I get this error every time I open LR, "Lightroom encountered and error during playback of sound preview cache and need to stop smoking" and the application does not open. He said LR would try and correct this error the next time I opened it, but the error remains. I tried uninstalled and installed the application and the error remains. I use Windows 8.
Manually delete the cache of the preview of your user folder.

LR has encountered an error when reading the preview cache and needs to stop smoking.
I have the trial version of Lightroom 30 days. I was able to use it for a week, but the last weeks of 1,5 to 2, it was locked up and that gives this error message. How to solve the problem? And how to reset the free 30 day trial? I wish I had the time using the product before deciding on the annual contract.
"LR has encountered an error when reading the preview cache and needs to stop smoking. Lightroom will attempt to solve this problem, the next time it starts. »
Thank you.
Delete the cache of the overview of the Lightroom folder in your pictures folder if you used the default location. It has the extension .lrdata.
You cannot reset the trial period.

How can I fix it?
Hi melotam,
It seems that something in your preview cache has been altered. No worries - you can delete preview cache and Lightroom are going to rebuild it, even if it may take some time, depending on the size of your catalog.
To remove the preview cache, follow these steps:
1. quit Lightroom.
2. in your operating system, look for your Lightroom Catalog. Catalogs are generally/Pictures/Lightroom on Mac and my Pictures\Lightroom on Windows.
3. Locate the folder whose name ends in "Previews.lrdata" and delete it. (note, may you enjoy a folder whose name ends with "Smart Previews.lrdata." You shouldn't need to remove that one).
Once the preview folder is deleted, restart Lightroom. You can see gray thumbnails in the grid for a few moments that Lightroom starts to rebuild your preview cache.
Let us know if that helps.
Kind regards

Can I get an explanation of what past?
You must remove the preview Cache.
It is located in the same folder as the catalog in Lightroom. The name of the cache an extract ends with Previews.LRDATA and should be deleted. Not to be confused with *. LRCAT, which should not be deleted.

I let close put it keeps appearing
I guess you know where your file catalog (lrcat). In the same folder is a folder of lrdata of previews that you must delete or rename in the Explorer, then start LR again.
If I made erroneous assumptions that above, sorry, and we will go back on it from the beginning.

Your catalog is stored on the hard drive.
By default, it is stored in Pictures\Lightroom
You must browse to folder Pictures\Lightroom via File Explorer and delete the Previews.lrdata folder.

Hi all
My computer crashed with open lightroom since the restart, I get a msg "LR encounted an error while reading its preview cache and needs to stop smoking.
I would be grateful for any suggestion
Thank you very much
In the same folder that your catalog file is a subfolder whose name ends with Previews.LRDATA. Delete this subfolder. Do not remove your catalog file (whose name ends in. LRCAT)

Have a problem with Lightroom 5.4. Given that the program crashed yesterday, will not start, it comes up with the message "Lightroom has encountered an error when reading the preview cache and need to quit." "Lightroom will attempt to solve this problem, the next time he throws." Except that it isn't, I get the same message and the program closes. Anyone know what I can do to fix it? Can not backup, can't do anything.
There are dozens of discussions in this forum that describe the fix

Lightroom has encountered an error when reading the preview cache and needs to stop smoking. Help, please
Hi crystalc,
It seems that the preview cache has become corrupted.
You must go to the location where your catalog is stored via finder/File Explorer and get rid of the file ending with Previews.lrdata (not .lrcat)
Default location of the catalog is under Pictures\Lightroom

Error: "LR has encountered an error when reading the preview cache and need to quit."
Trying to open it, a message "LR has encountered an error when reading the preview cache and needs to stop smoking. LR will attempt to fix the next time it starts. "apppears and it stops. Tried many launches and the same error appears. Help!

OK, go to the Lightroom folder (in images by default) and delete the folder/file ending with the extension.lrdata. Previews have somehow become corrupt.

The message continues: "LR will attempt to solve this problem, the next time that he launched" this started after I tried to load an add-on which identifies duplicates for deletion. Unfortunately, stop and restart LR5 guard going in a circle. LR5 turns on W7 professional, 64-bit. If I uninstall LR5, I'll be able to re - install from creative cloud and that will fix the problem? I deleted the offending module already.

Close Lightroom and navigate to your Lightroom Catalog folder.
The default location is usually in images.
Remove the file in the catalog folder that ends Previews.lrdata
Do not touch the catalog itself that ends.lrcat
Then try to re-launch of Lightroom.
