Why do I get "error 1325." Microsoft "is not a valid short file name" when I try to install the 1.41 Borderlands update? "

I am running Vista Home Premium SP2.  I bought the game Borderlands of the year edition DVD (or CD, I can't remember which).  To get the downloadable content, the instructions direct users to a website that says that you should update to 1.41.  After downloading the update of this website (several times) and try to install (including using the suggestions on support.microsoft.com/kb/2438651), I always get "error 1325." Microsoft "is not a valid short file name"

I suggest you to refer to the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base and check if it works.

Is there a valid way to uninstall this, given the problem - or an another workaround?

I hope that it is not bad form to reply to my post (!), but I am pleased to announce that this Microsoft utility fixed my problem. I ran it, it looked for my system, then asked me if I wanted to uninstall or install a program, I chose to uninstall, it sought then yet once showed me a list of installed programs. I have selected SQL Server Compact 3.5 for Devices in the list. They asked me if I want to uninstall it (I think that - already done and I do not remember)-anyway, I welcomed the utility for uninstall and there was no problem. It is very useful. I don't know if the source of the error and this solution is specific to windows 7 64 bit, which is what my DELL Latitude E6530 is running, or if it is a general problem and fix. I'll never know the root cause, but at least I can go forward.

Unfortunately, I cannot even load the previously recommended THAT MSFT software to solve this error.  I also tried to install the software as 'Run as Administrator' and in 'Safe Mode '.  Even if I could not load the software recommended to MSFT, I was able to install iTunes to Apple through Apple Software Update, I guess, that they do not use Windows Installer.

With the new structure of junction there is several files or links to the same folder across file system, if it is a folder authorization number which specific files/links are I need to remove restrictions?

Any help would be appreciated, if not I'll have to do a clean install and individually reinstall each piece of software... Thank you.

I think I found the solution for this point, because I have just encountered the same problem in our environment and here's what I did to solve it:

-Create a higher level permissions at the root of the folder redirection (for example \\servername\mydocredirfolder): grant the Group authenticated users the following permissions and apply it to "this folder only" ALLOW: list folders/read data, reading, reading attributes, read extended attributes, create files / add data

I think the MSI is trying to read the free space on the disk on the server, but it cannot because it tries to access the folder where your my documents redirection is sitting.

    Good luck!

You also backups of ALL the changes that Advanced SystemCare and Cleaner of registry CCleaner have or had ALWAYS made to your computer? [1]

If this is not the case, only a clean install of Windows can solve your problem now IMHO. No, a repair installation [upgrade on-site AKA] do not solve this problem.

[1] your misguided use of all registry cleaners certainly plays a role here. TIP: If you still think again your registry database must be cleaned, repaired, amplified, to the point, healed, twisted, fixed, enlarged, "swept" or optimized (it isn't), read http://aumha.net/viewtopic.php?t=28099 and draw your own conclusions.
