Windows 8 disk space is Disappearing

Have a 120 GB SSD as my drive C and the free space on it a steadily declining since I installed Windows 8 on it.  It should be at least 60 GB free and is now only 1 GB free.  I did a disk cleanup and searched files.  I put the restoration of the system less than 5% and he says he's currently 4 GB, so where's my space, I want to come back!

Hello

Recently, I came across something that at least sometimes, indicates that this is related to the indexing of research essentially going nuts... The file out of control seems to be... C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Search\Data\Applications\Windows\Windows.edb...

This file is located in an area that is locked, unless you have changed the Ownership\Permissions of the files, but you should be able to access the DATA and to check its file size to see if it is the culprit...

If so, here are some links with more info...

http://superuser.com/questions/59864/stopping-Microsoft-Search-from-eating-my-hard-drive

http://windows7themes.NET/what-is-Windows-edb-can-i-delete-it-or-change-its-location.html

Old post but just saved my bacon.  Windows.edb was up to 34 GB on my device.  Initially to win 8, I have patched to 8.1 earlier but didn't was not aware of this problem until very recently.  HD is harnessed to free 788KO at some point...

Lesson learned: If you do not have ownership of a folder (you will automatically have access to when you try to open it), it will appear not as space of decision-making in the properties of the folder!

A day ago, I decided to free up space on the C: drive of my computer. By the time my drive was 10.4 GB of space. I deleted some old games and files, releasing much of the space and defragged my system gives me a total of 29.5 GB of space.

Shortly after, I was forced to do a restore of the system on my computer to correct an error. To recheck my space on the drive, he came to 10.4 GB. Deleted programs have not returned and after a thorough check of the system.  I tried several other forums as to find an explanation for the missing space, but most of the answers in the forums does not solve the problem at all.

  • The easy transfer tool Windows calculates disk space before starting to transfer?

Using the transfer windows easy between 2 pc both with vista. Calculate wet if there is enough space on 'new' drive until it begins the transfer?

    Thanks for the help.

    original title: disk space

    Hi Pitski,

Yes, Windows easy transfer evaluates disk space is needed to transfer your selections. If you use a USB flash drive, try to use one with enough storage space for the transfer of all. If your USB drive is not large enough to transfer everything at once, you can copy as many files that it will hold, transfer those files to the new computer, and then reconnect the drive to the old computer and repeat the process.

You can consult the section "what method should I use to transfer my files and settings?" section:

  • Availability of the Windows 7 disk space

I have a laptop with 111 GB hard drive, running Windows 7. Recently, I noticed that the free space left suddenly dropping to 10 GB and the performance was horrible. I tried everything I could to free disk space, but without result. Then yesterday the laptop crashed and now there is magically up to 58 GB free space. Does anyone have an explanation?

    Hello

Please click the start menu, type event viewer and press ENTER. Click the drop-down list icon left of views to custom, right-click Administrative events and select Save all events in custom as mode. Choose a file name for it, and save it to the desired location.

There may be also malicious software present on your system. It should run a scan with the following programs and delete anything that they detect.

  • Windows Vista disk space eat my available hard!

    Hello

I run Vista on VMWare Fusion on my Mac, but every time I use it I see my hs 'GB available' (displayed at the bottom of each Finder window) has increased of 1 and 2 GB.

I'm not instant and the size of the prompt in the folder Documents/Virtual MachinesWindows Vista.vmwarevm remains unchanged at about 28GB.

I use VMWare 2.0.5 and Snow Leopard.

    Can someone advise?

    Thank you!

Yes very easy.  Vista is started, it creates a swap file.  Given the unknown parameters in this equation, the memory is low, and so you need to swap the memory to disk.  More, you run the virtual machine, the pagefile over.

Stop Vista, but the VMDK increments until the full complement you configured, and eventually it will get to a point where it will not 'push' but I don't know how much space you started with, the amount of RAM that you gave the VM of Vista, and we do not know the State of the file between stops.

  • How long does take to Clean Up Virtual Machine and recover disk space?  Take a long time.

I just upgraded from Fusion 4 to 6.  Before converting my GB 131 VM version 6 I did a Clean Up because he says I have 9 GB of usable space.  I don't know how long it takes to run.  He has worked for more than 20 minutes, but there seems to be no way to determine if something is happening.  It simply shows a window 'Reclaiming Disk Space... "with no way to cancel out.  The size of the file and the date/time of the VM file does not change.  Activity monitor shows between 3% and 5% of the CPU with 13 to 15 of son used.

