However if I save the jpg to tiff using IrfanView (using the default option), the number of colors unique remains same (272662).

  Colors never change when recording in TIFF format. Colors have already been changed when the JPEG format was opened. The TIFF record is irrelevant.

  You can not edit a raw file in Photoshop and save back to the raw file, only in a new file, this is why there is edit.tif version of the file.

  Lightroom is a non-destructive Editor so that the original file and the fixtures in the LR or the XMP are the changes you see in LR.  Photoshop is a destructive Editor, so the pixels in the file are actually changed in the image file, rather than the instructions stored in an XMP file.

  The types of changes, you can do in LR are different from what is done in PS so pick what you are doing in each and wait for two different files if you use the two to work on a photo.

  I returned to a catalogue of different previous > same computer, same PSE10 and selected a previous version of consisting of the original > raw file and saved them edited ed - 1.jpg file and selected the original .raw, complete edition open file it opens in ARW 6.7 as before, then opens the file in the editor of PSE10 and tried to save it as a .jpg file (I did obviously in the last days at the most) (not changes to the computer or programs) and it does NOT OPEN AS a file .jpg as DESCRIBED above.
