Windows 7 - defragmentation
The operating system of my computer is Windows 7. I have professional CCleaner through which I scan my computer once a week. Do I have to use a Defrag tool to defrag my computer regularly. If the answer is Yes please be good enough to recommend available free defragmentation software.

No, it's done automatically by Windows.

The program that I use is called Defraggler, it was created by piriform LTD and it is a simplified version of windows Disk Defragmenter. It is not defragment my disk correctly. It is said that it has completed the defrag but it's still 23% defragmented files defragmentation. I pressed defrag again and again but he still took no action and said always full defragmentation when clearly there is no. I myself had a look at the options and settings and it should properly according to them. Any help will be kind of you. Thank you.

I ran defrag for 8 hours, it's frustrating to be unable to monitor ar progress how much has been accomplished. Is there anyway you can visually monitor or verify progress. I had to cancel after 8 hours, the following question has done a defrag take place?
I preferred the XP process where you can follow our progress and plan accordingly - any help much appreciatedThe monitor/graph of progress you make reference to a missing in Vista, due to popular demand.
And Defrag in Vista runs in the context anyway.

Files dump debugging and log files to install in the disk cleanup window
The two points above appear in my disk cleanup window, and I wonder if it is o: k to remove. The first occupies a space of 283 KB and the other 2537 KB. The description of these two files in the disk cleanup window is "files created by Windows.
I have a second question: I have about 5 GB left as free space on my hard drive of 'C '. If this is considered sufficient, or should I get more? I am a senior retired and only use the computer for basic items.

"Debug dump files" are copies of the contents of your computer's memory.
When a program crashes, it will sometimes "dump" all or part of the
contents of the RAM to a file on your hard drive. The file is useful to
a technical support person who tries to understand why the program
crashed. (Most of the tech support people have no idea what to do with a dump
file.)Unless you have been asked to submit a dump for inspection file, feel free

These files as well.On the question of how much free space on the disk is enough... There is no

I'm running my Windows Disk Defragmenter. I want to compress my files to increase the performance of my PC. I'm not very savvy computer! The error indicates... "Disk Defragmenter has detected that Chkdsk is scheduled to run on the volume: (c). Please run Chkdsk/f. Can someone make me step by step to understand this? I could not defrag in months!
Hello
You need to click on start-> Run & Type-> chkdsk /f c: it will ask you "Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. You want to schedule this volume to check the next time the system restarts? (Y/N) "Press on Y for Yes. Restart your computer. It will check your system until you get the login screen. Once this is done, connect and try Disk Defrag - it should start.
I hope this helps.

Please forgive me if I am posting this in the wrong place...
I get messages in Windows Live OneCare, which is supposed to manage my 'tune up' monthly including defragment my hard drive, saying that "Defrag has only partially completed due to high levels of fragmentation." My computer is really slow and so I try to do a full defrag - but the window Disk Defragmenter has just said that there "defragmentation, which can last a few minutes or a few hours. Is it possible to track its progress? It is the first version of windows I've used that did not have a kind of screen with boxes inside as well as the Defragmenter, indicating what has been done. For more than a few hours Defragmenter that happened and always says the same thing. I've done a few times, and I can't tell if it's just hang up or if it's even the defragmentation. usually after that about 8 to 12 hours, I start to swear, abandon and simply cancel it.
Please help - I'm about to hire a ninja out of my computer... Thank you!!!
Little.
I can't understand why people want an old defrag process. I want to use my computers, not watch the blocks move around the screen. With XP and earlier versions, defragmentation was not a dynamic process which took place without user intervention. You need to stop using the machine or program it so that it occurs in the middle of the night, because any interruption, even something as simple as a kick, screen saver required process to start over. Some machines would never get defragmented due to other processes constantly interfere.
Subsequently, the machine will start to become more and more fragmented, until the user remembers to start the process.
With Vista, it's a continuous process of low priority that does not interfere with your use of the machine. Simply, it is done without having to do a thing. And it is ongoing, the machine must never get heavily fragmented.
As I mentioned earlier, if you - or anyone - really wants to watch the blocks to move, there are a lot of software vendors that will allow you to give them your money if you can. Good luck, Rick Rogers, aka "Crazy" - Microsoft MVP http://mvp.support.microsoft.com Windows help - www.rickrogers.org

How to restore deleted Disk Defragmenter icon
I recently had my Disk Defragmenter icon left the tools for the Office System. I accidentally deleted the icon a few days later and I also ran a disk clean up. Now when I try to use Disk Defragmenter, windows says that the shortcut does not exist. Also, I tried to open (defrag.exe). However, once I open it, a pop window and it is black with words, and then it disappears. I want to use the Windows Disk Defragmenter, but without the icon how ever can I use again. Pls help me as soon as possible
Hi Clay9477,
'defrag.exe' you tried to open is the version 'command prompt' Defragmenter is why it suddenly appears, then disappears. To use this version, you will need to open it from the command prompt.
To open Disk Defragmenter, you're used to click the Start button and in the search box type: "dfrgui.exe" (without the quotes). This will launch the Disk Defragmenter. If you want to add the Disk Defragmenter icon to your desktop simply right-click on 'dfrgui.exe' and select 'copy' then paste it on your desktop. To add it to your Start menu, right click on ' dfrgui.exe and select "Show to the start menu."

