  Thanks for your help - but I just found out the problem. In the advanced sharing settings, I forgot to select Enable turn off password protected sharing. The second I chose no-all the files and folders that I set to share on the Windows 7 system became available.

  I am trying to unzip some files and folders and it works fine on my computer with Windows XP. However, when you use Windows Vista I can't because there are folders and files with the same name. After an internet search, it seems that the only suggestion is to extract the files in separate folders which then would allow them to keep the same name. The problem is I want what they in the same folder and they need to have the names they have.

  NOTE: I do have two files with the same name in the same folder, I have a folder and a file with the same name. I would have thought that this would be acceptable because they are two things separate, and given that it's great under XP.

  You are right, if I make a file and a text file with the same name, it works fine. However, when I try to extract the files I need it tells me that there is already a file with the same name as the folder.   Yes, Windows 8 has a new timer feature which will automatically delete Windows.old files after a period of 4 weeks since the upgrade. The idea is to avoid the waste of space giving you plenty of time to get what you need out of the folder and delete those that sit for months or even years.

  Since it's just been 1-2 days of update process, you can activate the "hidden objects" to see if the Windows.old files appear.

  As you open the file Explorer, click view and check the hidden items

  In addition, if you use third-party antivirus program control the log of activities see if there is any action taken at the time where the files have disappeared.  Most of the antivirus program automatically deletes the default files. You can change these settings, however, it is not recommended.
