"Webexp Enhanced V1" malware included in Firefox 26.0?

After the pop-up windows when you click the text non-random link on various Web pages of 'safe' and familiar, I suspected that the malware was present. I noticed "Webexp Enhanced V1" listed in Firefox "Add-ons" in the control panel-> programs-> programs and features (date of installation with a 20/12/13). The only installations/updates in the last 10 days have been "VLC Player 2.1.2", "Service Maintenance of Mozilla's" and "Mozilla Firefox 26.0".

Due to past experiences with Firefox + malware, I suspect the malware was installed with one of the updates of Firefox, but I would like to hear from others who have had similar experiences and to confirm or refute my suspicions.

I quickly uninstalled the malicious software. However, I wonder if there is something that can be done to prevent the installation of malicious software in the future.

Kind regards.

I found a report about it on the VideoLan forum:

https://Forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?f=14 & t = 116118 Webexp Enhanced Malware V1 included in point 2.1.2 update?

I don't know if it's a coincidence that you also VLC Media Player installed.
In any case, I see you already deleted "Webexp Enhanced V1" in the list of Firefox Add-ons and Extensions of control panel-> programs-> programs and features. You should always look for malware. See Troubleshooting Firefox problems caused by malware for malicious software removal tools recommended.

Thank you very much. I read the references you provided and followed your advice. I decided to remove the entire program of Firefox and other issues. As a result when I did a reinstall asked me for the first time that I wanted to import all saved preferences. This implies that on other occasions when I uninstalled then installed and has not asked this question that the 'normal' uninstall process does not 'clean' preferences etc. I checked it by typing "subject: config" in the URL and search on "browser.startup.homepage" to see what preference has been saved. • Firefox.exe suddenly only 2 k (and IE 1 KB) & flagged up as a malware

January 13 (2015), I was surprised to find my anti-virus (Pure 3.0 at the time) Kaspersky software tracking upward of what follows as a malware (trojan):

    Firefox.exe C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe HOUR: Trojan.WinLNK.StartPage.gena
    Iexplore.exe C:\Program may Explorer\iexplore.exe TIME: Trojan.WinLNK.StartPage.gena
eBay Sidebar for Sidebar C:\Users\David\Desktop\eBay Firefox.lnk for Firefox.lnk HOUR: Trojan.WinLNK.StartPage.gena

I followed the instructions to the quarantine and re - start. No problem. After re-booting, I couldn't access Firefox and discovered that he had indeed been quarantined - with IE (which I use rarely) and eBay Sidebar for Firefox (which I have not used for a long time). On the restoration of these, they are still identified as malware. Further investigation revealed that firefox.exe was only 2 KB - and that is only 1 KB.

Kaspersky was advised to switch to total security, that I did and it has continued to identify the files as malware. Full virus controls, including safe mode, is not revealed. Run a suite of recommended anti-malware programs don't have pick up a limited number of bits and pieces (and I deleted) that Kaspersky has not, although my research on the net pointing everything be the kind of things that produce advertisements on browsers... not something that would erase or rename programs (I don't see bad ads though, perhaps because of my settings in Firefox Kaspersky and NoScript).

Kaspersky feels firefox.exe has been altered (on 2 k, it is certainly not right) - Although that corrupt is another question. All other files \Mozilla Firefox seem to be there, and I have no problem with other software or files on my PC (just those three). Again the same thing happened to IE at the same time. That is a hard drive failing very little likely indeed - but it makes me suspicious that there was * something * deliberately made that Kaspersky did not pick up. However, it would be unusual for decent antivirus software like Kaspersky miss something. In addition, the same question must occur widely around the same time, because if everyone around the world lost their browsers he would have made the news - not to mention advertising malware that corrupts the two browsers being rather doomed to failure!

Either way, the desktop shortcuts have been replaced by the Windows icon by default for programs that do not have a shortcut to measure. And by clicking on what was the shortcut of Firefox opens a DOS window, which closes immediately; IE does the same thing but a "16-bit MS-DOS Subsystem" error box appears (these are the days!) with:
    C:\Users\Public\Desktop\Internet client.lnk
NTVDM CPU has encountered an invalid statement.
CS: 123f IP:012d OP: 8f 9f af 6th ba choose 'Close' to terminate the application.
[By clicking on 'Close' or 'ignore' both close BACK - and that's it.] [No virus or something similar is picked up and four anti-malware programs, I am using now show that my system is clean.

