  It seems that the culprit was a setting in Tab Mix Plus. In Options > events > tabs > content emphasis during loading non-empty page has not been verified. When checked, Firefox works as expected. At least as expected by me.

  When I connect to a company website that I want to buy a product, I no longer get the 'padlock' in the lower right of my screen. Locked meant site safe and unblocked meant not to use. Now I get no symbol. It doesn't matter if I also signed on their secure site. (llbean, cabela, amazon, 1800 flowers) all flopped in this regard. Even as I write this I'm not getting a small lock so I don't even know if this is a secure site.
