Why FF spends CPU both on google search results?

I have the problem that Firefox spends more than 10% of CPU on the display of a static page like google search results. I use Firefox on a late 2012, MacBook Pro and the constant use of the CPU so drains the battery and produces a lot of heat after some time.

Steps to reproduce:
1. start Firefox in safe mode, disable all extensions
2. Enter "why ff is spending cpu both on google search results ' in the address bar
3. watch how the Firefox CPU usage goes to a constant 10%

Additional information:
It seems that other users have experienced the same problem too, for example,
https://support.Mozilla.org/en-us/questions/954376

https://support.Mozilla.org/en-us/questions/960806

https://support.Mozilla.org/en-us/questions/957512

However, the systematic response to questions was always restart Firefox in safe mode, disable all plugins, etc, etc. I tried everything, nothing works.

Workaround solution:
For me, the problem occurs only on the page of google search results. I don't know what is special about this particular Web page and show why he needs so much CPU. It may be that Firefox uses a lot of CPU on others too many static Web pages. However, a simple cure for my problems (for now) is to move to some other site when Firefox is idle. CPU utilization drops at least < 1% almost immediately after that.

Hi klopps, I don't get on Windows 7 (screen shot attached; tried both connected and disconnected).

Google sometimes run experiments on its poster page causing people to have results different and/or a different behavior. Disconnect and clear all cookies from Google can give you a default experience, or maybe not, they don't advertise these things.

If you want to try it:

Just a page on the site, either:

  • Right click and select View Page Info > Security > "View Cookies".
  • Menu Tools > Page Info > Security > "View Cookies".

In the dialog box that opens, you can delete all Google cookies individually.

Then when you reload, bypass the cache of Firefox using the command + shift + r.

Regarding the 3 wires you linked, it seems that everyone has a unique number. It doesn't seem to be a single explanation that applies to each of them.

Suite response cor - el will lead you to find that Autopager is the cause of this.

I saw it on 2 different PCs, with 2 different solutions!
Long story short (note that between each test, I restarted firefox) I think that the problem is in the 'norm' for google, wind Li.

My advice is to use the full version of Autopager, right-click on the icon of the AP > uncheck the 'active', then our for something and create your own rule (you'll probably have to create your "blind" rule because it is possible that the blue test button will not work). After that the restoration of the 'active' State and the problem should be fixed.
That did the trick on a W7/firefox Desktop 3.6.18/AP 0.7.1.0

Prior to this on a laptop Windows XP/firefox 3.6.18/AP 0.7.1.4 I used "auto", "verify the information on the page" and said yes to use a rule (jeau I think), but he started that after i unchecked the "uncover the corresponding rules online. I don't know why.

In both cases, I stopped using the standard, that's why I think that the problem is there.

No need to delete cookies, clear cache or use the standard theme or relatives already open tabs.

    Hope that helps!

  • I see that google search results, scroll to the bottom and they disappear. Why?

All of a sudden when I use Firefox, I get a list of Google search results, scroll to the bottom and poof I see only a blank page. What is going on?

    Hello jpachner,

This happens only in Google or you have noticed other web pages? Most of these issues could be due to some changes in configuration or plugins.

Try Firefox Safe mode to see if the problem goes away. Firefox Safe mode is a troubleshooting mode that temporarily disables hardware acceleration, restores some settings and disables add-ons (extensions and themes).

If Firefox is open, you can restart Firefox Safe mode in the Help menu:

    • In Firefox 29,0 and above, click on the menu button

      click Help

then select restart with disabled modules.

If Firefox is not running, you can start Firefox in Mode safe mode as follows:

    • On Mac: Hold the option key during the startup of Firefox.

When the Firefox Safe Mode window appears, select "start mode safe."

If the problem is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, theme or hardware acceleration. Please follow the steps described in the section Troubleshooting extensions, themes and problems of hardware acceleration to resolve common Firefox problems to find the cause.

To exit safe mode of Firefox, exit Firefox (not just close the window) and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.

  • Huge topics (URL links) appearing in Google search results

Since about a week or two ago (URL links) topics that appear in the Google search results I was huge.
I don't think this inconvenience comes from Google, because it does not happen with Internet Explorer 8. Furthermore, I believe that Google would not leave this question open for so long. In addition, it is less obvious when Firefox opens Yahoo. In short, it is a matter of "Firefox with Google".

