When you do Storage VMotion?

More than a question of best practices.

But when you do a storage VMotion, you tend to live while the production environment is running or you wait until scheduled maintenance?

Just curious, as I've heard its fine to use living in the environment where it works similar to VMotion where the VM & Guest OS stay online all the time. I wanted to just a second opinion.

its works fine... really... lol

The heart beats are something to provide VMware Tools - they are used by ESX servers in order to assess the health of the virtual machine and that's why you see great hosts of departure and destination - why they are not be seen I don't know, but this should not prevent you fast vMotioning form - this is only a warning and you can vmotion

  • WRT610N resets when you access storage

I try to add two external hard drives to my Linksys WRT610N.  The first is a Western Digital My Book 500 GB.  This drive works fine, can be mapped and accessible by all computers and drive domestic UPNP Blu Ray on my network.  It is formatted NTFS and still works fine.  on the storage-> record in the router configuration screen, it is labeled WD external 5000AAV.  I created the part and everything works fine.  Now, on the the problem drive.

I tried to add a new WD My Book 1 TB.  It presents itself as WD external 10EACS in routers storage options.  Initially, this disc has been formatted FAT 32.  I had plugged, but it would become unavailable from networked computers all the time.  I surely 'delete drive' and formatted in NTFS to see if it would help as I did with the smaller drive, old people.  to reconnect the hard drive for the router, he always appeared in FAT32 so I safely removed the disc again.  This caused the router resets automatically.  When the router power back, the binked USB symbol repeatedly for what seemed like 5 minutes after that the internet service was restored.  During the period of flashing, I couldn't connect to the smaller drive properly in network.  Now the drive appears in my storage routers settings, but its name of the partition, NTFS and the button "Create sharing" are all absent.  When I try a "refresh" nothing changes.  When I try to 'Remove the drive safely', the router resets.  Passage of 'Disc' for "Media Server" and then back to 'Disc' options will cause the router to blame.  How can I get this 1 TB network drive and connected consistantly.  I'm sick of resetting everything and start all over with custom settings each time the hard drive of 1 TB is de-energized.

Firm ware is the most recent version.  All IP addresses are static via a DHCP reservation.  Passwords have been customized and value.  Users are defined.  Two wireless networks have custom names, but the same password.  Before I converted the 1 TB drive to NTFS, I plugged on our laptop, ran a disk check, found many incomplete records that have been "resolved".  I analyzed and defragmented it too.

I had many problems with this whole new router and I'm getting very frustrated with it.  Sometimes in the past, I had give up by transfers of files from our mobile network.  I can't use my HDD for storage networking upward because of this.  I was reseting everything many times.  The entire system (both network printer) worked fine with old wrt54G.  Everything was shared by a 10 year machine, running windows 2000!  We wanted to accelerate, so we spent $ 300 million this Christmas on the WRT610N and a WUSB600N.  The WRT610N never served the NAS correctly (for BLU - Ray).  When the WUSB600N was connected to our laptop, it would never allow 'see us' the network printer plugged into the router (internal wireless laptops will be 'G').  I have been in the forums and received very little assistance.  CAN SOMEONE HELP ME PLEASE?

I called Linksys. After 1.5 hours on the phone, I finally got the answer I didn't want to hear.  The WRT610N does not support several hard drives.  You can only connect a hard drive at a time.

  • Storage vMotion and RDM

I have a question for you about storage vMotion. I have a virtual machine with a vmdk file and a RDM. I want to storage vmotion the vmdk file. There is also a file associated with the ROW pointer. How this pointer file is reassocie to the RDM? I'm evacuating small LUNS and move virtual machines to the largest lun.

On page 199 and 201 of the basic ESX Administrator's Guide, it states that, if I select "same as Source for a RDM, only the mapping file will be migrated. Have you done this before? I just wanted to see if anyone in the field has had an experience with this process.

    7. If you chose to move the virtual machine configuration file and virtual disks, select a disc format, and then click

    Next.

    Description of the option

Same as Source to use the format of the original virtual disk.

If you select this option for a RDM in physical or virtual drive

compatibility mode, only the mapping file is migrated.

Thin provisioned using the format thin to save storage space. The thin virtual disk use as

storage space because it needs for its initial implementation. When the virtual disk

needs more space, it can grow in size up to its maximum allowed of capacity.

This option is not available for RDM in physical compatibility mode. If you

Select this option for a virtual RDM compatibility mode, the ROW is

converted to a virtual disk. RDM converted virtual disks cannot be

    converted into RDM.

Thick allocate an amount fixed disk space for the virtual disk. The virtual

drive in thick format does not change its size and from the beginning

occupies the entire data store space for her.

This option is not available for RDM in physical compatibility mode. If you

Select this option for a virtual RDM compatibility mode, the ROW is

converted to a virtual disk. RDM converted virtual disks cannot be

    converted into RDM.

    Thank you

    Savoy6

    Hi Savoy6,

When you sVmotion a virtual machine with a disc RDM, the pointer file is re-created on the new location and points to the raw LUN.

Take a look at this kb for more information.

  • Storage vmotion, between data warehouses when the block size is different

    Hi all

I would like to know, is it possible to do a vmotion of storage between two data warehouses, when they have different block sizes. The case is as a former vmfs data store 3 which has been upgraded direct to vmfs5 there, but since it has been updated it maintains its own block size. While the newly created vmfs datastore 5 a block size of 1 MB.