I saved the file to the virtual machine.

When you become concerned that nothing happens?  How to stop the process?

    Thank you.

Thanks WoodyZ.  No additional help is needed.  I now have the answer.  It took about an hour and a half to reclaim the space.  All right and that patience is a virtue.  (Windows 7-64) virtual machine starts very well.  I hope this helps other post to know that it can take some time.  It would be nice if there was a progress meter or something to indicate something constructive.

  • Windows Vista PC keeps filling the disk space

Windows Vista PC keeps filling the disk space, but programs like Treesize and Windows Explorer are not all of the additional files.

The disc has about 45 GB of files, but the 220 GB drive is almost full. I suspect that a program will create orphaned files. CHKDSK is currently suspended from the second pass. Will try to run until the end of the day to the next.

I turned on the hidden files and protected, it is not that I can't see the files. What can account for 150 + GB of invisible disk space?  Indexing of Windows seems to be active, although the C drive was marked to not be indexed.

I know that a temporary internet file (content.ie5) is doubly hidden. Who had only 50 MB in it, so it's not the culprit. Any other hidden super-fichiers that everyone knows.

Running Trend Micro PC-Cillin. The history of this creation of orphaned files?

All the tools that look right at the MFT to see what is using the disk space and the avoidance of the directory tree?

This isn't a matter of a few directories being wholesale, or clean old files. The space used is not anywhere to be found.

Already run cleaning ccleaner and disk. Empty temporary files, Recycle Bin, etc. Only restore point. Registry clean with ccleaner.

Never did anything on computer that could use 150 GB of space.

If you look at just the computer, you can see disappearing disk space (maybe 1 GB an hour).

Always seems to happen if you disconnect from the internet.

Friend PC, so I did not have immediate access to it.

Whence the free number 'space '? I'm just that an orphan file will not be displayed in a search in directories or with Treesize, but will use up to 'free space '?

    No sign of a virus.

    Hello

Were there any changes made on the computer before the show?

I suggest to refer to the article and try to defragment the hard disk:

Improve performance by defragmenting your hard drive

I understand that you have already scanned the hard drive with anti-virus software, although I suggest you try to run an online scan and check if it helps:

    http://www.Microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-us/default.aspx

Note: the Microsoft Safety Scanner expires 10 days after being downloaded. To restart a scan with the latest definitions of anti-malware, download and run the Microsoft Safety Scanner again. The data files that are infected must be cleaned only by removing the file completely, which means that there is a risk of data loss.

Let us know if it helps.

  • Someone at - he heard talking about Windows 7 clean install on new discs, taking 63 GB of disk space?

It must be something simple, once figure you it out!  Have had 2 calls assisted support 2 days for a few minutes each.  Guy does not seem to have a clue.

anyway... short as possible...  I built a new computer game. 3 hard drives SSD crucial m4, 1 x 128 GB, 2 x 256GB and 2 TB WD SATA III for storage.

You want to put Windows and Office, Antivirus etc. on the 128GB SSD... all games and programs on the two 256 GB SSD drives.  Requirements, I see it everywhere, including on the box... 20 GB for 64 - Bit.

I did a clean install Windows 7 home 3 times and then switch to Win7 Pro using a card key to upgrade time everything.  Fact a facility with everything configured as it was planned.  Made an installation with only the 128GB drive connected.  The two ways... Windows supports 63 GB of space when you go to 'My computer' and watch the free space.  STILL... If you go on the Windows disc and open and select all folders, files etc... including the hidden files/folders... you get a total of about 25 GB disk!  Exactly as you might expect.

Contacted Microsoft through chat... support person called... He repeated that everything I said I already tried and I even gave the data, figures and results, etc. no help.  Then he had me download an iso file and burn a bootable DVD with Windows 7 Pro on this subject.

Tried and same results.  SO now, I installed Windows 7 Pro 64 bit on 2 different Crucial Solid State Drives and a Western Digital 1 TB SATA drive.

Each installation takes 63 GB of disk space in 'My Computer'.

Each installation... When you navigate to the drive and open and select all the files and click right properties... get you about 25 GB of space occupied by the files.

