What is the IOPS / s?

Hello

I have a question about a common term:

I understand the "IOPS / s" means IOs per second and I think it is the amount of read and write operations during that moment of time, but what I don't understand is if there is nothing to do with the size of these written or read? Is a reading of 512 bytes and a reading of 1 MB always 'an IO? An IO could be any size?

And what determines the size of the operation of e/s? What is the stripe size for RAID or size of VMFS cluster or other?

The reason why we care about sepratly IOPS / s of throughput (MB/s) is because it causes the load on different parts of the storage system.

For example - if I have an application which is only long, wide, supported reading (say, a data warehouse), I'll probably see IOPS / very low s with large size medium and large flow.  Yes, maybe 200 Ops ARE / s but 1000 MB/s throughput.  Who will focus on the link between the system and the table and the discs themselves.  It probably will not stress the table cache, nor its processors.

However, if I have an application which is only, say 200 Mbps but making 30 000 IOPS / s, it is not much emphasis on the flow of the liaison, but dealing with all these commands (all of which are the very small) puts a huge load on the processors of the storage array. In addition, these operations all have come from a disk at some point, that has physically moving parts.  If at some point, the drive can only service X number of requests per second if you have to move the heads around a lot (see the discussion of MKguy to this topic).

We therefore care about both.

  • Dimensions of the IOPS / s

    Hello

As a first step, I would like to apologize to a silly question.

I have a small test lab that runs on small Synology NAS with two servers IBM 3560.

I'm trying to solve my laboratory IOPS performance / real s

Synology NAS include discs put in red edition of WD 2 TB mirror.

I deploy two models of vmware I/O monitor eggs in order to findout the number of IOPS / s.

What you can see below... (Model test MAX IOPS)

    TEST1.jpg

My question is why this measure shows around 8000-9000 IOPS / s when some internet HDD tests of these discs has about 200 IOPS / s...?

    Thanks in advance

About the last tests, can I run some domain controllers (file server), mail server and maybe a server snmp and vpn for about 50 users?

That is the IOPS performance / s enough?

Predict how such joint rate is hard to say, it's probably especially according to the type of workload to generate these users.

Looking at the figures alone, my little finger tells me it should be ok for users regular (outside of things like hours of backup), but in the end, you have to find yourself.

  • What is the advantage to affect multiple virtual machines in a data store?

    Hello

Quite a question stupid and basic, but I can't answer . What is the advantage of having multiple virtual machines in a store of VMFS data instead of having each VM in another VMFS data store? (eg. 3 VMs in 1 data store or 3 data warehouses and each virtual machine in one of them). I can only think about the ease of management for storage administrator because it creates only a single large LUN.

    Thank you

By allowing multiple virtual machines in a data store, you can run more than 256 virtual machines in a DRS cluster.

As a host has a limit of 256 scsi identification numbers, which means that it accesses no more than 255 LUNS shared. 1 scsi ID is used for local storage.

In a DRS cluster as each host must be mapped to the same data warehouses to ensure that virtual machines can be moved on the cluster and run on any of the hosts.

Now in my life as an architect VMware PSO I saw that a lot of virtual machines that require a single data store. The main reason to isolate a virtual machine on a data store must provide sufficient i/o performance. This can be achieved with other solutions than to isolate a virtual machine on a data store. Having a properly architected storage subsystem is crucial, vSphere can get out of a very large number of the IOPS / s. With technologies such as SIOC and DRS for storage, you can check that the virtual machines receive IO performance according to the needs.

  • Limitation of the IOPS / s on a virtual machine

I found this article that allows me to limit the number of the IOPS / s on a machine virtual (http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US & cmd = displayKC & externalId = 1038241). How is it possible by programming? What I really need to edit the VMX file directly because I can't really find any documentation in the VM object model that modifies this.

    @EOM,

To answer your question, Yes, this can be done programmatically using a script/program. The method that you are looking for if you're familiar with the vSphere API is ReconfigVM_Task() (it's a catch-all function to perform any modification to a VirtualMachine). You have the ablity to set up the two actions and IOP limits using the new property storageIOAllocation (http://vijava.sourceforge.net/vSphereAPIDoc/ver5/ReferenceGuide/vim.vm.device.VirtualDisk.html), introduced in vSphere 4.1 that is defined on a ramdisk for a virtual computer.