Thus, storage Vmotion will work in this case? It will fail OR will be with degraded performance?

Finally, storage vmotion is possible even if you do not have a cluster DRS for storage?

    Thank you

    Yes you can!

  • VMotion displays "unable to access file" when you try to migrate a VM running using shared LUN

3 nodes running on ESX 3.5 vmotion shows 'cannot access file'... vmdk when you attempt to migrate from ESX1 to ESX3 on a running virtual machine. Both ESX servers share a common LUN. I'm going through storage LUNS on ESX2 ESX1 local storage. I am able to do so if the virtual machine is turned off, but I get the error when the virtual machine is running.

You can't do a vmotion off local shared storage.  You will have to stop the virtual machine and do a cold migration, or you can do it live with sVMotion

    Steve,

Thanks a lot for the link to this article.
    It was most helpful.

I also found this forum useful post:
    http://www.techsupportforum.com/Networking-Forum/networking-support/114373-cant-map-new-network-drive.html

In particular, he said to check the event log of the computer that you are trying to connect to (the remote computer) to search for an event ID 2011, which would be entered in the time you finally tried to connect and does not.
I did alt-click on the icon MY COMPUTER (from the remote computer) and the menu HANDLE, click the EVENT VIEWER folder (in the left pane), and then the SYSTEM folder under that.
On the right pane, I found an ad for the event ID 2011 at the time wherever I finally tried to connect.

To test this, I went to the VISTA laptop and tried to connect the computer to Office XP again, which gives a different error message on the VISTA laptop.
When I went back on the XP desktop I tried to connect to and looked again to the event log, of course ANOTHER event ID 2011 has been registered with the new time of my additional attempt to connect.

He confirmed that it was likely that the IRPStackSize was the problem, as your proposed article.

Then I printed article how DO TO SAVE AND RESTORE the REGISTER to: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322756/
then backed up the registry (both by running a restore system to register and by exporting from the top level of the regedit).

I then went in regedit on the desktop in XP for the
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CURRENTCONTROLSET\SERVICES\LANMANSERVER\Parameters file described in your article.
There was NOT an entry for IRPStackSize in the right pane, so I followed the instructions in the add - it and change it to decimal 15.
I rebooted and tried to connect but still got the same error.
The article said that the default value is 15, so I assumed that adding input IRPStackSize to 15 has not changed anything.

So I went into regedit and changed the value of IRPStackSize of 15 to 18, restarted and it solved the problem.

I found that the following articles is also useful in the resolution of this problem (aside from the one you gave):

    http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/285089

    http://www.smartcomputing.com/editorial/article.asp?article=articles/archive/r0803/10r03/10r03.asp

I typed this all this while this might help others who may encounter this same
Error "not enough server storage is available to process this command" when you try to
Map a network drive (or just try to connect) to a XP computer from another computer.

    Thanks much for the lead.

  • You can desktop storage vmotion view 4.6?

I think that the answer is no because they use linked clones, but I wanted to ask anyway...

Complete desktop storage vmotion, you can as far as I know but related cloens are not supported.   From a point of view linked clone, you can use the reblance option to place them on another data store.

    Hola,

Storage vMotion none are compatible only instant con, y entendiendo as composer works a base of Snapshots, clearly no ambos are posible usar.

  • Storage VMotion, leaving the additional disks when they are

I want to move a virtual machine but, let one of the additional attached disks where it is.

When you use the interactive for svmotion, at this stage, «if you want to stay with the VM disks then skip this step...» You want to place the disks individually. I say Yes and identify the additional path on the vmdk disk.

    He then asks the destination...

    1. I think that if I enter the current data (source) to the destination store, this additional disc will just stay where he is. Is this correct?

    2. I also want to make sure that when svmotion sees that I chose the data source as a destination store, it leaves just here. Specifically, I want to make sure that it is not yet really moving the disc but in the same data store. It is a big drive and I don't have enough space on the data store if she done something like this.

The answer lies in the help file for svmotion one thing I noticed, is that the syntax is correct, except that single quotes should be in double quotes ".» Other than that, the command line below will do exactly as you want, and that's essentially what you thought. Files will not overwrite themselves, then it will not try to copy the same disc in the same data store.

Move the storage for a virtual machine on new_datastore, but let the disc 1

    and 2 in old_datastore:

    SVMotion - datacenter = "My DC" - vm = "[old_datastore] myvm/myvm.vmx:"

    new_datastore' - discs = "[old_datastore] myvm/myvm_1.vmdk:"

    "old_datastore, myvm/myvm_2.vmdk: old_datastore '.

  • Storage DVR when you use HTTP dynamic streaming

    Hello

When you use DVR with RTMP streaming flow could / should be registered as a single large file on the server, but when using HTTP streaming stream will consist of many files of chuncked; in this case how the flow will be backup, FMS 4 will bring together the pieces? will unlikely, that pieces of flow be saved? in this case, I wonder what tool could be used to access and make videos of him. What is the exact of the FMS4 behavior when dealing with storage of DVR HTTP streaming?

    Thank you

I want to correct you here: HTTP Streaming application are served as a segmented files, but recording is great single file whereas you have just one segment - if you gave segmentduration then you would multiple files. I hope this clears your doubts regarding the DVR HTTP Streaming.
