with the configuration described above, I am able to use both of my monitors. Why is this the case?

I think remember having to disable "Accelerate 3D graphics" in my Linux Mint 17 comments vm because it would crash randomly. I try to run this VM Linux Mint 18 with 3D acceleration and see if it crashes, but why is there a difference with spanning multiple monitors?

    Thank you.

I didn't experience this problem for a few weeks. I don't have a definitive answer to my original problem.

I installed Mate instead of cinnamon 3 to my MINT 18. Then, I created a new VM with Ubuntu Gnome 3 16.04 running as the OF. I did have problems with both approaches. I also tried using Firefox as my main browser instead of Chrome, as I read that Chrome can have problems of memory. It could be a combination of several of these changes that have allowed me to work without problems.

Knowing what I know now, I think the move away from cinnamon 3 is what seems to have fixed my problems. I can certainly say that you use Firefox consumes less memory, as I can monitor the monitor system under Ubuntu. Chrome would eventually eat all my system memory, that I could see. The extent of the why? I'm not sure at this point.

  • 6u2 ESXi host nested on VMware Workstation for Linux referee v12

    Hello all, I have

I have a lab environment virtual running in VMware Workstation for Linux v12, and my ESXi hosts do not work correctly on one of the virtual networks. All my troubleshooting suggests a problem with nested ESXi hosts that may be a bug, but I want to assure you that I did everything properly first. That's why I post here with the hope that if I made a mistake that maybe someone else can point out he me.

    Physical system

8 core Intel Xeon 2.1 GHz CPU

    128 GB of RAM

OS - kernel Linux 64 - bit w/3.19.0-32-generic Linux Mint 17.3 (fully updated from this announcement)

VMware Workstation 12 Pro - 12.1.1. Build-3770994 (fully updated from this announcement)

    Nested ESXi host VM

ESXi v6.0.0 (Build 3825889, completely updated from this announcement)

4 cards 'physical' (only 3 used for now)

-all use the e1000 NIC hardware virtual, but also tried vmxnet3 NIC with no difference

    -vSwitch0 use vmnic0 & 1 vmnet16 of virtual network in a pair of active / standby

    -vSwitch1 uses vmnic2 on network virtual vmnet18

-vmk0 used for management on vSwitch0 and vmk1 for iSCSI on vSwitch1

-"Promiscuous" mode and forged passes enabled on all Port vSwitch groups (activating or turning off these features makes no difference)

    Test performed until now

I checked that all the IP addresses and network masks used are correct.

With the help of vmkping I ping other nodes on the network vmnet16 with success.

With the help of vmkping I tried to ping the other nodes in the network vmnet18, but that has failed.

I have depolyed other non - ESXi VMs on the vmnet18 network, and they are able to ping each other, but are unable to ping or ping by the ESXI host.

I tried various material virtual NIC as mentioned before, but without changes in the results.

I tried to use only local network instead of the vmnet18 guest network segments with no change in results.

When I find out the status of the network adapters on the ESXi host through vCenter or host incorporated client vmnic0 & 1 time display network information, but vmnic2 shows no networks. Yet, I know that there is a network with different VM communicate on it. Moreover, I was able to get all of this work on a Windows system running 10 Workstation (this is the laptop that my employer gives me with).

Having built nested ESXi labs on different platforms as well as physical environments in the past, I'm very confused as to why I can't get this special configuration to work. At this point my gut tells me that this is probably a bug any with the nested themselves ESXi hosts. Since I can get all this work on vmnet16 including the management of ESXi hosts and the VCSA that I use, I am sure that my vSwitch configuration is correct (other than the IP address space and vmnic configurations is bascially the same). Because I can get other virtual machines to communicate over the network vmnet18 I don't see how can be a VMware Workstation for the issue physical Linux host. Is there something obvious I'm missing here? I read on the ESXi hosts nested under VMware Workstation after having known problems and bugs with networking. If anyone else has experienced this?

Thanks for any help others can provide!

    Kind regards

    Patrick

Well, the problem is now resolved. The problem was what covelli was trying to explain, but I couldn't because the physical host network adapters being mentioned.

The problem on the Linux host, but it was a problem of permissions with the virtual Ethernet adapters. The following article has the fix:
With the help of Ethernet virtual cards in Promiscuous Mode on a Linux host (287) | VMware KB

Even if I launched the workstation under the root user I have yet met this problem and which still makes no sense to me, but change the permissions solve the problem. I was not getting an error message on my Linux Mint and Ubuntu system, but when I tried on a second box of Linux Mint that I just got the error has been generated, and the error message was the above link it contains.

    So, here's what I learned:

    (1) the question has nothing to with a VMware Workstation definition that you can configure.

    (2) the question has nothing to do with a physical network card.
    (3) the question has nothing to do with any vmnic on the nested ESXi host.

    (4) apparently virtual Ethernet adapters are not the correct permissions when created.

All you have to do to fix this is:

    (1) open a terminal.

    (2) run the command ' sudo chmod a + rw/dev/vmnet * "(don't forget to run this each time that you create a new virtual network).

You can also create a group, as shown in the link above and simply give this group the correct permissions. Personally, I think it's easier to just give everyone the rw permission.

I appreciate the help that others have offered. I did not understand what was asked for in previous answers because of the terms that have been used.

  • Cannot start the virtual machine on VMware Workstation 12.1.0

The host machine is W2008R2, VM is the same. When im trying to start the current VM I see VMware screen, then "download files" screen loading, then VMware loading new screen and etc.

