If you reload XP if often as you notice a minor problem like that, then you really need to focus on why you need to reload XP so often rather than the absence of sound when it happens.

If I had to guess, I would say that the drivers on the disk are more compatible with XP (especially once the updates and service packs are installed), or the default configuration has, for some reason, the value of having its active or disabled.  The method by which resolve you the problem - and what is (I guess you can fix or are the lack of sound, why you reload XP again and again hoping that will fix the problem) should help identify why it occurs first.  If you can't fix it and that's the reason why you are reloading again and again then the problem is likely drivers or it could also be a hardware problem (very probably the sound card).  First update the drivers.  Contact the computer manufacturer to see if there is a diagnostic tool to test the sound card (or it may need to be repaired - and your options may depend on whether the card is a card separate or integrated to the motherboard - and the manufacturer should be able to say that both).

    This is probably due to a missing codec.  Simulators have not the same level of multimedia support direct devices do.

    I suggest you to uninstall the sound drivers of your computer manually and then reinstall the drivers and check.
