I tried setting up my external hard drive and transfer just a couple of files just to see if it would work. I sent them to my desktop from my laptop and they also went to my documents, but once the hard drive is disconnected files will not open. I do not know what I'm dong wrong as I am not very computor spirit, so that the answers would be useful in silly English thank you. Sorry to be so long-winded.

  I understand that you have copied your files on an external drive from your old computer.

  You tried to copy the files to the new computer, but when you disconnect the external hard drive the files are no longer accessible.

  I think that you have created or copied a shortcut to the new computer and not the actual files.  When you're logged out outside the new computer had more disk access to open files.

  I would like to redo the copy and when you finished externally, log out and then try again.

  There seems to be a confusion of terms here: the catalog is where LR stores all of its information (that your designated as LR library in your original post).

  While you were on the road, did you use LR to add keywords to photos, or have you used another tool? If you have used LR, you already have a catalog on the laptop, which you can then import into your main LR catalog (using import to catalogue option in the file menu). Let us know if you get stuck anywhere.

  How is formatted the external hard drive? Is the file system on the drive Mac OS extended (journaled) or other system files?  Is the drive directly connected by USB or similar, or is it a SIN?

  This hard drive is formatted in FAT32? This may explain why you have a limit of transfer of files (4 GB) at a time. If that's the case reformat the drive in NTFS format (first save your data). Hard drive formatted in NTFS will not file transfer limit and will be more stable. Hope this helps you.   Built-in the Mac mini hard drives transfer the file to 60 MB/s (writing and reading) and I wanted to get better speed of file transfer, so I bought an SSD that is going to be inside with an another HARD drive of 3 TB for archiving my files. The housing is connected by USB3.0 (5 Gb/s) for the Mac mini.

  [HDD-> Archives, files that I have does not open very often] - speed around 150 MB/s write and 150 MB/sec in reading

  So I did some benchmarks on my new Setup, and the speed is not really what I expected. Transfer of file max speed I have achieved is about 100 MB/sec in writing on the external SSD plugged into the mac mini. This transfer has been filed since an iMac 21 "2011 with an SSD (with almost the same speed read/write than the box) so it's quite disappointing.

  It is possible that the Mac has a 'file transfer speed limit' is somewhere? Or whatever else that could affect that?

  I have recently updated to El Capitan, and as part of this upgrade that my photos have been migrated from iPhoto to the Photos.  I just checked the current location of my library and I found two.  One is named Photo library and which resembles the pictures one use which makes sense.  However, I also have a file called iPhoto library and it is listed as a library migrated under file type.

  Yes, if you want to free up your internal disk storage moving two libraries of the iPhoto library you have migrated your external drive and the new library of Photos.

  The two libraries share the storage for the original images and previews.  As long as one of the libraries is always on the internal disk and using storage, storage is not released: see: Photos saves disk space to share images with your iPhoto or Aperture - Apple Support libraries

  Drag the two libraries to your external drive, then double click the pictures library to open it in photos and test it. Once you are convinced that the copied library works well, you can delete the original in the internal drive.  Do the same for the copied iPhoto Library if you have installed iPhoto.
