External DVD USB drives are cheap. Usually $20 for a good quality player. Just buy one of these at Best Buy or another store and use it to install Snow Leopard. Then you also have a drive for something else that you have on the disk.

  • Can I install Windows 7 Professional on my Windows 7 Home Premium without formatting the hard drive?

I have a genuine copy of Windows 7 Professional, I would like to install on my laptop, but I'm afraid to do that because I don't want to format the hard drive and lose all my files, programs, etc. Is it possible to install it without formatting the hard drive and lose all my data? Thank you.

If the license for Windows 7 Professional, you have access to is a retail version update or complete, you can use the product key and the Express upgrade to Windows 7 Edition Home Premium to Windows 7 Professional. First of all, check that the edition of Windows 7, you are upgrading is already enabled (if it isn't, you will encounter complications and that you might start all by performing a clean installation). Click Start, type Anytime Upgrade, click on the option enter a key, enter the key of Windows 7 Professional on demand, click Next, wait while checking the key, accept the license agreement, click on upgrade, wait while the software upgrades, (it may take 10 minutes or more depending on the if updates are required) your computer restarts automatically, after the reboot, Windows 7 will notify you updating the computer, the computer will restart once more automatically and will be completed the upgrade, a window will appear notifying the upgrade was successful and your computer is ready to use, click Close, you should be upgraded to Windows 7 Professional your files, programs and settings retained.

Yes, you need to reinstall the SATA drivers or you will go to BIOS and set the SATA from AHCI mode to compatible.

But why you don t use the option of searching this forum?
There are a lot of discussions on this subject and it s not necessary to create 1000 threads on exactly the same topic. ;)

  • When you try to re - install Windows XP, it does not detect the hard drive.

Hi all. I tired to do a reinstall of Windows XP today. It seems to take a lot of time, and then I did a very stupid thing. I turned off the laptop that I had to go. Now when I try to start the laptop on the cd, I get as far the screen where I have to press on enter to install Windows XP pro on the system or press R to repair. The problem is that there is now no facilities to choose from in the box below and the system is not recognizing the hard drive. I can't even as much as the screen to format the drive. When I press ENTER to install windows xp, then I get a blue screen telling me that the system shuts down to protect my pc. Is anyone able to tell me what to do to solve this problem please. Thank you very much in advance for your help. Noel

original title: I did a stupid thing... Windows XP Pro

Sounds like a hard drive problem then. Your drive is maybe defective. First of all, you can use the partition of diagnostic Dell (F12) for its determination.

In case there is a SATA problem, press F2 to enter the BIOS and change the setting of hard disk SATA to legacy. (Might as well try this first.)

  • Envy 15-j059nr: Envy 15-j059nr would not start Windows after update to win10 now the hard drive is missing

This system worked before Windows 8.1 it has been upgraded to Windows 10 last year. It's my boyfriends computer and last night it kept getting blue screen dreaded with errors on his hard drive. He kept ignoring. Then, his computer's battery died and when he started upward, he could get a blue screen and act as if it would repair itself and would just start all over again. He was going in a loop. He did not know what he was doing, but searched on the Internet and ended up messing around any more.

Its installation was 850 GB HD 3 partitions, it was set up as a Raid was one the main C drive, one was the restore disc and the other hides. He changed the disk. He changed a few things in bios too, but I don't know exactly what.

The problelm I have right now, is that when that I boot without the USB bootable media, I created, I'm stuck at a screen that says there is no startup disk and no installed operating system and press F2 to run Diagnostics. When I run the diagnostics, just fine, no errors.

When I try to recover, repair, reimage or anything other that to reinstall, it goes back to the screen I mentioned above which does not allow me to do anything about this either, with the exception of past at the command prompt, which is X and not C. I did a dir/w and only seen the windows files are here , but under the users directory, documents and images are empty, so don't know if it's even watch what I think it is.

When I want to install Windows 10, everything goes smooth and then bam, he wants that pilots. I can't find the drivers for this laptop who don't have the .exe and require installation. This notebook is not a CD/DVD player on it. I don't mind doing a reformat and start all over, if I could recover his pictures on his hard drive. They are his grandfather.

    Help, please!

    Thank you in advance!

    AggieFan378

    You are the very welcome.

Unfortunately, I woudn't be able to help you with that.

I'm afraid that the PC is now a useless paperweight because of the BIOS update has failed.  There is usually no recourse other than to replace the motherboard.

If all goes well, you were able to recover the files before that happened, and if not, get a SATA cable adapter USB and read the hard drive on another PC.

  • How can I reinstall Windows 8 in my laptop if the hard drive broke down?

I have a new laptop with windows 8 is installed (product key is embedded in the bios I think and no sticker license more on this subject).

    I just want to know

    1. How can I reinstall Windows 8 if the hard drive broke down

and I don't have any medium of recovery and the warranty is expired

    2. is there any media can make me reinstall my windows 8?

for example using the windows disk 8 OEM that can be brought in computer stores

I know that windows 7 can.

