  You left out which version of DirectX has been shown.

  As far as I know, your Intel 945GM should support DirectX 9 and because you have XP sp3, you must have at least DirectX 9 installed.

  Not to complicate things.  It is really as easy as adding the physical drive and selecting the one-way glass, given what you have so far.

  Of course - backups should always be verified (image of the system if possible) before doing anything.  While you might lose data by READING this for various reasons - you increase the risk when you start to play with the data in real time.  ;-)

After the last update for windows and ATI, I had problems to read my games - some don't is not loading, some give me access violations, others do not go full-screen. Initially, they were access violations and some games would not work, I have the update and reinstall it and other games would get the access violation? Now I can't load games 'Titanic', 'Travel', 'Nancy Drew - lights camera curses'. -No message, just a flickering on the screen, then the game ends.   Basically speaking, Dell officially supports Windows 2000 and Windows XP on Dell Latitude D610 (and other models of Dx10).

  However it can really run Windows Vista and 7 at least, as long as you max out the RAM (2 GB, 2 x 1 GB, can be purchased at a great price in eBay) and install the drivers, in particular graphics drivers, look in Device Manager and see what drivers are needed manually.

  If you're lucky to have a D610 with ATi graphics card then you can even run Windows 8 and 10 with all drivers available, and I can tell you that it won't be slow dog not unlike a lot of people say, I don't have something similar (a HP Compaq nx8220) in common use. Keep as lean as possible (not bloatwares, anti-virus etc.) system, and it will serve you well.

  What anti-virus program do you use?  If you do not, or if it is outdated, because you have not paid for a subscription, I would suggest you uninstall and install Microsoft Security Essentials free instead.  It updates everyday, but never requires a subscription or payment, and it's free.
