Windows 7 search in files (like Windows XP)
Hello
Is there a way to "Find in files" using wildcards etc in Windows 7 in Windows XP? I do not want to index the file evey type & its content if I don't want to put any advanvced indexing options which seems to be the answer repeated on all the forums I visited. I read somewhere, you can type something like the example in Windows 7 search to achieve below
*.PDF content: text to find
but I can't get this to work. If I can't use the techniques above, anyone know of a good third-party search application that works?
Thank you
Paul.
See if this will help

How to search the file using the keyword under Windows 7?
I search the file with ABC as a keyword in the file name in the D: drive and would like to know how to search on Windows 7.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks in advance for your suggestions :>
Maybe all you want to do is to go in drive D itself (click here to open a window for her) and access the white search in the upper right of this window, where there is a small magnifying glass showing. To limit the search file name, you can enter:
name: abc
If you want to search independently incorporated between the other letters abc, enter:
name: ~ = abc

Windows 7 can search for files containing a specific string that includes punctuation
I have a documentation for a programming language which is in the form of html on my machine and search for files that contain the string "${1}".
However if I type that in the search box windows instead seeks any file containing the string '1' in its content or its file name or a folder (which gives me 10240 results!)
Research I try it is possible with a different syntax (escape the $ and brackets to indicate that they are part of the search maybe string)?
Thank you
MOG
Hi Mog,
Because the question you posted is related to search for files containing a specific string, it would be better suited in the MSDN forum. Please post your question in the following MSDN forum:

When searching for files in Windows Explorer (WIN 7), can the railways under folder reading "c:\help\me\please" instead of "Please (c:\help\me)?
Thank you!
What you can do is to do a search, right-click on any column heading (for example name, folder, etc.), and then click "Folder path" from the list that appears. You can also click to turn off the folder. The next time you're looking for in this area, this column of path of the folder should appear. You can drag the columns in a different order also.

Search for files based on the flow
Hi, I would like to be able to search for specific files mp3 and m4a files based on their bitrate, IE search for files with a bitrate to 128KBit.
I don't know, but is it possible under Windows Vista, or do I need another tool to do?
Thank you
Hello trotskyicepick,
Windows Search does not include a searchable property for the bitrate, but Windows Explorer can indicate the rate on view Mp3 files. For example, you can sort and filter the search results by bit rate and group your files in this way.
For example, if the files in question are in your folder of music and its subfolders, click music in the left pane of Windows Explorer. Now paste this query into the search engine:
ext:MP3
Now, right-click on a column heading in the right pane and add the property of spleen in the view. Click the bitrate column header to sort the display rate. Now click the drop down menu on the same header and choose "near CD quality' in the list. This filter the search results so that only files recorded to 128 or more appear.
Unfortunately, the Vista does not support the M4a format, so speeds of transmission of these files are not visible in Windows Explorer.

Search for files by name, date range, size, content, etc.
I just changed from windows XP pro to win 7 pro 64. For twenty years, I used the "Norton File Manager" who does not work under Windows 7 Pro 64 bit. I became dependent on its ability to search relatively sophisticated as by date range, size, content, name, etc. I guess that Windows 7 has something like this, but I'm not. Can you help me?

I recommend two different third-party search programs, both free:
1. search everything, which is faster if you search by file name
(http://www.voidtools.com/)2. agent Ransack, which is the best for finding content, etc.

Why can not only search for files that begin with a particular character or Word?
We have always been able to do in previous versions of Windows by typing: S *. *
In Windows 7 If this is something that has a ' anywhere in the file path or name.
As you have discovered, Windows indexes now better informed than before. So what was once a file name filter is now a search through file names, content and more - a bit like a search engine.
If a search for S. * may train with aSunday Slippery Slopes.docx or Fans.jpg C:\ path.Fortunately, you can precede your search term with the domain that you particularly interested. For example, try System.FileName: ~<> > or filename:F *. *

Hi Act3,
I suggest a look at the troubleshooting in this thread to see if it helps with your problem:You will most likely need to try to use the tool for indexing and search.I hope this helps. -