    3. when I use other media to reinstall windows 8 in my laptop, it will ask for the product key during the installation begins.

I'm looking for the key to the installation?

I can in the future, faced with this situation. I hope someone can help me.

    Best regards

I think most of the technicians know how to use a recovery partition, but the real problem for the recovery of Windows 8, it is each brand (oem) will need an installation disc for their particular model. We can install a Dell windows 7 cd on any PC OEM and after doing the updates, it will itself attest. With windows 8 you can even not windows to be installed on the PC if the disk you put in does not support security in the BIOS.  In other words, you need the proper (HP, Dell, etc.) model numbers version of Windows 8 recovery CD similarly be able to install it.
If you are a system integrator or building a PC for yourself I think that the normal OEM cd should work as long as you you know number OEM KEY or product key. Its the BRAND PC which will be a pain in the buttocks in the future for technicians who have to reinstall Windows 8 on a VIRGIN hard drive AGAIN.

  • Windows 8 to load after replacing the hard drive

I had bought a web copy of Windows 8 download and installed correctly on my laptop. Later, the hard drive failed and was replaced by a new hard drive. • Windows Update does not work after the hard drive has been replaced

    Hello
I have the same problem, replaced in my Toshiba HD, rebuild from Sysimage, Windows Update does not work. A ran "fix the problem with the Microsoft Windows Update is not working.
    Problem still exist.
The message that I got while trying to update: "Windows Update cannot currently check updates,
because the service is not running. "You may need to restart you computer.
Stop and then restart the service, still no luck.

I ran Windows troubleshooting. He finds two problems with Windows Update components, it corrects.
    The problem still exists.

    The other post:

    Another interesting fact:
After the reconstruction the new disk, user account control does not recognize Windows programs.
for example: execution of Perfmon.exe, the Publisher is unknown! However, when I download the program Windows FixIt, Publisher is recognized as Microsoft Windows. It seems that user account control does not recognize the Windows programs that had found the new HD, but acknowledges those who is downloaded from the internet.
I guess there is a problem with the license, Windows was preinstalled on the Toshiba and replace the hard drive could have caused a few conflicts of licensing.

The same problem. Cloned old HD on a larger hard drive. Everything worked perfectly except NO indexing and update WITHOUT windows - the two recurring problems that seem to appear on the forums after a change of hard disk.

INDEXING resolved with change to "Intel rapid storage technology." Google what I put in quotes, choose the Download Center and get the specific to your OP and the controller software.

UPDATES have been a little more frustrating. The microsoft .fixes and convenience stores were without help.

Go to control panel / system and Maintenance / administration tools

    Select Services

Stop the Background Intelligent Transfer Service

    Stop Windows Update

In 'My Computer' go to Windows / Software Distribution

Right-click "DataStore" folder. Rename it to Datastore.old

    Rename the folder 'Download' Download.old

Return to Services and restart the Background Intelligent Transfer Service and Windows Update.

Look for the updates. It will take some time because you deleted the database.

    I hope this helps!

  • Reinstalling Windows 8 (or 10) after replacing the hard drive

I need to replace the hard drive on my Inspiron 13-5323.  It came with the factory "injected" Windows 8 on the motherboard. Subsequently, I've upgraded to 8.1 Windows, then Windows 10.  With no Windows disk and no product key, how can I reinstall Windows on the new drive?

    Illinichip

The product key is embedded in the UEFI BIOS, it will automatically be entered with Windows 8.1 (with update 2 media) or Windows 10 TH2 installation media. Follow the instructions here to download and create a Bootable USB (for UEFI BIOS):

  • Windows 7 and bios sees not the hard drive, but when I connect the hard drive to the USB with an adapter, I see directories and files

    Please, I need pc

Original title: windows 7 and bios does not see the hard drive. but when I connect the hard drive to the USB with an adapter, I see directories and files... Ive a hp Pavilion, what to do?

Check the BIOS for hard drive setting.

Make sure that you do not connect the drive to a SATA/RAID port.

Old IDE drives - check the jumper on the drive (use "Cable Select" as a starting point), the BIOS must also be set in legacy/compatibility/IDE mode. Note: If you currently use the AHCI mode, then switch to IDE mode may cause Windows to boot.

    2. I removed my HARD drive and connect it via an external USB box to my new Satellite.

    4. I click on the button "complete" and can not get information except ability and no volume (disk is NTFS).
    5. in disk management, I get the error "data error (cyclic redundancy check)". the disc is "not initialized".

NOTE: I've already put a password on the drive via the BIOS, I have of course I still not know that and I hope that it is to note the source of the problem...

Thanks if you can help me with this question.

    Hello

First of all: the HARD drive is not a problem if you can't turn on the laptop.

If the HARD drive is faulty, you may not be able to boot the system, BUT you would be able to turn on the laptop.
A home screen Toshiba usually appears at the beginning of the boot order.
    Do you see this screen?

If not, then your RAM modules are defective or there is a severe motherboard issue.