  • How do you collect the IOPS / s?

I know I must be missing something, but what is the best way to collect the IOPS / s of all ESX host?  I have a client who needs a new SAN, and I want to make sure that it is correctly sized.  I know how to shoot in a virtual Windows machine, but I only care about the entire ESX host and don't want to go through the headache to each virtual machine.

In the command line - run "esxtop" and use the "d" (drive option).  You will be able to see the OPS are / s then.

  • What is the best way to buy an iPhone Unlocked 7?

    Hi all

I am currently using T-Mobile and want to get the new iPhone 7. Since there is no option for a sim-free iPhone, what is the best way to buy the new iPhone? Should I get the T-Mobile one full fare? I know that he will be released version but it will come with a T-Mobile sim so what will do with the sim card? Put it away or give it to T-Mobile? Or should I wait for the version without card sim to appear, which I don't think that will come out until November, and I don't want to wait that long.

    Thank you in advance.

If you do not want to wait to pay full price for the model from T-Mobile.  You can do whatever you want with the SIM card.

  • Our time capsule will blink a light amber and utilities said that it is overheating. What is the problem?

We had a problem with our (less than 2 years) time capsule - the light yellow flashing, the fan runs often and looking in "utility" on my mac, it says that it is overheating. What is the cause of this?

The Time Capsule fan runs constantly, so you shouldn't be aware of the fan running on the time Capsule 'often'.

If you receive a message that the Time Capsule is overheating, there is probably a problem with the internal power supply on the Time Capsule.

If you have an Apple Store near you, it would be wise to take the time Capsule to let the experts check the issue and discuss your options.

When you make a bootable installation of Sierra, what is the minimum size of USB that is required?

    8 or 16GBs.

Installers for OS X Mavericks to Sierra bootable USB

First, review this introductory article: creating a Setup program bootable OS X Mavericks or Yosemite - Apple Support. Second, see this diagram how to create an El Capitan bootable Installer. Just replace the Terminal command with that of the previous article by copying it in the Terminal window.

You will need a 8 GB or more flash disk USB that has been partitioned and formatted for use with OS X.

    Drive partition and format

    1. Open utility disk from the Applications\utilitaires folder.
    2. After disk utility charges select the drive (entrance Out-bumpy with of the mfgr.) ID and size) in the list to one side.
    3. Click clear in the utility disc toolbar. Name of the player, "MyVolume". <-IMPORTANT!
    4. In the Group dropdown set the GUID partition scheme. Define the type of Format Mac OS extended (journaled).
    5. Click apply and wait for the done button to activate it. When it click on it.
    6. Quit disk utility.

    Create the installation program

Open the Terminal in the Utilities folder. Choose according to the command line appropriate (in red) on the OS X installer you want. Paste this entire command line by underneath at the Terminal prompt:

    Order for macOS Sierra:

    sudo/Applications/Install\ macOS\ Sierra.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia--volume/Volumes/MyV--applicationpath/Applications/Install\ macOS\ Sierra.app

    Order for El Capitan:

    sudo/Applications/Install\ OS\ El\ Capitan.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia--volume/Volumes/MyVolume--applicationpath/Applications/Install\ OS\ El\ Capitan.app X\ X\

    Order for Yosemite:

    sudo/Applications/Install\ OS\ Yosemite.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia--volume/Volumes/MyVolume--applicationpath/Applications/Install\ OS\ Yosemite.app X\ X\

    Control of Mavericks:

    sudo/Applications/Install\ OS\ Mavericks.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia--volume/Volumes/MyVolume--applicationpath/Applications/Install\ OS\ Mavericks.app X\ X\

Press RETURN. You will be asked your admin password. It won't echo on the Terminal window. Press RETURN again. Wait for the prompt to the Terminal, meaning that the process is complete. It takes a while to complete. Be patient.
