  I gave PS CS5 access to 80% of the memory of the machine (about 8.5 of 12 GB).  Yet, it seems to (at most) use of 3.5 GB of ram, using 1 or more GB of scratch disk.

  Your laptop is old laptop model and OS can be installed using recovery media only.
  External ODD cannot be recognized as boot device and you won't be able to use it.

  See operating manuals and there you will find a list of all compatible ratings, buy one and replace.
  Replacement isn't complicated and you can do it alone.