Impossible to prevent (dfrgntfs.exe) Disk Defragmenter to run during System Idle
How can I prevent the Disk Defragmenter Windows (dfrgntfs.exe) tool to launch automatically when my Windows Vista machine is idle? I defragment my hard disk with IObit Smart Defrag software and do not want the Windows defrag utility constantly re-organization of the files on my hard drive once I optimized the placement of files with Smart Defrag.
I checked the Windows Disk Defragmenter tool (start |) All programs | Accessories | System Tools | Disk Defragmenter) and regular defrags are disabled (i.e., the checkbox "Run on a schedule" is disabled). I checked Windows Task Scheduler (start |) Administrative Tools | Task Scheduler | Task Scheduler Library | Microsoft | Windows | Defrag) and the task of ScheduledDefrag also appears as disabled here.
My hard drive is formatted with the NTFS file system and my Norton Internet Security 2010 software Norton tasks window shows that dfrgntfs.exe starts about 30 minutes after my system goes into "idle" mode. Is there another tool of Windows running in the background (for example, the Windows search indexing) which can be automatically trigger the Windows Disk Defragmenter?
I hope that there is a simple configuration change or registry change that will stop the Windows Disk Defragmenter to run while it is idle, but still lets me run a manual defragmentation if I want to do.

Thanks for the quick response. I'm failry certain that the ScheduledDefrag task in Windows Task Scheduler is not the culprit. This task (and trigger) show that off and the task history shows that a regular defrag last ran on my system there is, over 2 years which is the time that I have disabled the checkbox "Run on a schedule" in the Windows Disk Defragmenter tool.
I found a post today in the My Digital Life Forums (http://forums.mydigitallife.info/threads/1910-DfrgNtfs.exe-in-Vista-SP1) which suggests that there is a Vista boot optimization process that runs defragments dfrgntfs.exe whenever you reboot your system, even if in the application are disabled. Is recommended that a response to stop dfrgntfs.exe to run after every reboot:
1. open the Windows registry (run > regedit)
2. go to path
3. change the "Enable" key of Y to NI found information on the Start function to optimize on the Microsoft TechNet Library website (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc778290 (WS.10) .aspx) which States that "Windows automatically optimizes for the optimization of startup file location. This optimization happens automatically if the system is idle for 10 minutes. Start optimization improves the start-up time to locate the startup files in contiguous clusters on the volume, reducing the movement of the head of the disc during playback of the volume". I have no idea if third-party defragmenters like IObit Smart Defrag or Defraggler of Piriform can optimize the placement of these Windows startup system files or Boot Optimization provides some additional benefits to the performance of the system.
I don't know if the Boot Optimization function is actually the cause of my origins unscheduled defragments but it's the only reasonable explanation I could find. When these "silent" defragments happen on my system, they occupy more than 50% of my CPU and will last more than an hour (or until my system is idle). I had problems with my system of freezing after it goes into idle mode (i.e., move my mouse or using the keyboard has no effect and I have to do a re-difficult start by turning off my laptop) and I begin to suspect that if this unscheduled defragmentation runs along with other tasks in the background (for example (, my daily QuickScan in Norton anti-virus) that a page conflict or lack of system resources could freeze my computer.
I would appreciate hearing of a person who can confirm that the Boot Optimization function will trigger unforeseen defragments when Vista is idle or knows if the Boot Optimization function is all real benefits if you use a third-party Defragmenter.

What is the real Windows Vista defragmentation program, or a fake as described here? New tactic scam: fake disk defragmenters
If it is a fake, here are a few options to remove:
- Do a search on the web for the fake name of the programme, which should show several websites with removal instructions.
- Your computer has an antivirus program? If so, update and run it.
- Download and run a virus scanner. Examples: Windows Live OneCare Safety Scanner , Trend Micro Housecall , ESET Online Scanner .
- Download a removal tool virus free that you can burn to a CD and run. Examples: VIPRE rescue program ,Avira AntiVir Rescue System ,Kaspersky Rescue Disk 10 .
