Why are most of my grayed out icons and my programs do not appear in all programs on the start menu?

My computer crashed the other day. I returned with a system restore. I have scanned for viruses. Now most of my icons (computer desktop and folders) is grayed out. When I click on "all programs" in the start menu, none is listed even though they are still on my computer and still work.

Hi homeWJ,

Method 1

See the Microsoft article below to download and install the fix, check if it helps.

When you point to "Programs" on a Windows XP-based computer, the program list does not appear, or the list of programs is empty

http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/941248

Method 2

If the previous step fails, then analyze and remove any malware or computer virus infections and check if that helps.

You can also use Microsoft Security databases to scan your computer

How to get back all the icons on my desktop. I tried a click right, but in vain. I also ran a scan complete antivirus. any help would be appreciated.

Thank you Joel S. Before I could put your advice into practice a friend recommended a friend who advised me to do a system restore, which he said he would be happy to do it for me. So look like an easy option, I agreed. It seems to have solved the problem (fingers crossed), but now it seems that I need to format the hard drive. If you have any tips on formatting hard drive I'm all ears. Thank you Owen

  • Folder icon in all programs on the start menu

I tried to change the icons of the folders in all programs on the start menu. But after that, it has been restored. Nothing is left.

Hoping that windows can automatically display the icons of the programs installed on these files.

    Hello

I understand that you want to change the icons of folders in the files shows all programs menu.

You can change the icons of folders which are displayed in the file Explorer, but these changes will not be reflected in the access to the start menu.

However, you can use some 3rd 3rd party apps that can help you to do the same.

Note: Using third-party software, including hardware drivers can cause serious problems that may prevent your computer from starting properly. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the use of third-party software can be solved. Software using third party is at your own risk.

  • all desktop icons not missing, run any command in the start menu, can't create desktop shortcuts

All the desktop icons are missing, unable to create desktop shortcuts, without run command in the start menu... no info

If system restore is turned on and you can go back enough, restore the computer to an earlier date using Safe Mode.

Restart the computer and start typing the key F8, select Safe mode with command option. If you are prompted to select an operating system, use the arrow keys to select the right pair and press ENTER. Log in as administrator or with an account that has administrator credentials. At the command prompt, type % systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe, and then press ENTER. Follow the prompts to restore your computer to an earlier date.

  • What are the programs in the start menu in Windows 7

    Hello

Assuming that I get a new computer and I just installed Windows 7 and nothing else. What are the programs will then be in the start menu?

As the current state of things, my computer starts very slowly, so I don't want to uninstall something if it is vital to start Windows 7.

    Thank you

    JIMOA

While nothing in the Startup tab is vital to win it can prevent vital programs from functioning as expected.

And if you buy a new PC, it would normally win pre-installed and the manufacturer will have also included all kinds of utilities/Add-ons not less a trial anti-virus program

  • Delete the icons of the programs on the Start Menu that no longer exists on the computer

Original title: deliver all the Apps

    Hello

When I go into applications, there are a lot of them out there that doesn't exist anymore, or records in which they were, but they are like zombies.  How to clean this list?

Yes, it could be the case.

Most of the time, when make us any changes to the system, restart us the computer so that the changes are applied. But in this case, programs were already uninstalled from the computer and just program icons had to be removed. So Windows must have updated the parameters of the Solution Explorer so that changes to the Explorer (Start menu as well as office) are applied.

Please let us know in this regard.

  • Lag/slow loading icon in "Programs" in the Start Menu

Why should he wait a few seconds for the icons in all programs to load up in my menu start? I forced a rebuild of the cache of my icon, fresh win7 x 64 on AMD Phenom X 4 9950 4 GB RAM so no reason for this slow right?

It will be still much slower at any time rebuild you your icon cache: because rebuild the cache clears all the icons.  Then the next time, they should be displayed, the system must open each file in the menu start one by one and read the icon.  Because the hard disk is the slowest part of any computer, this causes a very significant delay.

The icon cache is also rebuilt (erased) when run cleaning disc and some other 3rd party systems cleaning.

It should be slower after any kind of reconstruction after the first screen, there should be a snapshot whenever you open the menu (unless you rebuild your new icon cache).

If this was helpful, please vote. If it solves the problem, please click on propose as answer. Thank you!

  • Recent programs on the start menu is not - don't know why?

I read the other posts and have not used "CCleaner", but have used other registry cleaner products. Any ideas how can I fix?

    Hi K_Wallett,

There may be not much that can be done for this, if the registry has been modified or corrupted/damaged. You can try one of the options is to perform a repair installation: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917964 however, before this just so that there is no other issue you will want to make sure you have all your programs, files, folders, and everything you don't want to lose saved on an external device. (just to be sure that your data are safe).

    Hi Carol,.
Your computer is probably infected by malicious software. Try the sequence of steps 1 and 2 in this virus/malware removal guide: http://www.selectrealsecurity.com/malware-removal-guide
It contains instructions which will remove the malware more. If you have any questions, just ask me. I hope this helps you.

  • Some icons on the start menu are missing after a remote desktop session in Windows 7

I use Win7 Pro SP1 and whenever I come back to my office after finishing a session desktop connection to my computer remotely, I noticed several of the icons in the all programs from the Start Menu section changed to default page icons. If I try to open any programs that are pinned to the start itself, it will indicate that the program cannot be found. Notepad and Calculator in particular to keep more victims of this problem.

I also noticed that the audio controller is disabled until I restart.

I found a batch file that will rebuild the icon cache, but this very annoying to have to keep doing it because I have to remote into my computer almost every morning for the daily scrum meetings we hold in a conference room.

Does anyone know a permanent fix?

  • some of my (links) shortcut in the start menu programs are "empty". How can I fix the problem? Ron

Links to programs on the start menu appear as "empty" when I run the mouse over them.  I've recreated some of them, but it's not the biggest problem of why it happened in the first place.  Help, please.  Win XP Pro SP3 IE 8.0 Dell Dimension 2400.

    Hi RonaldPease,

    ·         Did you do changes on the computer before the show?

    ·         What do you mean by "links to programs on the start menu appear as"empty"when I run the mouse over them"?

    ·         You are able to launch programs by clicking on them?

Perform a system restore and check if the problem persists.