Run a CHKDSK scan and it will show also the 63 GB or more space used.

Have already removed all the shadow copies, deleted all temporary files, ran CCleaner and got rid of everything. Delete the backups or restore points.  Makes no difference.

I have install Windows and in 'My Computer', it shows that 63 GB is used.  And it is above all of the windows updated hundred occur after installtion.  Nothing else was installed.

Any ideas?  I can put Windows on a 128 GB SSD, which only shows GB total 119 in 'My Computer' in the first instance.  After all the windows updates and virus and MS Office program, it would be complete and have no space to work.

The point is... Windows should only be taking up about 25 GB... May 30 when it is updated and corrected.

    Finally I thought of her.

When windows is installed into hibernation is enabled... No matter what you see in equipment/control panel and power sound/Options/change Plan / change advanced power settings.  Hibernation settings and parameters of sleep can show as disabled in the advanced but you will ALWAYS have a file called "Hiberfil" at the root of the C drive and it will be or has been on my system... 24 GB in size.

You will have to view all the files/folders to view this file.

24 GB windows put side also used space for modes of hibernation / sleep.  24GO of Wasted space!

I have also 32 GB of system memory.  When you install windows by default... it sets the page file/Virtual memory size in the same amount of memory you have installed.  In my case a little more than 32 GB was my page file size.

IF you have windows which takes about 12 GB installation, 1 without updates.

For more, 24GO Hibernation and 32 GB of page file.

So, when you look at 'My Computer' after a clean and no installation update again... Windows takes 12 + 24 + 32 GB = 69 GB... 69GB for a windows installation!  And the hard drive is only considered GB 119.  Once you do all the 'windows updates' installation will be more several GB.

So my 119GB SSD drive will be 75% or more complete just after installing windows.

SOLUTION: To get rid from where to disable Hibernation and recover 24 GB of disk space... go to start > programs > Accessories and right click on command prompt and select "run as Administrator".

This executes the function of the command mode prompt "high command prompt".

Your command prompt window should read as C:\Windows\System32 in mode "high".

If your window to prompt similar to C:\Users\Tony bed... then you are not in high mode.

Type the following in the command prompt window to disable the hibernation: powercfg-h off and press ENTER.

There is a space after the 'g' powercfg and also a space between the '-h' and the word 'off '.

The "Hiberfil" file in your root of C will have now disappeared and wah - Los Angeles... you 24GO more free space on your drive currently.

"#2 SOLUTION: right-click on"My computer"and select properties.  In the window that opens on the left column, click on "Advanced System Settings".  The window that opens will be the "Advanced" tab  Click settings in the performance section of this tab. In the window that opens this time again click the "Advanced" tab  Down under "Virtual memory" click on the "Edit" button to change your virtual memory settings.

In my case, I stopped windows manage the virtual memory and changed the setting from the window of 32 GB virtual memory size, because I have 32 GB of installed system memory... I reduced my virtual memory to 8 GB which is always a huge!

But in doing so, I got another 24 GB of disc space given my size virtual memory 8 GB value.

So now, once you do both of these actions, you can go into 'My computer' and you see that now only have on (my) 20 GB of space is used instead of the original GB 68 to 69 of the space used.

So now I have just to 98 GB of free space on a disk Go 119... with the installation of windows occupying about 20 to 25 GB of space that you want to see normally.

Before... I had about 45 GB of free space (after update).

Auto power OFF after put into hibernation and make sure that you do not have an ungodly amount of virtual memory reserved for the use of windows!

  • How can I get the amount of free disk space using the space using windows 7 Please share example using GetDiskSpace

How can I get the amount of disk space by using windows 7 Please share example using GetDiskSpace I already studied http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/allkb/9958B8E473C4EF1786256BBC0053B64F

Reading your question a little more in detail, I doubt if you are using the Win32 GetDiskFreeSpace API function (including my previous post is the solution) of the function GetDiskSpace from the Toolbox of the programmer.

With respect to the other, it works even with capacity greater than 2 GB disks, but you must use the appropriate formatting code to display the returned value. I updated my example to display the total of free space in the debug output window and added a comparison with the value of 3 GB using UInt64TypeCompareUInt box to tools programming interface.

The Windows.old subfolder contains all of the files from a previous installation of Windows. If you copied all your personal data of the user subfolder of windows.old. Then, it is safe to delete.