    Log file is attached below.

An update of the firmware could certainly help.  After you install the update of the firmware, it can be useful following the instructions from the motherboard to reset the firmware configuration by default (if its configuration is not too heavily customized) and then reconfigure with custom settings, you might need.  Check that you have disabled in your TXT firmware settings too... who's going to stop us from using the capabilities of VT - x from the host.  And, where there is doubt, the error message is not really pleasant on cyclical food... Some systems cannot put a change of configuration of VT - x into force without being truly disconnected from power for a while, so if in case of doubt, he put it off and remove the power outlet for a few seconds.

Your CPU is certainly capable of VT - x and support all the VT - x features required by VMware Workstation... Simply to force the system to allowing the use of VT - x and then it should start to work well.

    See you soon,.

  • Why vmware workstation does not mask the cpuid SYSCALL/SYSRET little?

I am running VMware workstation 11.1.3 on linux.  In my client operating system 64-bit, I notice that cpuid for eax = 0 x 8000001 returns a value edx masks who has always little 11.  It's the bit SYSCALL/SYSRET ability.

Here is the part of the vmware.log file shows the parameters of my hostCPUID:

    2016 02-03 T 15: 59:19.629 - 08:00 | VMX | I120: hostCPUID level 80000001, 0: 0x00000000 0x00000000 0 x 00000021 0x2c100800

As you can see, edx is 0x2c100800, which means that my system is capable of SYSCALL/SYSRET.

I tried to add the following to my vmx file:

    monitor_control.enable_fullcpuid = 'TRUE '.

    CPUID.80000001.EDX = '-:-:-:-:-: 1 -: -: - ".

Unfortunately, even with these settings, my diary of vmware shows no entry in the section 'Differences CPUID of hostCPUID' to cpuid.80000001.

As a test, I tried to change bit 10 instead of 11 to cpuid.80000001.edx bits and the difference that presented themselves.  So what is the 11 bit characteristic, and why is he always have hidden inside the virtual machine no matter what I do?

    Thank you.

You check what code 64-bit or 32-bit code in compatibility mode?  Mode 32 bits (legacy and compatibility), only AMD processors set this bit.

  • Host Windows system restore back up virtual machines the VMWare Workstation?

Is it save to perform a restore of the system on a Windows host running VMWare Workstation 9.0.2 with the premises of virtual machines? I just need confirmation that the VMs will be still functional after restoring the system.

    Welcome to the community,

System Restore should not touch all personal documents, what configuration file and virtual disk are in reality. However, a restoration of the system can change the parameters of the application Windows for for example VMware Workstation. Anyway most that should happen is that you have to reinstall VMware Workstation in such a case.

see "what files changed during a system restore?" at http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/system-restore-faq

In any case, it is always useful to have a current backup!

  • External client access VMware Workstation shared 11 VM?

    Hello world

I have a small problem that we have a VMware workstation installed on my PC to 10 windows and I would allow a few colleagues access to the virtual machines shared on this topic.

I enabled the shared virtual machine settings, and I can confirm that I can connect from another post on my local network.

However, I can't seem to connect to the shared virtual machines from outside my network. I DynDNS and handed over port 443 to the Windows box with installed Workstation (192.168.2.10).

I even tried changing ports internally using the shared virtual machine parameters.

Also tried, is to have a different external port one internally (7000 ext sent to 443)

Adding to this I tried the IP of my router (to rule out DDNS) - in regard to this, I can connect directly to the virtual machine via DDNS passed to image.

The Windows Firewall is disabled on the host of the workstation.

Then... Please this is; Is this really possible? Before that I continue to invest in any time in it.

And... I tried to get that I promise you!

Kudos to everyone for any help

    Hi SpoonRacer,

Welcome to the community of workstation! Of course, this scenario is possible. Sharing of the VM has no difference with other standard network on the IP layer services.

I think that General measures to be implemented are:

    1. Get the accessible external IP address of your private network
    2. Map the TCP 443 port to the external IP address on port TCP 443 of the Windows box workstation running by the DNAT
    3. Allow inbound network traffic on port TCP 443 on Windows machine running Workstation
    4. (Optional) Configure DynDNS point your domain name to the external IP address of your private network

    For example:

    1. Get the external IP address: 216.58.216.164
    2. Map 216.58.216.164:443 to 192.168.2.10:443 by the DNAT
    3. Open the TCP 443 port on host 192.168.2.10 (now you should be able to access your shared virtual machines using 216.58.216.164 for outside networks)
    4. (Optional) Configure ws.spoonracerdomain.org resolves to 216.58.216.164 (now, you should be able to access your shared virtual machines using ws.spoonracerdomain.org for outside networks)

However, these steps are not very easy to implement due to some possible limitations of your private network:

    • If your private network is at home, the external IP address and it is very accessible from outside of the network depends on your ISP (internet service provider). I know, some ISP does not allow the public IP address used by individual users accessible via the public network. Some ISPS even not you assigned a public IP, other users and you share a single public IP, in this case, you would not be able to apply step 2.
    • If your private network is to your business, and you're not network administrator for your company, you would not be able to apply step 2.

Anyway, you can try to open a Web site on the Windows machine running Workstation to the outside network. If successful, then the service share of VM can be done the same way (just change the port 80 of the site to 443 folder).

    Kind regards

    Shawn