    So my questions are:
    (1) any thoughts on what happened?
    (2) I need to get Firefox working again. Can I simply copy firefox.exe from another machine and replace the existing 2 k firefox.exe and everything should be good, as it was before... or it is not as simple as that? (I understand that Firefox keeps preferences, etc., in separate files).

Thanks in advance for your comments.

    Dave

    Sorry, you had this problem

It my be possible and work if you replace the firefox.exe problem

However that could cause problems and the solution would be to download and install Firefox again by an official site, and by using a pure install involving the removal of the existing program files. (Care to leave the files and folders from one Firefox profile. In fact, it would be interesting, as a precaution suspenders belts ; Locate and save first)

As to what happened, you gave a well-reasoned and intelligent summary, but after the event, it's going to is almost impossible to define. Sometimes the AV brand and/or & false positives especially temporarily if not totally updated.

    Clean reinstall it

Some Firefox problems can be solved by performing a clean reinstall. This means that you remove Firefox program files, and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps:

Note: You can print these steps or consult them in another browser.

    1. Download the latest version of Firefox from mozilla.org office (or choose the download for your operating system and language on this page) and save the file to install it on your computer.
    2. Once the download is complete, close all Firefox Windows (or open the Firefox menu

      Click the close button

      ).

    3. Remove the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
      • Windows:

        • C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
        • C:\Program Files (x 86) \Mozilla Firefox
      • Mac: Delete Firefox in the Applications folder.
      • Linux: If you have installed Firefox with the distribution-based package manager, you must use the same way to uninstall: see Install Firefox on Linux. If you have downloaded and installed the binary package from the Firefox download page, simply remove the folder firefox in your home directory.
    4. Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
      1. Double-click on the downloaded Setup file and go through the steps in the installation wizard.
      2. Once the wizard is completed, click to open Firefox directly after clicking the Finish button.

More information on the resettlement of Firefox can be found here.

WARNING: Do not use an uninstaller to third parties as part of this process. This could permanently delete your Firefox profile data, including but not limited to, extensions, cache, cookies, bookmarks, personal settings and passwords saved. They can be retrieved easily unless they have been backed up on an external device!

Make sure you use ALL the methods to search for malware, including the online scanners.

If you make a new account and connected to it and still could not download from ANY site (not only
a specific site) there are some unusual factors in the game. Don't forget to run the removal tools
as indicated above. Then, start a new account.

    ------------------------------------------------------------

Here's what I use and recommend: (these are all free and very effective versions.)

Avast and Prevx proved extremely reliable and compatible with all I have
launched on them. Microsoft Security Essentials and Prevx have also proven to be very
reliable and compatible. Use MSE or Avast and Prevx, Prevx 3 but not all.

Avast Home free - stop any shields is not necessary except leaving Standard, Web, and
    Operation of the network.

    Prevx - Home - free

    Windows Firewall

Windows Defender (is not necessary if you use MSE)

    Protected IE - mode

IE 8 - SmartScreen filter WE (IE 7 phishing filter)

I also IE always start with asset if filter InPrivate IE 8.
(It may temporarily turn off with the little icon to the left of the + bottom
    right of IE)

Two versions of Avast are available 5.x and 4.8 x

Avast - home - free - 5.x stop shields you do not use (except files, Web, network, &)
Shields of behavior) - double click on the icon in the Notification area - real time Orange - click on the
Shield that you want to stop - STOP. To stop the Orange icon to show an error indicator-
Click on the Orange icon - top right - settings - click on the status bar - uncheck shields you
    disabled - click OK
    http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download

Avast 4.8 x - home - free - stop shields, you don't need except leaving Standard, Web,.
and the network running. (Double-click the blue icon - look OK. - upper left - Shields details
    Finish those you don't use).
    http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download#TAB4

Or use Microsoft Security Essentials - free
    http://www.Microsoft.com/Security_Essentials/

Prevx works well alongside MSE or Avast

Prevx - home - free small, fast, exceptional protection CLOUD, working with other security
programs. It is a single scanner, VERY EFFICIENT, if it finds something come back here
or use Google to see how to remove.

