  You don't need the files xmp during the passage of LR to Photoshop. Right click on the image or in the develop module, click Photo > edit in... According to what you have set in the preferences of the image then opens like FFT, JPEG or PSD - 8 bit / 16 bit - and the new TIFF file for example automatically will return to sitting next to the original RAW LR library. If you are exporting a RAW file edited to the desktop to JPG/TIFF then changes will be permanently stamped in the EXIF of the created files.

If you modify a file outside the LR and that is not already in the LR library, say by locating the RAW file in Explorer and then open it directly in ACR/Photoshop, then LR will have no idea what you did except in LR, you choose to import the image later. Remember though, this is one of the examples where you will need to configure save metadata in xmp (at bridge) so that when you import the edited outside the file RAW LR, LR will read the xmp file changes and save it in its own database.
