  Hi brassman.

  If you have a photo paper or another type of paper other paper selected in the printer driver, or perform a duplex (two-sided) printing, the printer uses a combination of unit color ink tanks to produce gray on the page.  If you select the grayscale printing option in the printer driver and print recto on plain paper, the printer will use the largest reservoir of black ink in the unit to produce the text/images on the page.

  If you receive a low warning on one or more of the ink tanks in the ink unit and must continue to print, you can disable the printer ink level detection function, so you can continue printing until you are able to replace the bass in/out of the ink tanks. To do this, press on and press and hold STOP/RESET or RESUME/CANCEL button on the printer for at least 5 seconds, then release.  You will need this procedure for each ink tank which is low/out of ink.  Once the inks are replaced with Canon genuine ink tanks, the printer ink level detection function is reactivated. In addition, please note that all ink tanks must be in the printer at all times to allow him to work, even if some of the ink tanks are low or ink.