It's a good idea to test things in safe mode, but please be aware that not every change of setting will be reset in safe mode. So, reset can still solve the problem. Another thing you can try removes cookies (especially those estate of google), and the zoom reset, something could have with that before. • How can I get 12 of Firefox to open a link from Google search results?

Since the upgrade to version 12.0, whenever I click on certain links in the browser just "recharge" the same page, as I'm on instead of loading the new page in the same tab. When this happens, it's not to open the link in a new tab or the tab on a window, instead, just for a second, I said 'connection' and has the circular busy light, and then I'm right where I was before. In order to actually follow a link, I'll have to, click background, and then click Open in a new tab.

On many Web sites, the links follow as usual and open the new page in the same tab. Others have not, however, like the google search results page. I wonder if it's something to do with the new feature anti-double tab and if yes, how do I disable that? I'm on OS x 10.6.8. Thank you.

Google sets several cookies, however, if you delete and you are not signed in, then you get results for your browser, language, geographic location, etc. and not for you personally.

Google has a tool that shows you where your page comes up in a search? I remember seeing some thing like that in the webmaster tools some time ago, at least I think that's where he was, or perhaps analytical.

  • My Google search results screen is suddenly very small in Firefox 35.0.1

When I've upgraded to this version of Firefox, my default search engine has become Yahoo. I then used your directions to move to Google, but the display of results on Google are extremely low, while other search engines results remain at normal size. I don't want to start the zoom to increase the results display as then the Web sites I will be too large. I'm a consultant in marketing communications and must use Google to help my clients with SEO features.

I tried to attach screenshots of Firefox and Bing search results so you could see the difference, but they do not load. I'm on an iMac 10.7.5

Thank you both for responding. I am aware of the functionality of Zoom, but not the non-strabisme that I'll add to my toolbar.

Zoom was not the way I wanted to go because I didn't want to change how other Web sites appears. And did not constantly be buzzing in and out.

However, in the meantime, the problem disappeared. Not sure why it happened and why it disappeared, but for now it works correctly and all right.

  • Google search results on Mac OSX - disappeared when returning to page

Yosemite running on a MacBook Air. When I search with Google (my default), the results appear normally. However, once I click on an ad, go ahead and then return the results of the search, the search results page is empty. Refreshing works OK, but why would this happen? It is these - last month - but also consistent and what happens with Firefox (vs Chrome or Safari).

Does anyone else have this problem?

Maybe you have increased your zoom level on the results page recently? I suspect that because there is an old problem with going back to the search results page and blank might as well have it, and it seems to occur only when you use a zoom level high on Google with 'instant prediction results' (the default setting). When to return to this page, Firefox glitches when you restore the cache in memory page, in fact, you can see the results for a fraction of a second before it empty out.

Assuming you like your zoom level and enjoy using the instant prediction results, then the solution is to disable the part of the Firefox cached in memory by changing a setting under the covers.

    (1) in a new tab, type or paste Subject: config in the address bar and press return / enter. Click on the button promising to be careful.

    (2) in the search above the list box, type or paste sess and make a pause so that the list is filtered

    (3) double-click the preference browser.sessionhistory.max_total_viewers and change the value from-1 to 0 (that's a zero).

(Please change not all other parameters similar to 0-sounding or you can disable the ability of Firefox to save/restore your tabs and windows open).

Then reload the page of Google results and the test. Who will fix this for you?

  • By clicking on the Google search results within a framework gives white screen

Back to this story is that I use Firefox and I use a simple frames home page where my fave links (ebay, craigslist links primarily) are on the left of the screen frame and google opens up on top of the right frame. When I do a google search, it does what it does and gives me his search results. Normally, when I click on one of the Google results the rest left image and the right will go to the link I clicked on. Not today, if. All I get is a blank screen and in the status bar. The left frame is still there. In this case on 2 computers. That is to say, doesn't have a problem. Is Google? Firefox? Or a combination of both?

Here is the code for my main frames page. I don't need to register a 2nd.