    PCmag - Prevx - Editor's choice
    http://www.PCMag.com/Article2/0, 2817,2346862,00.asp

Also get Malwarebytes - free - use as scanner only. If you ever think malware and that
would be unusual with Avast and occasional Prevx running with the exception of a low level cookie
(not much), to UPDATE and then run it as a scanner. I have a lot of scanners and they
never find anything of note that I started to use this configuration.

  • I've been running firefox for about 4 years now and love. recently I registered in firefox, the blank cover running page, I have it on my list of authorized contacts.

I've been running firefox now for about 4 years and love. Recently, I tried signing and he spends just a blank page. I uninstalled it and re installed nothing helps. I have it on my list for my wall of green fire and we tried all the difficulties that I can. can you please help. I use your program running my websites so much better than chrome or internet explore. attached is a photo of what I experience when I'm trying to sign. than you in advance. Colleen

Hi Colleen, assuming that it is not a problem of external software, then the next few things to try include:

    Firefox Safe mode

It is a standard diagnostic tool to disable extensions, hardware acceleration, and a few other advanced features of Firefox. More info: questions to troubleshoot Firefox in Safe Mode.

If the menus are usable, you can restart Firefox in Mode safe mode using either:

    • button "3-bar" menu > "?" button > restart with disabled modules
    • Help menu > restart with disabled modules

Not all add-ons are disabled: Flash and other plugins still works

After stops in Firefox, a small dialog box should appear. Click on 'Start mode safe' (not reset).

If the menus are not usable, exit/crash Firefox and hold down the SHIFT key when you start again. A small dialog box should appear. Click on 'Start mode safe' (not reset).

    You can load pages?

If you have the same problem, it could be something in your settings or in the Firefox program folder. These approaches test these possibilities.

    Create a new Firefox profile

A new profile will be your plugins installed by system (for example, Flash) and extensions (e.g., security suite toolbars), but no themes, other extensions or other customizations. It should also come with fresh data bases of completely fresh settings and a cache folder.

Out of Firefox and start in the profile using Start Manager > Search box (or run):

    firefox.exe -P

    Do not delete anything here.

Any time want to switch profiles, exit Firefox and return to this dialog box.

Click on the button to create a profile, assign a name like Dec17 and ignore the possibility of changing the location of the folder. Then launch Firefox in the new profile that you have created.

You can load all the pages in the new profile?

If so, this looks like a settings problem. If this isn't the case, it could be the Firefox program files corruption. See the "Clean reinstall" section below.

When you return to the Profile Manager, you might be tempted to use the button to delete the profile. It's a little too easy to accidentally delete your 'real' profile, so I recommend you to resist the temptation. If you don't want to clean up later, I suggest to make a backup of all your profiles first in case something go wrong.

To keep the new profile, and migrate the data, see the article: recovery of data from an old profile.

Or as an interim measure, you can return to your regular profile and try the Reset/Refresh function. This article describes what is preserved and lost in this process: Refresh Firefox – reset settings and Add-ons.

    Clean reinstall it

    (1) download a fresh Installer for Firefox 34 of https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/ in an ideal location. (Scroll down your preferred language).

    (2) the release of Firefox.

    (3) to rename the program folder

    (Windows 32-bit folder names)

    C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox

    TO

    C:\Program Files\OldFirefox

    (Windows 64-bit folder names)

    C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox

    TO

    C:\Program Files (x86)\OldFirefox

    (4) run the installer you downloaded in the #1. It should automatically connect to your existing settings.

When you start Firefox, you may need to use the Profile Manager to return to your regular profile.

    Any improvement?

Note: Some plugins recently installed can exist only in this OldFirefox file. If it is missing something essential, present in these files:

    • \OldFirefox\Plugins
    • \OldFirefox\browser\plugins
